Even polar bears need vacation so we decided to visit the Snow Castle in Kemi – it’s a town in northern Finland only 20 kilometers from Mervi’s hometown. The castle is build of snow and ice every Winter. It’s a hotel where you can book a room if you want to spend a ‘cool’ night. There’s also a restaurant and even a chapel!

Auch Eisbären brauchen einmal Urlaub und daher haben wir beschlossen, die Schneeburg in Kemi – das ist eine Stadt in Nordfinland, gerade mal 20 km von Mervis Heimatstadt entfernt – zu besuchen. Die Burg wird jedes Jahr aus Schnee und Eis gebaut. Es ist ein Hotel, in dem man ein Zimmer buchen kann, wenn man eine ’coole’ Nacht verbringen will. Es gibt auch ein Restaurant und sogar eine Kapelle.
It was so cold that Nancy made me wear this hat (Karvareuhka in Finnish). She doesn’t want my cute ears freeze….
Es war dort so kalt, dass Nancy mich drängte, diesen Hut zu tragen (man nennt ihn Karvareuhka auf Finnisch) Sie will nicht, dass meine süßen Ohren erfrieren……
We had so much fun fooling around in the deep snow. Everything looked so beautiful during the ‘blue hour’ – it’s the time just before it starts getting dark.
Wir hatten ja soviel Spaß dabei, im tiefen Schnee herumzutollen. Alles sah so schön aus während der ’blauen Stunde’ – das ist die Zeit, bevor es dunkel wird.
We had booked a large room for three bearsons and everything was to our satisfaction. Is there anything more comfortable than an ice bed? There were cushions and blankets for the two legged visitors but we didn’t need them. Oh, what luxorious suit we had!
Wir hatten ein großes Zimmer für drei Bärsonen gebucht und alles war wirklich zu unserer vollsten Zufriedenheit. Kann es denn etwas Bequemeres als ein Eisbett geben? Es gab auch Kissen und Decken für die Gäste mit zwei Beinen, aber wir brauchten sie natürlich nicht. Oh, was für eine Luxussuite wir hatten!
- Hello! Where’s the bar tender? We would like to have an aperitif before dinner. Maybe a delicious cod liver oil drink? Let’ see if there are any attractive males around…. after all – this is a vacation!
Needless to say we enjoyed local specialities for dinner – mostly salmons but we also tasted cloud berries. They are yellow and very yammy!
- Hallo! Wo ist denn der Barkeeper? Wir hätten gerne einen Aperitif vor dem Diner. Vielleicht einen leckeren Lebertran vom Dorsch? Und lasst uns mal schau’n, ob es hier auch ein paar attraktive Herren gibt…. wir sind immerhin im Urlaub!
Es ist ja wohl auch überflüssig, dass wir noch erwähnen, dass wir das landestypische Essen sehr genossen – meistens gab Lachs, aber wir naschten auch von den Moltebeeren. Sie sind gelb und sehr lecker!
Every Winter there is also an art exhibition. Isn’t this something? We wanted to take it with us to Bärlin but they recommended us just to take a photo. This lovely statue will melt when the Spring comes. What a pity!!
In jedem Winter gibt es dort auch eine Kunstaustellung. Ist das nicht großartig? Wir wollten dieses Werk mit nach Bärlin nehmen, aber man empfahl uns, es lieber bloß zu fotografieren. Diese prima Skulptur wird im Frühjahr schmelzen. Wie schade!!

More icy art. We were really impressed and decided to make our own ice sculptures in the zoo. Maybe we could sell them to the visitors – if the price is right….. maybe 15 salmons would be a fair price for a statue? We must consult our friend Raspi. He’s so business minded and he will know!
Noch mehr Eiskunst. Wir waren wirklich sehr beeindruckt und beschlossen, selbst Eisskulpturen im Zoo zu schaffen. Vielleicht könnten wir sie den Besuchern verkaufen – falls der Preis stimmt … ob 15 Lachse wohl ein fairer Preis für eine Skulptur wären? Wir müssen uns noch mit unserem Freund Raspi beraten. Er ist sehr geschäftstüchtig und er kennt sich bestimmt aus!
This is the lovely chapel. Oh boy, if we ever meet a suitable male we want to get married right here. Imagine a beautiful polar bear couple walking down the aisle…..
Das ist die schöne Kapelle. Mannomann, wenn wir jemals einen passenden Herren finden, dann wollen wir genau da heiraten. Stellt Euch nurmal das vor: eine schönes Eisbärpaar, das in die Kirche bis zum Altar schreitet…..
We also travelled to a little village near Rovaniemi to see the mountains (tunturit in Finnish) and of course, the northern lights. Aren’t the colours magnificent? We even build a little igloo – just for fun.
We will definitely come back here next Winter!
Wir reisten auch in ein kleines Dorf in der Nähe von Rovaniemi, um die Berge zu sehen (auf Finnisch ’tunturit’) und natürlich auch die Polarlichter.Sinddie Farben nicht großartig? Wir bauten uns sogar ein kleines Iglu – aus Lust an der Freud.
Wir kommen im nächten Winter ganz bestimmt wieder!
It’s wonderful to travel but the highlight of travelling is always the home coming! How sweet and cosy it is to be back in our own ‘hotel’. We have no ice beds but we have each other!

Reisen ist einfach wunderbar, aber der Höhepunkt einer jeden Reise ist, daheim anzukommen. Wie schuckelig und gemütlich es doch ist, wieder im eigenen ’Hotel’ zu sein. Wir haben keine Eisbetten, aber wir haben uns!

When I was a little boy, all the neighbourhood kids would team up and dig a cave into one of the huge snow piles formed by the snow ploughs. In my mind it was like the Kemi Snow Castle.
Isn’t it funny that getting home always seems to be the best part of travel.

although “Home is Sweet Home”, of course, the polar bears are in need of a winterholiday.
The GG have chosen wonderful holiday destinations and the holiday photos are fantastic.
I am sure, that all the other polar bears will be gree of envy when watching these lovely photos.
Nancy looks beautiful in her Karvareuhka. I will ask her whether I could borrow it when I visit the Zoo in the terrible cold weather.
