There’s nothing like a good winter’s sleep!

The old gentlebear Palle-Jooseppi in Ranua has enjoyed a good winter’s sleep. However, yesterday was time for him to come out from his cave and scent the spring winds.

The 23 years old honey paw woke up on Saturday and started ‘making a mess’ in his cave in such a way that the intendent Mari Heikkilä decided to let him out.

- We had to let Palle-Jooseppi out because he was disturbing his neighbours – mama Doris and her cubs, Mari Heikkilä says.

- We don’t know yet how many cubs Doris has in her cave. She and her cubs will be coming out in about a month – it’s still too cold for the little ones.

Soon Palle will have company. Maybe you remember the 1 year old female bear Milla? She hasn’t been hibernating properly but only spent her time in peace and quiet eating and sleeping every now and then. She’s coming out next week.

Palle has been treated with oranges, apples and bread for starters. In  a few days the keepers will start feeding him with meat and fish.

Knuti’s Weekly wishes Palle, Milla, Doris and her cubs a wonderful springtime!

  2. Dear Mervi,
Thanks for this news! A whole other bear family to follow! I can’t keep up with all the animals we know now! xo k-j

  3. Dear Friends –

As K-J so accurately reported, our bear ‘family’ keeps increasing in size, yet in our bear-hearts, there will never be ‘no-room’ for another bear-tale.

We are all so pleased to know the certain whereabout of bears, be they polar bears, black bears, brown bears, even other zoo/other creatures.

Of course, a warm welcome to Palle-Jooseppi, Mama Doris and her cubs, according to keeper Mari Heikkilä. After a long, cold winter, who would not want to come out and do the “spring experience,” regardless of borders, cages, caves, or enclosures. A bear needs to have that commune with fresh air. Also, we shall be anticipating news of Mama Doris’ cubs, as cubs are the delight of our very existence!

And this is a welcome site to come to to ‘de-tox’ from the world as we know it or experience it. Kudos and many thanks, Mervi, for hosting.

    Bear Hugs Always,

    Tish

  4. What an impressive huge TeddyBear “Palle-Jooseppi” is! And what a funny name he has! You expect him to start a “Schuhplattler” immediately ;-)
