Three Dutch polar bears meet an Australian Dog
Während mein Besuch im Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen, Holland, fiel ich “mit meine Nase in die Butter” – ihr kennt diese Spruch warscheinlich nicht weil sie in Deutschland nicht benutzt wird, aber sicher versteht ihr was ich damit meine wenn ihr weiter lest.
During my visit to Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen, Holland, I fell “with my nose in the butter” – you’re probably not familiar with this saying, as it isn’t used in English, but surely you will understand what I mean by it when you read on.
Gleich bei der Eingang von der Zoo passierte mir schon etwas Märchenhaft. Wer stand dort hinten den Kassen? Ihr willt es nicht glauben, aber es war wirklich so: (Gross)mutter Huggies war dort …
Immediately after passing the zoo’s entrance, something happened to me that was right out of a fairy tale. Who was standing there, right behind the cashier’s house? You will not believe me but honestly, it was: (Grand)mother Huggies – in person …
… und mit einer höflichen Verbeugung rief sie mich Willkommen in der Zoo! Ab und zu, so find ich selbst, sind meine Zoobesuchen mit etwas magisches umgeben, und auch diesmal war es so.
… and with a most cortious bow she bid me welcome to the zoo! Now and then, if I say so myself, my zoo visits are surrounded by a touch of magic, and this was indeed one of those occasions.
Am Morgen tobten den kleinen Siku und Sesi herum, Mit einander, mit eine rote Boje, einen Ball, eine Kiste, ihre Autoreifen-Sammlung, ins Wasser, auf der Baumstamm, in das Grass – wo eigentlich nicht und womit eigentlich nicht! Sie leben in ein Welt wo spielen wichtig ist; den Rhenener Pfleger und Pflegerinnen haben das sehr gut verstanden. Bilder von ihre Morgen-Spiel sind zu sehen in das Knutitis-Forum.
In the morning, litte Siku and Sesi played around. With eachother, with a red buoy, a ball, a crate, their tire collection, in the water, on the tree trunk, in the grass – well, where and with what not! They live in a world where playing is important; the Rhenen zoo keepers understand that very well. You can see pictures of the little bear’s morning games at the Knutitisforum.
Nach einige Zeit deckten den Pfleger der Tisch für den Tiere. In Ouwehands Dierenpark gibt es kein öffentliche Fütterung; das Essen bekommen den Eisbären in alle Ruhe hinten den Kulissen. Also, man sass am Tisch und ich machte eine Zoorunde.
After some time the keepers set the table for the animals. In Ouwehands Dierenpark there’s no public feeding; the meals are served behind the scenes. Well then, the bears were at the table and I took a walk through the zoo.
Wenn ich später zurück kam bei den Eisbären, sah ich schon aus den Ferne das dort eine Menge los war. Dutzende Reporter und zwei Fernsehen-Sender waren, zusammen mit viele Besucher, am Gehege. Was war denn los? Das Antwort bekam ich schnell von ein freundliche Pflegerin. Die Eisbärenfamilie hat ein tolles Aussiedog-Spielzeug von der Zoo bekommen! Und das Geschenk wird gerade heute Mittag an den Tiere herübergereicht!
When I later returned to the bears, I already saw from a distance something was going on there. Tens of journalists and two big TV camera’s were busy watching the proceedings, together with many zoo visitors. What was going on? I got a quick answer from a friendly lady zoo keeper. The polar bear family was to be presented with one of those great Aussiedog playthings! And that present was just handed over this afternoon to the animals!
Hier seht ihr wie Mutter Freedom als Erste das Aussiedog überprüft. Sie muss natürlich sicher wissen ob diese fremde “Australischen Hund” kein Gefahr für ihre Kinder enthalt.
Here you see how mother Freedom is the first to try out the Aussiedog. Of course she has to make certain that this strange “Australian Dog” does not pose any danger to her children.
Siku und Sesi sind aber viel zu Neugierig um lange in den Hintergrund zu bleiben …
Siku and Sesi however are much to curious to stay behind for long …
… und bald ist die ganze Familie mit das neue “Haustier” beschäftigt.
… and soon the entire family is playing and researching the new “pet”.
Nach der ersten Begegnung musste untersucht werden, wie stark die Aussiedog ist. Dafür stehen unseren Eisbären den folgenden Methoden und Techniken zu verfügung.
After the first encounter they had to find out exactly how strong the Aussiedog is. For that, our polar bears have the following methods and techniques at their disposal.
“Puh, dass war eine anstrengende Untersuchung! Jetzt ist Zeit für ein kleines Stücklein Eistorte!” Das hatten sie ja auch noch bekommen. Welches spiel den jungen Bärchen damit machten, lest ihr in ein folgendes Artikel.
“Phew, that was a grueling investigation! Now it’s time for a little morsel of ice cake!” They were treated to that as well. What game the young bears played with the ice cake, you will read it in a following article.

