Oceans are made of small drops!

Today is my first monthly birthday in the year 2010 and I’m so glad I can take a nap lying in the snow. While I’m resting I’m doing a lot of thinking, too…..

We’ve had a real polar bear winter in Bärlin the last couple of weeks and our enclosure reminds the environment of our friends in the wilderness.

Yes, the snow has made me think a lot of my friends living under very poor circumstances….

Gianna and I live in a zoo but we are very happy.

We can play cheerfully together knowing that our keepers will come with food when we feel hungry.

We also know there are vets ready to help us whenever we feel sick.

Some people claim that a zoo isn’t a proper place for polar bears but we can’t complain. Where else could we live this comfortable life?

Thinking about my friends starving in the wilderness makes me sad. I’d like to help them but the only thing I can do is to hope the climate changes will stop and my friends can again have a decent life.

I owe my life to my beloved Daddy who didn’t save any efforts to help me to survive. Unfortunately there aren’t any Daddies for the polar bear cubs born outside the zoos.

I know I’m very privileged. I have a little but cosy enclosure, enough food, lots of visitors….. My birthdays are always a big event. Yes, I’m a bit spoiled……but it doesn’t mean I don’t feel deeply for my friends who aren’t as lucky as I am!

Dear friends, please, think about your environment. Even little things can make a big difference! As you know – the oceans are made of  small water drops! Let’s make the year 2010 a year of changes to the better!

Your pal Knuti

  5. Thank you for the lovely story.

I get so sad every evening walking home through the underpass under Hyde Park Corner – there are several homeless men with their pets and it is below freezing in London- they are always very courteous and say hello and their dogs are well kept.

Being in a Zoo isn’t so bad after all.

love Sarah and the Chelsea Gang xx

  7. Dear Knuti,
you are a very lovely bear with a lot of wisdom. You appreciate your keepers, your food, your enclosure and your ‘La Donna’. You feel yourself as being privileged. I do wish you all luck and happiness the world can offer to you.

  8. Dear Knut,

You show a lot of wisdom and compassion for such a young bear. It is a wise bear that knows when he and his friend have a good life. Happy first monthly birthday of 2010!

Dear Mervi — Excellent! The title/concept is perfect. Dear Leena P. — Thank you for the super photos!

  9. Dear Mervi & LeenaP,

  10. Dear Knut –

Even though you are able to eek out a life of leisure (ahem) in zoo Berlin, at least you are aware that many of your brethren do not have it so well. It is a story told time again ~ that of the the haves vs. the have nots. We must all look to our brethren to see that food, clothing and shelter are distributed to those in need. Sometimes, the story of the ‘have nots’ gets forgotten or brushed aside as those who have far too much on which to exist is extolled. We must be grateful for that which we have, and look to and take care of those who have not. There is far too much iniquity in those that have and those that have not.

    Prost,

    Tish

  11. Dear Mervi,

How thoughtful and appropriate of you, eh … Knuti to think of all polar bears in his first message this year. In Berlin, it is difficult to believe in the climate change in these cold, snowy winter days … But Knut, this unbelievable bear, never forgets what really matters. – Thank you, Mervi, once again, for interpreting the pictures and finding the right words and such a touching story.

  13. Very nice story! Knut is always so cute!

  14. Dear Mervi

I am sure, I read this charming contribution of Knut (with the “little” help of dear MERVI!) before, and again I found it so well written with all consciousness towards the topic but also charming as we know you in the role of Knuti. I could read it again and again, and also watch the accompaying pics endlessly. Thank you dear Mervi AND dear LeenaP!

Have a nice weekend. Hopefully we’ll see soon some sun-rays again. Even though I like snow, without dear sun everything looks a little sad at the moment.

    KnuGio-hugs for you
