Leoparden taugen nichts als Freund und das hat einen ganz einfachen Grund: Sie sind die gefährlichsten Raubkatzen der Welt. So zumindest lautet die Regel, doch von der hat Tippi noch nie etwas gehört: Sie ist fünf Jahre alt und ihr bester Freund heißt J&B. Er lebt auf einer Ranch in der Nähe von Windhoek und ist ein Leopard wie aus dem Bilderbuch. ‘Er würde mir nie etwas tun’, sagt Tippi und tatsächlich liefern sich die beiden Raufereien, ohne das die Krallen des Leoparden je das Kind berühren. Sie spielen Verstecken, laufen um die Wette und es ist eine wundersame Freundschaft, die das Kind und die Raubkatze verbindet – so ungewöhnlich, dass es scheint, als siege sie selbst über die tödlichen Instinkte des Räubers.

Bis zu jenem Tag, an dem Tippi mit ihren Eltern zum ersten Mal die Ranch verlässt, ohne vorher J&B zu einem Spaziergang auszuführen: ‘Plötzlich sah ich J&B – er war über den Zaun gesprungen, um uns zu begleiten’, sagt Alain Degré, Tippis Vater. Die Aufmerksamkeit des Leoparden aber – die gilt nur einer Kinderschar am Rande des Flusses. In Jagdhaltung schleicht er sich an – und reißt den kleinsten Jungen zu Boden.

‘Tippi saß im Auto und bekam von all dem nichts mit’, sagt Alain. ‘Ich befahl ihr, sich nicht zu rühren, dann rannte ich los, um den Jungen zu retten.’ Verletzt liegt das Kind unter dem Leoparden – und der setzt bereits an zu seinem letzten, todbringenden Biss. Mit allem Mut entreißt ihm Alain das Kind – und entfacht umso mehr die Wut der Raubkatze. Taxierend stehen sich die beiden ungleichen Partner gegenüber – dann geschieht, was niemals geschehen dürfte: Tippi tritt neben ihren Vater und dann, vollkommen unbeirrt, auf J&B zu. Die Muskeln der Katze spannen sich, in ihren Augen liegen weder Erkennen noch Freundschaft.

Und in diesem Moment, während Alain hilflos all das registriert, haut Tippi dem Leoparden mit aller Kraft auf den Kopf und sagt drei Worte: ‘Stop it, J&B.’ Die Welt steht still, einen winzigen Augenblick. Dann ist der Bann gebrochen: Artig setzt sich die Katze neben Tippi, schmiegt sich an sie … Der Junge überlebt den Angriff des Leoparden. Tippi aber spricht nie wieder davon. Sie sagt nur: ‘Ich hätte nicht ohne J&B gehen dürfen. Er ist mein bester Freund. Und seinen besten Freund lässt man niemals allein …’

Leopards are not good as a friend and there is a simple reason for it: they are the most dangerous feline predators in the world. This at least is the rule, but about this Tippi never had heard: she is five years old and her best friends name is J&B. He is living on a ranch near Windhoek and he is a leopard like from the storybook. ‘He never would harm me’ Tippi said and in fact they tussle with each other, without the claws of the leopards ever touching the child. They play hide and seek, race against each other and it is a wondrous friendship which joins the child and the big cat – so unusual that it seems that she prevails the deadly instincts of the predator.
 
Until the very day on which she is leaving the ranch the first time with her parents without going first for a walk with J&B: ‘Suddenly I saw J&B – he had jumped over the fence to accompany us’, said Alain Degré, Tippi’s father. But the attention of the leopard is only fixed on a group of children at the river-bank. In hunting manor he crept up on them – and dragged the smallest boy to the ground. Tippi was sitting in the car and did not realize anything about’. ‘I told her not to move, than I run to save the boy.’ Injured the child is lying under the leopard, who now was ready for the last deadly bite. With all his courage Alain wrenched the child from the leopard – and makes the big cat even angrier by that. Assessing each other this two uneven partner are standing opposite each other – then happens what never should have happened:

Tippi steps beside her father and then completely undeterred to J&B, The muscles of the big cat tighten, in his eyes neither recognition nor friendship are to be recognized. And in this very moment, while Alan helplessly registers all that, Tippi hits the head of the leopard with all her power and says three words:’Stop is, J&B.’ The world stood still for a tiny moment. Then the ban was lifted: bravely the big cat was sitting beside Tippi clinging to her … the small boy survived the attack of the leopard. Only Tippi never again talked about that happening. She only said:’I never should have gone without J&B. He is my very best friend. And the best friend never should be left alone …’
