Lars – Visit in Wuppertal

At nine o´clock in the morning Gitta and I entered the zoo and went straight into direction leading to Lars who lives at the mother child enclosure. In front of the seals pool we met the keeper and stopped for a little chat. He told us that Lars is outside, and that he is in a good mood. Then Mr. Kühn invited us to meet him after the seals feeding, than he would have a lot of time for us, and we could ask him everything we wanted. So, for us – it was Lars time. The enclosure is locked off with barriers, so we could see Lars only in a distance of round 15m. He was walking through the enclosure, his eyes wide open, he noticed everything in his surroundings. His fur looks very good, white and clean.
Um 9 Uhr morgens betraten Gitta und ich den Zoo, und wir gingen direkt in Richtung Lars, der jetzt im Mutter-Kind-Gehege lebt. Bei den Seelöwen trafen wir den Pfleger, und wir unterhielten uns kurz mit ihm. Er sagte uns, dass Lars draußen war und dass es ihm gut geht. Dann lud uns Herr Kühn ein, ihn nach der Seelöwenfütterung zu treffen, dann würde er Zeit haben, um uns alle Fragen zu beantworten. Jetzt war für uns – Zeit für Lars. Wir konnten Lars nur aus einer Entfernung von ca. 15m sehen. Er spazierte durch das Gehege mit weit geöffneten Augen und nahm alles aus seiner Umgebung wahr. Sein Fell sieht sehr gut aus, weiß und sauber.
He noticed very well that there were two visitors watching him, and so he was looking to Gitta and me all the time while he was walking short distances. After a while Lars went into the water and started to play with a big ball.
He enjoyed it very much and had a lot of fun in the water. Time for us to go back to the entrance where we met Ludmila,
ConnyHH, GiselaH, and Andrea HB. We went to the feeding of the seals, always very nice to see what a lot of
fun it is for the seals, Mr. Kühn and the audience.
Er bemerkte, dass zwei Besucher ihn beobachteten, deshalb schaute er die ganze Zeit zu Gitta und mir während er seine kurzen Strecken lief. Nach einer Weile ging Lars ins Wasser und begann mit dem großen Ball zu spielen. Er hatte viel Spaß im Wasser. Zeit für uns zum Eingang zurück zu gehen, um Ludmila, ConnyHH, GiselaH und AndreaHB zu treffen. Wir gingen zur Seelöwenfütterung, es ist immer schön anzusehen, welchen Spaß die Seelöwen, Herr Kühn und die Besucher dabei haben.
And then we had our chance to talk with Mr. Kühn. Here is the summary of our discussion:
Lars is more or less healthy now, is eating normal and also a lot. He lost round 50 kilos, but is in a good way to gain wheight again. He does not get only the normal food but also a lot of minerals and vitamins.
Until today the reason for that tragedy is unknown. It is definitley not the water; the water was checked by a lab for a lot of money. It was definitley no plant, all they know is , it was a kind of virus. And that can be transferred by the excrements of bird or rats.
Und nun hatten wir die Möglichkeit mit Herrn Kühn zu sprechen. Hier ist eine Zusammenfassung unseres Gesprächs: Lars ist mehr oder weniger gesund jetzt, er frisst normal und auch eine ganze Menge. Er hat ca. 50kg abgenommen, aber er ist auf gutem Wege, wieder an Gewicht zuzulegen. Er bekommt nicht nur normales Fressen, sondern auch Mineralien und Vitamine.
Bis heute ist die Ursache für die Tragödie unbekannt. Es ist sicher nicht das Wasser; das Wasser wurde durch ein Labor untersucht. Auch waren es keine Pflanzen, was man bis jetzt weiß, ist, dass es eine Art Virus war. Und der kann durch den Kot von Vögeln oder Ratten übertragen werden.
Lars has to live at the enclosure until they have a valid result. And it is also a very good place to watch him. If he gets problems again they can help him in that small enclosure. It is impossible to do so in the big enclosure but until today he is very fine.
One of the reasons that his fur looked so bad in the past; he had mites and also changed the fur. Now he has a healthy summer fur. And now Mr. Kühn made a really great suggestion. He invited us to come into the internal range to watch Lars at the big window. Believe me, this was a very emotional moment, standing so close to him, and watching him while he got a lot of fish from Mr. Kühn. Lars enjoyed them very much, and I had tears in my eyes when I saw him eating the fish from his paws.
Lars muss in dem Gehege bleiben, bis genaue Untersuchungsergebnisse vorliegen. Auch kann man ihn hier sehr gut beobachten. Sollte er wieder Probleme bekommen, kann man ihm hier gleich helfen, das ist im großen Gehege so nicht möglich. Aber bis jetzt geht es ihm gut.
Ein Grund dafür, dass sein Fell in der Vergangenheit nicht gut aussah, ist, dass er Milben und sein Fell gewechselt hatte. Und jetzt machte Herr Kühn uns einen großartigen Vorschlag. Er lud uns ein, in den Innenteil zu kommen, um Lars an der großen Scheibe zu sehen. Glaubt mir, das war ein sehr emotionaler Moment, ihm so nahe zu sein und dabei beobachten zu können, wie er von Herrn Kühn mit einer Menge Fische gefüttert wurde. Lars genoss das sehr. Ich hatte Tränen in den Augen als ich sah, wie er die Fische von seinen Tatzen fraß.

The keepers installed a shower in the enclosure, so that Lars can refresh if it is too hot. He can also go into his cave whenever he wants.
Die Pfleger haben eine Dusche im Gehege installiert, so dass er sich abkühlen kann, falls es ihm zu heiß wird. Er kann auch in seinen Stall gehen, wenn er möchte.

