Knut and Giovanna – the first kiss!

Heute früh war ich vor Bürobeginn im Zoo und kann das bestätigen was Doris von Monika erfahren hat. Giovanna lief lässig über die Anlage, während Knut sehr vorsichtig jeden Schritt überlegte, aber auch neugierig nach Giovanna schaute. Ab und zu schnaufte Knut laut durch die Nase und drehte sich Giovanna um, machte er mutig einen Satz in ihre Richtung und schnaufte dabei.
Gegen 10:15 Uhr dann der Moment in dem der *1. Kuss* stattfand. Beide Bären berührten sich mit der Nase. Knut konnte nicht mehr weiter ausweichen. Alles geschah allerdings in aller Ruhe.
Heute früh waren viele Fotografen und TV Teams vor Ort. Das Tor zur Höhle war zu. Das Ganze beobachtete Herr Henkel vom Bärenfelsen herab. Im Notfall hätte die Tür sofort wieder geöffnet werden können.
This morning I was in the zoo before working and can confirm what Doris heard from Monika. Giovanna casually walked through the enclosure. Knut walked very careful thought about each step, but also curiously looked to Giovanna.
At 10:15 Clock both Bear touched with the nose. The *first Kiss* between Knut and Giovanna. Everything was done without any agitations.

Neuigkeiten von Knut und Gianna heute morgen
Monika berichtet gerade, dass Knut und Gianna im Wasser sind, die Höhle ist zu.
Erst schwamm jeder auf seiner Seite und vor wenigen Minuten sind beide auf einander zu geschwommen und haben sich beschnüffelt.
Monika hat Gänsehaut, sie meint es sah aus als würden sie schmusen.
Ich habe auch Gänsehaut, denn ich bin noch zu Hause.

Jetzt am Nachmittag wurden beide Bären nur noch getrennt auf die Anlage gelassen. Vielleicht wollten sie auch nicht mehr zusammen raus, war ja auch ein aufregender Tag für beide Bären, besonders für Knut.
Zuerst war Gianna zu sehen, sie ist jetzt in ihrer Höhle.Knut ist seit ca. 15:30 h alleine auf der Anlage.

Kurz nach 13 Uhr erschienen beide Bären wieder auf der Anlage. Gianna sprang ins Wasser und schwamm einige Runden. Knut schaute ihr wieder zu. Dann kam Gianna aus dem Wasser, stellte sich auf die Hinterbeine, Knut rannte sofort in seine Höhle. Kam danach wieder sehr vorsichtig heraus. Gianna schwamm wieder im Wasser… die Szene wiederholte sich: Gianna stellte sich auf die Hinterbeine und Knut verschwand sofort in seine Höhle. Gianna ebenfalls… in ihre Höhle …
Knuts Blicke wirkten sehr fragend: Was macht denn dieses Wesen hier auf meiner Anlage ?
Beide Bären verhielten sich allerdings weiterhin friedlich.
Dank an Doris für die aktuellen Informationen aus dem Zoo. Leider ist der Nachmittag jetzt sehr verregnet.
Shortly after 13 clock both bears came out on the enclosure. Gianna jumped into the water and swam some laps. Knut watched her again. Then Gianna came out of the water, stood on his hind legs, Knut immediately ran into his cave. Then he came back out very carefully. Gianna swam in the water … The scene repeated: Gianna stood on his hind legs and Knut immediately disappeared into his cave. Gianna is also … into her cave.
Knuts eyes looked very quizzically: What about this bear being here on my enclosure ?
Thanks to Doris for the informations. It´s a very rainy afternoon now.

Und so lief es heute früh tatsächlich ab:
Knut und Gianna betraten beide die Anlage. Besucher waren noch nicht anwesend. Gianna schwamm dann im Wasser herum. Knut schaute ihr zu. Als Gianna aus dem Wassergraben herauskam, schnappte sie kurz nach Knut, der dadurch verstört in seine Höhle lief, Gianna ging ebenfalls in ihre Höhle. Alles verlief ruhig und ohne Aufregung.
Gianna kam kurz danach wieder heraus, schwamm noch einige Runden um dann wieder in die Höhle zu gehen.
Wegen Bauarbeiten sind beide Bären zur Zeit nicht auf der Anlage (die beiden Bären sollen durch den Lärm nicht nervös werden). Gegen 13 Uhr werden die Schieber wieder geöffnet.

