San Diego Zoo – Part 1

Wir kamen in Zoo früh am Morgen. Das erste was wir sahen war, dass das Gehege für die Eisbären wird erst am 26th März eröffnet. Das war sehr schade, aber nicht zu ändern. Der Zoo ist riesig, die Gehege sind groß und die Vegetation wunderschön.
Als Erstes wir sahen die Flamingos. Die Farben sind einfach toll.
We came to zoo early in the morning. The first what we saw was that the enclosure for the polar bears is opened fist in 26th March. This was a great pity, but not to be changed. The zoo is gigantic, the enclosures are big and the vegetation is wonderful.
First of all we saw the flamingos. The colors are simply great.

There are the youth flamingos.
An manchen Gehegen waren angegeben die Zeiten für das Gespräch mit dem Tierpfleger. Wir kamen rechtzeitig zum Gespräch bei den Tigern. Der Tierpfleger hatte die Fleischbälle mitgebracht und erzählte, dass die Fleischbälle sind nur ein Snack für die Tiger. Sie bekommen ungefähr 2,5kg Fleisch am Tag. Gefüttert werden sie am Abend, wenn die Besucher den Zoo verlassen haben.
Die Tiger bekommen keine lebende Tiere, aber die nicht zerlegte Teile oder den ganzen Kaninchen. Der Pfleger meinte, es sieht nicht angenehm aus, wie die Tiger essen und mit dem Essen spielen. Wir sahen 2 junge Tigermädchen, sie sind 2 Jahre alt. Die Eltern und der Bruder leben im internen Teil von Zoo. Der Pfleger erzählte, dass die Tiere bekommen Spielzeug. Der Zoo legt großen Wert auf die Beschäftigungsprogramme für die Tiere. Ein Mädchen fragte, was für eine Ausbildung braucht man um der Tierpfleger zu werden. Der Pfleger antwortete, dass es ist erforderlich erst ein Bachelor Abschluss und dann ein Meister Abschluss in Biologie oder Psychologie. Er meinte, dass mehrere Psychologen landen in Zoo und beschäftigten sich mit der Tier Psychologie.
On some enclosures were given the times for the conversation with the keeper. We came on time to the conversation about the tigers. The keeper brought the meat balls and told that the meat balls are only a snack for the tigers. They get about 2.5 kg of meat on the day. They are fed in the evening if the visitors left the zoo.
The tigers get no living animals, but the not disassembled parts of the animals or the whole rabbits. The keeper meant, it looks not pleasant as the tigers eat and play with food. We saw 2 young tiger’s girls, they are 2 years old. The parents and the brother live in the internal part on zoo. The keeper told that the animals get toys. The zoo set a high value of the occupation schemes for the animals. A girl asked what education needs to become the keeper. The keeper answered that it is necessarily first a Bachelor and then Master in biology or psychology. He believed that several psychologists land in zoo and dealt with the animal psychology.

What amazingly beautiful photos! I like the idea of taking photos of the information signs, too. I fell in love with the gorgeous tiger and the little panda is, of course, cuter than cute!

Fantastic!! I finally have the opportunity to walk through the San Diego Zoo! That is the one zoo I have always wanted to visit and now I can, thanks to you!! Wow, you need a masters degree to get a job as a keeper there? Obviously education/training is desirable, but I’m not sure I agree that an advanced degree is necessary for all the keepers. I don’t think Thomas had an advanced degree but he was obviously educated enough and had a lot of common sense and observational skills and could effectively translate those observations to positive actions for his animals. Anyway, the animals look beautiful and well cared for! Thank you for a great report with beautiful photos. I’m already looking forward to the next installment!!

Danke for a most refreshing, informative and beautifully photographed visit to our San Diego Zoo. I myself have that visit on my list of things to do, when I happened upon your detailed account. Thank you indeed. Years ago, was in the area of what I think I recall was the Wild Animal Park, but again, time got away from us, and as I recall we barely had 1 hour before closing. A pity, because that Park is also on my list of return visits.
It is so great to hear from you folks from abroad coming here and reporting back to us U.S. citizens what we have available to us for viewing. Again, danke danke, much appreciated!

das ist so gemein eure Fotos von San Diego zu sehen, da wollten Simone und ich im April hin. Leider mussten wir die Amerika-Reise absagen, weil meine Gesundheit mir einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht. So können wir wenigsten eure Fotos bewundern. Toll das dort Zeiten gibt mit den Pflegern zu reden.
