Ganz kurz: es gibt eine ganze Menge Neues zu Mercedes in den K-Files, dank eines Pressefotografen, mit dem ich in Kontakt bin, auch eine ganze Reihe toller aktueller Fotos…Es lohnt sich, Mercedes geht es gut!!!!

das ist eine sehr interessante und informative Geschichte. Ich finde sehr schön, dass eine neue und große Anlage gebaut wurde. Hier können dann auch die andere Eisbären ein neues Zuhause finden.

Thank you all for the comments so far, I am sorry that the article was so badly edited by me but nowit seems a little more readable. Patricia, what a surprise that you actually visited once To-Nuik although it was very heart-breaking what you recalled. Do you happen to have old photos of your zoo visits?

Yes, working on Mercedes, I came across a lot of material aout yoos which didn’t met the standards at all. I will certainly write about that too one day. And I really appreciate that there has been quite a change during the past years. Even for Mercedes. When you see her on recent pics, she seems to enjoy life and I only hope that her relocation will do her good, that she arrives in good health and in the mood to discover a new enclosure on her old days.

Since I have been working on this article I have come to love that old lady and I am happy to see that there are so many around who care for her.

Dear Birgit,

I’m almost out of breath reading your very informative article about Mercedes – the Rose of Scotland! It’s good to know the beautiful lady is having a new home more suitable for a polar bear.

Unfortunately I have no possibility to visit her in Edinburgh but who knows – maybe one day I’ll visit her in her new surroundings!

Dear Birgit, I really appreciate this very complete report about Mercedes, husband and offspring. When I was reading your words with respect to her son To-Nuik, it makes me sad to say that I remember him in Zoo Antwerp. While I was there, he was banging his head against the gird (constantly !!!). And I also remember that at that moment I was thinking “they should better not keep polar bears because in Antwerp there is no appropriate space for them.
According to me, one of the very good things that resulted out of the birth of Knut is that now more people are aware of the awful circumstances in which polar bears were kept during the last decaded and that their living world is seriously endangered.
By the way, a belated Happy Birthday.