Knut und Gianna waren heute früh erstmals zusammen auf der Anlage !!! Knut and Gianna were together for the first time this morning !!! Nähere Einzelheiten folgen. Beide Bären sind im Moment wieder in ihren Höhlen. More detailed news will follow. Both bears are return in their cages at the moment

Your Knuti is a big boy now

Dear Friends! As you have read in the newspapers and on the different blogs and forums I now have a girl friend! Yes, I have! Well, I haven’t been able to shake paws with her yet but she’s been in my enclosure. I can smell her….and let me tell you she smells good.
Not only does she smell good – she looks good, too. I’ve seen some photos and I’m mighty impressed. I might add I’m not looking too bad either….my cute ears, chocolate eyes and lakritznase should melt any heart!
White, fluffy and roundish – just the way I like the ladies, hihiii….I hope I can soon teach the Berlin dialect. In my opinion the only suitable language for a polar bear.
It looks like she’s flying when she dives into the moat….
…but I have an elegant diving style, too, don’t you agree?
Signorina Giovanna has been alone in my enclosure several days in raw last week. I really hope she hasn’t been messing around too much. Papa Lars warned me that the ladies love to clean and wash…..OK, a little cleaning won’t do any harm but there are limits for what a bear boy can take! I just have to make it clear for her but I have to choose the right words – I’ve heard she’s got a hot temperament.
When it was my turn to go out I did a thorough inspection. Everything seemed to be just like before. No fragile decorations anywhere that would only be on my way when I play. And how could I play if I had to be careful not to break anything all the time?
Hehe…Giovanna has green hair, too. after swimming in my moat.
She has lovely paws – hasn’t she? Maybe I should kiss her paw instead of shake it….oh, there are so many questions in my head….Daddy always told me I would do the right think when the time comes and I’m sure he was right.
I’m willing to share my toys with Giovanna but she mustn’t hide them …
Oh, here’s my red white ball!
I must get it in the right shape so I can throw it to my visitors. Maybe Giovanna likes to throw ball with me? She looks like a sporty kind of girl. Oh, we’re going to have bundles of fun!
While I’m ‘shapening’ my ball I’m doing some serious thinking, too. I’m really worried about the feedings. I mean, am I supposed to share my Wednesday salmon with Giovanna? You may have heard this before but it can’t be said often enough. A growing bear needs lots of calories ….but Giovanna is a growing bear as well. What to do? Do you think she prefers lettuce and other green stuff? Will you keep your claws crossed?

Ohhh, the suspense… Dear Knuti, It looks as though the powers that be are acclimating you both to each other’s scents, so that when you finally meet, there may exist, shall we say, an air of familiarity. Yes, my Boy, you are doing everything right, in thinking, in manners, in appearance, and that little matter of sharing salmons, well, that situation may be beefed, er salmoned up by a salmon toss to each of you. hihihi

Knut honey, I am glad you didn’t take Raspi’s advice and spray yourself with cheap 50 cents a bottle cologne to impress Gio. Your natural scent is divine and she must be quite impressed. Your are gorgeous and sweet and she must be thanking her lucky stars that you are the one. And tell Raspi lay off the cheap stuff himself okay. Poor Flocke is nauseated with his ‘Ralf Laran’ aftershave and doesn’t want any more “Rid Dar” from Lizzie Ardan.

you think she has a good smell, how wonderful. You have already seen her, unfortunately, only behind the grid.
Your first date with her is coming soon and I wish you both a very nice and playful time together.

Dear Knut,
Your Daddy told you right–when the time comes you will be ready and do the right thing. You have grown to be a very fine bear-boy. You are intelligent, kind, handsome, and have good manners. What more could a bear-lady ask for! Just remember to share your toys–remember, Gianna was not allowed to bring her own toys with her so she will need to play with yours. Don’t worry about the food, Auntie Sylvia and Uncles Ronnie and Marcus and all your friends will keep both you and Gianna well supplied. This is a very exciting time for you, dear. Remember that all your human friends are rooting for you and your new bear friend and are sending you and she all the positive vibes we can muster.

Oh, Knutie Pie, you really are a big boy now! I wish you and Giovanna many, many happy moments together! I must say it hurts a little to see how fast you have grown – sometimes it feels it was just yesterday you were playing with Daddy….
