Hello friends!
We have now managed to get big, blue barrels – such as both Ewa and Wilbär had in their enclosures before. Oh boy, was that a great success! The bears don’t want to stop playing with them – from early in the morning until late in the evening. They have hardly time to take a break and eat – they keep on playing….
When Ewa came to Orsa she sometimes showed some stereotype behavior – so called Pacing – but I’m glad to inform you that we haven’t noticed that kind of behaviour for months. Both Ewa and Wilbär have adapted in their new home much better than we ever could expect.
Now we just hope it will be a nice winter weather on Ewa’s birthday. At the moment we have plus grades but hopefully it will be colder again.

November 26. 2009 the polar bear Ewa in Orsa Polar World celebrates her 4th birthday
Ewa was born 26.11.2005 in Ouwehand Zoo in Netherlands. She and her two brothers were raised by their mother Huggies. The father’s name is Victor. Ewa came to the Polar World in Orsa 5.5.2009. When the Polar World had the grand opening 18.5.2009 Ewa and Wilbär became world stars. TV, press and radio from all over the world have been reporting about them the whole summer.
At the age of 4 Ewa has gained the respectable weight of 230 kilos. Her favourite hobby is to play with her two years younger playmate Wilbär.
Ewa’s birthday will be celebrated by her fans in many polar bear blogs throughout the world and many guests from foreign countries have announced their interest. School children and children from kindergartens are waiting to participate in the celebration.
If you want to send birthday greetings to Ewa you can do it in Facebook.
How will the birthday child celebrate her special day? Well, she will have her favourite snack – bread with fish liver oil!! – and of course, a big salmon cake. There will be presents as well – many parcels with toys.
All the children visiting the park that day will get candy, soft drinks, cookies and balloons! The park will be open from 10 to 15 – the gate closes at 13.30. Why do we close so early? Remember - it gets dark very early in Orsa this time of the year.
The guest of honour is of course, Wilbär, Ewa’s best friend.

Dear Pernilla and Mervi — Wow, this is going to be a great party for Ewa! Thank you so much for the invitation and also the fabulous pictures. These are two very lucky bears to have such a wonderful home and a loving mother/keeper!! It is very interesting to see them playing so happily with the blue barrels in the midst of all the other “natural” toys they have. They have the best of both worlds…their zoo world and their more natural Orsa world.

thank you once again for newly-news! Oh yes, those big blue barrels…. *grin* They certainly are designed only for polar bear fun but humans abuse them for stowing something in them.
And thank you for mentioning Ewa’s little behavioral problem which luckily isn’t a problem anymore. I’m very glad about that.

Pernilla – What a simply wonderful idea to celebrate Ewa’s birthday! This will go a long way to raise awareness about the plight of polar bears and give the park some international news coverage. I am so happy to see the blue barrels and even happier to see Ewa looking more relaxed. While I adore the ‘emotionally’ healthy Wilbar, Ewa has always come across as being reserved and not entirely comfortable with her surroundings but now that has changed. She’s a lovely girl and I join everyone in planning for her birthday party.

You, me and a host of others are indebted that you are equipped with a new camera, probably on your wrist? much of the time, to catch those playful bears in some activity you know we all will want to see.
Bears in captivity have the time to play, and so the addition of the blue barrels is great news, especially the news that the barrels keep the bears occupied ALL day!
The plans for Ewa’s birthday are on my calendar and I will be tuning in for sure. I too am glad that Ewa has found herself at Orsa. It appears that both Ewa and Wilbaer are living in heaven on earth!

When I had a little bit more time, I went back to view the bildarkiv/ image bank of photos, which appear to show 2 very happy bears, many times perhaps even exhibiting a ‘smile.’ I particularly like the flying bear images which show a polar bear reflection below in the pristine waters at Orsa Bear Park. Also, the montage with Ewa relaxing in her sitting position make me think I might want to join her for tea, such an elegant polar bear lady is she becoming. It seems that polar bear ladies pride themselves in their appearances — Flocke, Giovanna, Vera, the zoo Berlin trio, etc. Who knows? Maybe for the same reason women pride themselves in their appearances
