Little Milla is hibernating – with objection!

The beargirl Milla is finally hibernating. The one year old Chocolate Eye Milla didn’t want to start hibernating at all. The orphan bear has no mother to teach her that she must close her eyes when the winter comes. However, Milla is now in her cave having a winter nap.

- Milla is used to retire to her cave to eat every day. I ‘chatted’ with her behind the bars and a keeper closed the door carefully. Milla was a little scared when the door was closed, the intendent Mari Heikkilä of the Ranua Wildlife Park tells.

- Milla has been hibernating about a week but she’s a very ligth sleeper. She wakes up often when she hears voices and sounds in the surroundings. During the first day the poor bear was heard crying in her cave but she hasn’t been banging the door in a ‘beary’ way so she has accustomed with the situation.

- When I go to observe her I see her lying very near the door and she seems to be thinking ‘why is that door closed, I want out’…..If she won’t be sleeping more deeply we will let her out again. We can’t force her to sleep.

The two other bears in Ranua started hibernating in the beginning of December. Usually they wake up in the middle of March – depending on the weather.

  4. Dear Mervi,
thank you so much for this lovely report and the picture of sweet little Milla. I can understand that she doesn’t understand why the door is closed and that she should hibernate.
I wish her all the best and good luck.
    Hugs, caren

  5. Dear Mervi, Little Milla makes me think of a young child who doesn’t want to go to bed because it wishes to watch TV. But they say that young bears and small children often react in the same manner.
    Big hugs,
