The Polar World in Orsa has opened today. You can read more aobut it on their website: Polar World
A video in webb TV – Dalatidningarna
This is a translation of an article in Aftonbladet today:
Ewa has been waiting for Wilbjörn (Swedish for Wilbär) for two weeks but now her cavalier has arrived. They’ll have to wait a few weeks more until they can be together….
Soon Wilbär make Ewas heart melt …. They are not living together yet but there’s young love in the air in the Polar World….
A private snow gun. Excellent fishing. Eight footboll plans to stroll about. Ewa and Wilbär have found the love nest. Now their keepers are hoping there will be cubs in due course.
The global climate changes have caused serious troubles for polar bears. The polar ice is melting and the number of polar bears is diminishing dramatically. The Orsa Polar World is trying to change that.
We already mentionened the snow gun and the fishing but the huge enclosure offers as well lakes for swimming, caves and everything a couple of bears in love need.
The biggest enclosure in the world
Today Ewa and Wilbär will be moving to their new enclosure – the biggest in the world with it’s 40 000 kvm – about 8 footboll plans!
- If everythings goes well we hope to be able to have cubs earliest in the Spring 2011, Pernilla Thalin, the director of the bear park says..
Ewa and Wilbär will be separated – after a few weeks the wall between their enclosures will be torn down and they can live together.
- Polar bears can be very aggressive in the ‘wilderness’ and they need some time to get used to each other. That’s why we have to give them time. Otherwise there’s a risk Wilbär might injure Ewa – even kill her, Pernilla Thalin says.
A matchmaker
The bear park’s had some help from a professional to find the ‘right’ bears. A matchmaker from the Zoo Rotterdam has brought the polar bear couple together.
Ewa and Wilbär have been very curious about each other from the moment they ‘met’. The zoo hopes sincerely that love will grow….
- So far everything’s going very well. There’s a flirty atmosphere between Wilbär and Ewa – no doubt about that, Pernilla Thalin states.

Oh dear me….I am so excited and this could be the love story of the decade ( Knut’s romance will qualify as the love story of the century). I hope young Wilbar remembers all the polar bear manners and etiquette Corinna taught him and behaves like a young gentleman with the delicate debutante Ewa. No fighting, biting, kicking and cuffing which was his modus oprandi as a spoilt young punk at his old home.
I know everyone is talking about cubs (including me) but he is still a babe and needs time to play and grow up a bit – but it seems to be the ideal place for him.
Let us see what happens!! I love this one.
Thank you Mervi for this information and update about the young couple.
And Celinne, I agree, when they are expecting babies somewhere in 2011, that seems a bit to early in my eyes, because Wilbär will be only 4 years at that time. Well, most probably, we will not have to explain these two bears about the birds and the bees.
Hugs,
Patricia
Mervi ,thank you for the good news from the Orsa – Park.
I agree wtih Patricia and Celinne. It is much to early to talk about cubs. of course we all hope that Ewa and Willbär will be couple in a few years. But for me first i wish them a good time with growing up in such a paradise. The can nearly live like polar bears in the nature. Oh, they won the jackpot.

Hi Mervi, Thank you so much for keeping us posted on Wilbar. Did you notice in the Polarworld web page writeup that they say Wilbar and Ewa are the “first” polar bear couple at that park? Does this mean there could be another polar bear couple there too? If so, does Knuti still have a chance to go there??? I’m probably just engaging in wishful thinking…
Sarsam
Wow, the Orsa Park sounds like a paradise for polar bears, especially for a young couple and their future offspring.
but how wonderful!
I am just hoping that our Knuti will soon be matched with a young polar lady and will find a beautiful place to move to. Sarsam, I really hope that Knuti could move there too having so much space there, would be a great idea, and he could meet Wilbar- this would have been just fabulous.
And we could write so many stories on that subject. I mean for Mervi, in Sweden, Knut- that would be too much for her!

Oh! The love is in the air… Thank you Mervi, I believe this couple will have a great time together, much funny and player together. The Orsa is very nice place and it´s very great.
