Schmuzefantje in Hellabrun
As you all know thanks to our dearest Caren, Munich Zoo has recently presented a baby elephant to the public. As Caren already told us, its name is Jamuna Toni and she has played with her keeper in front of her audience. The Hellabrun Zoo has to wait 60 years for the birth of this cutie. At this moment, she weights already 112 Kg and is 88 cm tall. Her mother, Panang, who is 20 years, adores her little daughter since her two previous pregnancies have had a sad end. According to T. Guenther, Vice Director of the Zoo, there is a big chance that she can stay in Hellabrun because she is a girl. And here is a little video I found today in one of my newspapers (unfortunately it starts with some advertising), but Schmuzefantje is soooo cute.
Lolifantje in Antwerp
Kai-Mook and Auntie Yu Yu Yin are strolling around in the snowy elephant enclosure in Antwerp Zoo. Due to the extreme cold, the elephants are inside for most of the day. And as long as these freezing weather continues, they can only go outside for about 15 minutes. And although they clearly enjoy it, after 10 minutes, they walk back to the door to get inside in the warmth again. Even though they are very robust animals, their skin is very sensitive and the feet of Kai-Mook are still too soft to walk too ling in the cold. And also, some exercises are still required, because the “hills” in the enclosure are sometimes too icy and that baby elephant feet might slip. And by the way, every morning, she is taking a warm shower.

Dear Patricia,
Thank you so much for the ‘fantjereport’! The lovely photos and the cute video really warmed me up in the winter cold!
Hugs from Mervi
Dear Patricia,
thank you so much for your lovely article about the elephants. Your Schmuzefantje in Antwerpen is also too cute. Elephants in the snow are not so often to be seen. The grown ups were also outside on Sunday in Hellabrunn and they , too enjoyed it very much, however, only for a short time.
Isn’t it so lovely to observe how the babies try to get their trunk under control? The social life of an elephant herd is so astonishing and interesting. Whenever we thought to take a pic of Jamuna, the aunts came and stood in front of her, so nothing of the baby was seen anymore. I will follow her frequently in the next weeks.
Kai-Mok is quite big in comparison with Jamuna (of course).
I love to be kept informed by you about Kai-Mok.
Lots of hugs from caren
Oh, even one more charming little creature! Thank you Patricia for presenting also this elefantje to us.
BTW: the keeper one sees in the Video with Jamuna-Toni is the one who was in Tierpark Friedrichsfelde (east part of Berlin), and who moved approximately one year ago with his wife or girlfriend from there (she was the keepress of the camels etc. there) to Munich. He was/is asympatico one!
Hugs to you dear Patricia (and you are so right to being most upset because of the killing again of a young polar bear by Island police after he made the effort to swim 400 km – even as it’s not quite political correct
I can understand your expressed desire!
Dear Patricia
Thank you so much for the report of Kai – Mook. The video makes me smile. Like all little lolifantjes she seems to like playing football.

Dear Patricia – bernd installed the video player, which did not work before. That is so nice seeing Jamuna playing with the ball. In the elephant palace in Munich it is very difficult to see her because of crowds. The more we are grateful to see her in her brandnew film. Thank you so much.
Hugs from caren&bernd
Dear Patricia!
Thank you for the report and video.
Hugs
Patricia, thank you for this sweet and informative article about the new baby. I always love to hear how the zoos are being sensitive to the needs of the animals. My goodness, elephants are simply NOT built for snow…how funny that they seem to enjoy it anyway ;o)
Dear Patricia,
You must have read my mind–I have been thinking about asking you how little Kai-Mook was doing! Such a sweet elephant and protective auntie, Yu Yu Yin. Thank you very much for the update!! The video of Jamuna Toni is very enjoyable too–she is getting good exercise playing with the balls! In the Knuipe I asked whether this is the same Keeper that was in the Tierpark elephant enclosure–you said yes and that he was considered to be “rough” on the baby elephants…??? In the videos I saw he seemed to be getting along very well with them. I remember him mostly from the video in which he, along with other people, saved a baby elephant from drowning.
Thanks again,
Hugs from Sarsam