Siku and Sesi are such beauties but this time my heart melted when I saw Huggies welcoming you to the zoo. You’re right – your zoo visits always have a ‘touch of magic’!
I wonder how long that Aussie dog will last even though I know it’s a tough playmate and not very easily broken

each Zoovisit has something magic, I think. This is a really wonderful report with so many beautiful pictures. Such Aussiedog toy brings often great joy.
From my experience with Giovanna&Yoghi, I found out that these Aussiedog toys can hardly be destroyed even by the huge polar bears. In Hellbrunn they seem to prefer the normal plastic cans, barrels, tons, etc. which can be deformed and put into parts

mit großer Freude habe ich Ihren herrlichen Bericht mit den schönen Bildern nun gelesen
Ich bin sehr überzeugt, das dieser Besuch etwas magisches hatte, denn wenn Grossmutter Huggies schon hinter den Kassen die Besucher begrüßt, ist das schon das schönste Erlebnis
Aber Spaß bei Seite, ein Aussiedog ist bei jedem Eisbär gerne gesehen, sie gehen nicht so schnell kaputt und Bär hat richtig Spaß damit.
Die Forellen geben einem Eisbärbecken wirklich etwas lebhaftes, wenn auch evtl. mal einer verschlungen wird, so ist es doch eine Bereicherung für den Jagdinstinkt dieser wunderschönen Tiere.
AUch wir durften mal so eine kleine Jagd miterleben, leider ließen die vielen Menschen vor der Scheibe das Fotografieren nicht zu.Aber allein die Beobachtung ist schon ein Erlebnis.
Ich danke Ihnen sehr für Ihren erlebnisreichen Tag in Rhenen,den Sie hier in KWM mit uns Lesern teilen.

Beste Frans, bij ons in België zeggen ze “met je kont in de boter vallen” in verband met een onverwachte grote meevaller en het is meer dan duidelijk dat jij dit hier hebt meegemaakt. Maar nog meer met de geweldige foto’s van de kleintjes en hun nieuwste speeltje. Ben eens benieuwd hoe lang dat zal leven.

Thank you so much for the wonderful story and fantastic photos from Holland! What a treat to see the family enjoying their new toy so thoroughly.
Every time I see the name Siku, I think of Siku at the Toledo Zoo in Ohio. According to an article I read in Trunkline, a publication of the Louisville (Kentucky) Zoo, it appears that “my” Siku is slated to move from Toledo to Louisville in the fall. Hmmm… perhaps he’s meant to be the playmate (and maybe even mate in a few years) of little Qannik??? Interestingly, the Louisville Zoo is also now the home of Arki, an adult female polar bear formerly from Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. She is the mother of Hudson Polar Bear, who was born around the same time as our precious Knuti- and she’s also the mom to Marty, the Toledo Zoo’s resident adult male polar bear (he was, I believe, her firstborn) and the father of Siku! So… little (well, not so little anymore!) Siku will be living with his grandmother! I just think that’s the coolest (pardon the pun!) thing!

Such precious photos of the polar bear family enjoying their new Aussiedog toy — I wonder if it was as much a pleasure for us to view them as it was for them to be actually playing with the toy. The little bears seem to be demonstrating rapt attention to the toy, and the play is resulting in some quality ‘family time.’ Kudos to the zoo on keeping these intelligent creatures stimulated.

Diesmal musste ich doch glatt “Select month” aufsuchen, um sicher zu gehen, dass ich nichts und niemanden übergehe!
. Seit „Die Hochzeit/The Wedding“, habe ich nun ca. 22 Beiträge ‚nachzuarbeiten’. Ich hoffe, dass ich niemandes Artikel und/oder Fotos übersehen, sage aber schon einmal vorsorglich, dass das falls doch mit Sicherheit keine Absicht ist. Und nun los!
Also beginne ich nun hier mit meinem ersten Versäumnis und arbeite mich ‚bis zum bitteren Ende’ vor

Lieber Frans, Du bist also nun Erster – und ich muss sagen, da hat sich das Zurückblättern zu meinen Versäumnissen schon sehr gelohnt. Wie goldig und lustig! Das Eingangsbild von HUGGIES ist ja schon ein Knüller an EisbärenLiebreiz. FREEDOM mit ihren Rackerchen SIKU und SESI im Spiel mit dem neuen Aussie-Dog-Teil sind hinreißend. Wie goldig sie ihren Hintern in die Luft strecken beim Bearbeiten des neuen Spielzeugs, wie schön sie es Eisbären-gemäß ‘behüpfen’ und wie sie sich damit niederlegen. Wow! Man würde einmal mehr einen ganzen Sack voller neuer Adjektive benötigen, um alles wirklich schön ausdrücken zu können. Und die Krönung zu den tollen Bildern sind ja immer noch Deine BegleitTexte! Einfach zuu schön. Dafür gibt’s heute einmal ein Bussi links und ein Bussi rechts