Meanwhile a young woman arrived and Mr. Kühn introduced her as the person who takes care of Lars, and that it was her who brought Lars back into such a good condition. We thanked her a lot and gave a little donation for the animals of the polar world, but Mr Kühn decided to use the money only for Lars. I think he will get the biggest salmon one can buy in Wuppertal.
Now it was time for visiting the rest of the zoo, including lunch and coffee break. Our last way in the late afternoon was, of course, to say Good Bye to Lars.
Zwischenzeitlich war eine junge Frau gekommen, die uns Herr Kühn als diejenige vorstellte, die Lars wieder in diesen guten Zustand gebracht hatte. Wir dankten ihr und spendeten einen kleinen Betrag für die Tiere der Polar World, aber Herr Kühn entschied, dieses Geld nur für Lars zu verwenden. Ich glaube, er wird den größten Lachs bekommen, den man in Wuppertal kaufen kann.
Nun wurde es Zeit, auch die anderen Tiere im Zoo zu besuchen, und für eine Mittagspause mit Kaffee. Unser letzter Besuch am späten Nachmittag war natürlich bei Lars, um ihm Auf Wiedersehen zu sagen.
He was just preparing for a little nap, and we could see, how he was searching for the right position, head in the shadow, and back in the sun.
Er war gerade dabei, sich auf ein Nickerchen vorzubereiten, und wir sahen, wie er eine bequeme Lage suchte, Kopf im Schatten, Hinterteil in der Sonne.
While we are standing at the barrier, the young woman came out of the house and for the second time we were invited to come to the window.
Summary: Lars is not that strong polar bear we know from the past, he lost a lot of weight, and he is still a bit weak. He has two wonderful keepers, who love him very much and do everything to make life comfortable for him.
I do not know if we ever will know what really happened, but it is for sure that the zoo is interested in informing the visitors in a positive way, and that is OK. They had some problems with the so called experts during the last weeks, and for me, the zoo decided to give some informations, if the audience is serious and friendly.
Während wir am Zaun standen, kam die junge Frau wieder aus dem Gebäude und ein zweites Mal wurden wir eingeladen, zu der Scheibe zu kommen.
Zusammenfassung: Lars ist nicht der starke Bär, wie wir ihn aus der Vergangenheit kennen, er hat stark abgenommen, und er ist immer noch ein wenig schwach. Er hat zwei wunderbare Pfleger, die ihn sehr lieben und die alles tun, um ihm das Leben angenehm zu machen.
Ich weiß nicht, ob wir jemals erfahren werden, was wirklich passiert ist, aber es ist sicher, dass der Zoo daran interessiert ist, die Besucher in positiver Weise zu informieren, und das ist okay so. Sie hatten in den letzten Wochen Probleme mit den sogenannten Experten, und meiner Meinung nach hat der Zoo entschieden, zu informieren, wenn die Besucher seriös und freundlich sind.

Dear Bea and Ludmila, many thanks for the report and the pics. And yes, even though he is not yet the strong and gorgeous polar bear, now we know that soon, he will gain his “looks” again. It must have been a nigthmare for his keepers and Zoo Wuppertal and I still regret that Jerka did not make it. It is also very wise of his keepers to have Lars in the mother-child enclosure for the moment, although it is a small place. In case of emergency, they are able to take immediate action. And just like so many people, I truly hope that soon, the reasons that caused this tragedy will be discovered, and this more particularly for Lars, the Zoo and his keepers.

Thank you so much for this very informative report. What a relief to know Lars is getting better. His fur looks already very good and after gaining some weight he’ll look just like before.
How kind of the keepers to let you in to the ‘back stage” to have a closer look at Lars. The zoo Wuppertal does a great job informing the visitors. I can fully understand they can do without help from all the self-made experts – I’m convinced they know what they’re doing and they’re doing it well!
i know I’m a sentimental old fool but I can’t help believing that Lars senses the love and caring thoughts from the visitors. That’s why I’m so glad to hear there were so many of his friends visiting him.

ganz lieben Dank für die Berichterstattung aus Wuppertal, man kann also Hoffnung schöpfen das es Lars hoffentlich bald besser gehen wird. ich sende euch ein von Herzen kommendes Dankeschön für diese informative Reportage mit den schönen Bildern von Lars. Auch geht meine Dank an alle Pfleger und Docs in Wuppertal, besonders an die junge Dame, die sich speziell um Lars gekümmert hat. Ja, man kann sehen, dass Lars auf einem guten Weg ist und es ist sehr SEHR beruhigend zu wissen, dass er in besten Händen ist.
Und wer diese gewisse Zoo-Experten sind kann ich mir nur allzugut denken; das werden die Leute sein, die es in jedem Zoo gibt, und die den Pflegern sagen, wie sie ihre Arbeit machen sollen.
Weiter so, Papa Lars! Damit wir bald wieder sehen können, wenn Du dich majestätisch zu Deinen 3 Metern Lebensgröße entfaltest!

Even as I look at Lars I feel deep concern and despair but I am so relieved that he has such caring and humane keepers like Mr Kuhn and that young lady. I give thanks in my heart for their efforts. We must continue to pray for our Lars and send positive healing energy to him.
Dear Bea and Ludmila, thank you SO much for reporting this story in such a gentle and fair way. Your love and concern for Lars is very clear and I find that soothing. I am very sad about this story but it does help to know that he is well loved and cared for. It may be true that the “virus” came from bird excrement, that is one of the things I suspect. I hope that seal is OK in the old enclosure!
