Der König und sein Lieblingssohn

Er kam als Letzter zur Welt und war nur eine erbarmungswürdige Handvoll Hilflosigkeit. Im Kampf um die Leben spendende Milch der Mutter hatte er keine Chance. Die Geschwister rangelten und drängten den Kleinen gnadenlos beiseite, und bald wurde er so schwach, dass selbst die Mutter das Interesse an ihm verlor. Serengeti-Ranger David Mboto wies einige Safari-Touristen auf das Drama hin. Als sie ihn baten, den Kleinen zu retten, schüttelte er nur den Kopf: „So ist das Gesetz der Natur.”

Schon am nächsten Tag hatte die Szene sich verändert: Ganz in der Nähe der Mutter mit ihren Jungen lag jetzt der alte Löwe mit der imposanten Mähne im Schatten eines Affenbrotbaumes. Er schien zu rasten, aber der unruhig wippende Schwanz verriet seine gespannte Aufmerksamkeit. Die Löwenbabys balgten herum, aber als der Kleine die Situation nutzen wollte, um zu trinken, waren sie sofort zur Stelle und drängten ihn weg.

David Mboto traute seinen Augen nicht: Das mächtige Männchen erhob sich grollend, ging dazwischen und fegte die futterneidische Brut mit der Pranke beiseite. Er verletzte keines der Jungen, aber die Geste war klar: Ihr macht Platz hier für euren Bruder! Während der Kleine gierig sog, blieb der Alte da, und sein dumpfes Fauchen hielt die anderen auf Distanz. Ein Löwenvater, der sich um ein Junges echt zu sorgen scheint? Das haben die Serengeti-Ranger noch nie erlebt. Also sahen sie staunend zu, wie der Kleine wieder zu Kräften kam.

„Löwenmännchen sind zwar keine echte Gefahr für die Jungen”, sagte David Mboto, „aber man unterstellt ihnen immer, dass sie die Schwachen aus der eigenen Brut nicht überleben lassen. Das sei das Gesetz der Natur, behaupten wir Menschen. Aber was wissen wir schon über die Natur? Wir haben verlernt, sie wirklich zu verstehen. Sonst wüssten wir, dass nur ein einziges ihrer Gesetze uns alle überleben lässt: Das ist die Liebe!”

 Love is a natural law – The king and his favourite son

He was born last and was only a pitiable hand full of helplessness. In battle for the Mothers life spending milk he did not have a chance. The siblings pushed and edged the small one merciless away and soon he became so weak, that even the mother lost interest in him. Serengeti-ranger David Mboto pointed the drama out to the Safari-tourists. As they begged him to help the little one, he only shook his head:” that is the law of the nature.”

Already on the next day the scene looked different: near by the mother with the cubs was laying the old lion with his imposing mane in the shadow of a baobab. He seemed to rest, but the restless movements of his tail disclosed his intentness. The cubs romped about, but as the little one wanted to take the advantage of the situation to drink, they immediately were on the spot and edged him away.

David Mboto didn´t trust his eyes: the powerful male stood up, went in between and swept away with his paw the jealousy about food breed. He did not injure any of the cubs, but his gesture was clear: you make place for your brother! While the little one greedily sucked, the male lion stayed there and his low hissing kept the others on distance. A lion father who seriously seemed to care about his cub? Something like that the rangers never had experienced. So they watched with astonishment how the little one recuperated. ”

Male lions are not a real danger for the cubs”, David Mboto said, “but they are supposed that they won´t let the weak ones in the breed survive. This is a nature of law we peoples claim. But what do we really understand of the nature? We have unlearnt to really understand it. Otherwise we would know that only one single law let us all survive: That is love!”
