A small twig – a great joy

Bei mein letzte Besuch an Knut in März hat unserem Bärchen Werbung gemacht für sein schon berühmten Stöcklein-Spiel. “Vergnüglich, gesund, mit wenig Aufwand und ohne Kosten zu betreiben, förderlich für Gemeinschaft und Freundschaft”, so nickte er mich zu. Erstaunt hörte ich zu. Werbung? Knut? Ein Eisbär der sich im Marketingbereich begebt!? Aber von Knut kann mann naturlich alles erwarten.

During my last visit to Knut in March, our little polar bear promoted his already famous twig- play. “Fun, healthy, to enjoy without expensive gear or other costs, good for community and good for friendship”, he indicated to me. I listened to him in amazement. Knut, plugging his game? Was that óur polar bear, trying to enter the realm of marketing!? But of course, we know we can expext almost anything from Knut.

“Du kannst dich ganz zwanglos, je nach Zeit, Lust und Wetterlaune zu diesem Spiel triffen, alleine oder mit mehrere Personen, was du wollst”, erzählte Knut weiter. Es war Deutlich, er war selbst begeistert von sein selbst-erfundenes Spiel. Und er wollte nur, uns auch mit das phantastischen Spiel bekannt zu machen.

“You can play the game, alone or with others, completely at your leasure, whim, just what you want”, Knut explained further. It was clear, Knut was enthousiastic about his own self-made game. And he only wanted to get us to know this phantastic game as well.

Ich war überrascht das Knut mit mir so eine Konversation führte, ohne Worte, aber wir verstanden einander, fast. “Ein Spiel mit Stöcklein? Meinst du Stöcklein holen?” fragte ich – ich kann oft ein bisschen schwer von Begriff sein. “Nein, nein, schuttelte der Bär sein Haupt. “Sehe ich auch wie ein Hund? Das macht man doch nicht mit ein Eisbär? Und wie denkst du dann das ich das Stöcklein bei dir bringen soll!?”

I was suprised that Knut engaged in such a conversation with me – without words, but we understood each other, almost, well. “A game with a twig? Do you mean: fetching a stick?”" I asked – I can be a little bit slow with understanding. “No, no, the bear shaked his head. “Do I look like a dog? You don’t play such a game with a polar bear, don’t you? How do you think I schould return such a stick to you!?”

Ja, daran hat ich nicht gedacht. “Jetzt habe ich ein Moment ruhe”, sagte der Eisbär. “Mein bessere Hälfte ist irgendwo anders beschäftigt. Komm, ich zeig dir was ich meine – nehm doch bitte einige Fotos davon, das du es weiter erzählen kann! Wirkt auch inspirierend für mir, so eine Kamera”. Und genau das habe ich getan. Das Ergebnis können Sie hier sehen.

Well, yes, I hadn’t thought of that. “I’ll tell you what”, said the bear. “At the moment, I have some time for you. My better half is occupied somewhere else. Come, I’ll show you what I mean – and please, take some pictures, so that you can show the others! Also inspiring to me myself, such a camera, I may add”. And that’s just what I have done; the results of which can be seen below.

Nachdenken und mit Stöcklein googeln macht mächtig Schläfrig.

Thinking and playing can make one real sleepy.

Und vor ich es mich gut bewusst war, schlief der Bär zufrieden ein. Schade, ich hat mich gefreut auf ein weiteres Gesprach. Aber seine Demonstration von das Spiel machte sein Botschaft klar genug: “Wenn nicht Spiel und Scherz ein natürliches Vergnügen enthielten, würde nicht eine so heftige Begierde der Menschen nach ihnen suchen. Darum kommen sie doch alle am Gehege!” Also lernte mir Knut – frei nach Seneca – wie viel Spass ein kleines, einfaches Spiel uns bringt.

And before I knew what happened, the bear, content with his game, fell asleep. A pity, while I would have enjoyed a further conversation. But his demonstration of the game carried his message over clear enough: “If playing and joking were not a natural joy to man, not half as many people would go after playing and joking. That’s why they all are coming to my resort!” And thus Knut learned me – a free interpretation of Seneca – how much joy a simple game can bring us.
