Cubbie Special

Even this year we’ve received many happy polar bear family news. In this Cub Special I want to say ‘Welcome to the world’ to the polar bear babies born in the zoos and even to those born in the world.

We start in Berlin where Tonja – rather surprisingly – gave birth to twins. Unfortunately one of the cubs didn’t make it.

Tonja is a good mother considering that this is her first cub.

The baby bear has been very ‘mobile’ from the beginning and very curious about the surroundings.

These photos (by Tierpark Berlin) were published in late December and we can now admire the velvet eyes and the licorice nose.

When I was in Berlin I heard the good news from Hellabrunn in Munich. Giovanna has a baby boy or a baby girl that’s developing very well. We can follow this family in Anita’s reports in the right column of Knuti’s Weekly.

In Aalborg Malik and Lars have become parent to two cubs. There were three of them but one of them didn’t make it.

The two cubs are doing fine in mama Malik’s loving care.

Even a polar bear mother needs some breaks but Malik leaves her cubs only for very short moments. The Aalborg Zoo allows us to follow this family via a webcam and I managed to take some screen shots:

The babies are moving around the ‘nest’ when mama’s away but soon Malik will bring them close to mama’s warm body.

Webcam Aalborg Zoo – cameras 2 and 3 show Malik and the cubs

In Tallinn, Estonia, Frida gave birth to twins but only one cub survived.

Columbus, Ohio

Anana gave birth to twins but only one them survived. Aurora’s twins are doing fine.

Aurora’s twins have now opened their eyes and they are getting stronger everyday. Both Anana’s cub and Aurora’s cubs are getting more active and are really working their leg muscles! Both moms and their cubs are off-view in their dens until the spring.

I wish all the polar bear mamas and their cubbies best of luck! Dear baby bears, you are so welcome!

  1. SWEET, oh so sweet!

Thank you dear MERVI for presenting us here the best known to us
young polar bear mothers with their cubs.
That’s always such a touching sight.

Wishing GOOD LUCK and HEALTH, a long life, and lots of happy moments, joy and fun during their whole lifetime – to these precious white giants/dwarfs, as much as to any other mothers and children of ALL species,
especially to those in big trouble and desperate straits (you know what I mean!? . . .).

  2. Dear Mervi, all these babies are soo sweet and soooo noisy. Every time when I see (heard) a video of a polar bear mother with baby/babies, I am very impressed about her strong nerves.

  3. Liebe Mervi

Schön, dass Du unsere Cubbie News einmal in einem Beitrag zusammen gefasst hast.
Ich denke, auch in Russland wird es noch irgendwo Kinder geben, von denen wir hier
nichts erfahren. Das sieht doch alles sehr positiv aus! Maybe you´ll see Maliks
Cubbies in summer and maybe I have time for Berlin or Munich – lets see… 🙂

    Grüssle Chris 🙂

  4. For TBM it wouldn´t be too far from Turku to Tallin with the ferrie! 🙂

  5. Dear Mervi!
I wish all babies and their mothers all the best. Tonja’s Baby looks big only if we do not see Tonja next to it 🙂

  6. Liebe Mervi,
ach wie goldig. Möge es allen Eisbär-Müttern mit ihren Babies weiterhin prächtig gehen.
Vielen Dank für diese ‘herzallerliebste’ Zusammenfassung.
    Liebe Grüße, A.B.

  7. Chris – Vesa and I are planning to visit Aalborg together with Inge in the Spring. I can hardly wait … 🙂

  8. Dear Mervi !
What a sweet special! Thank you!
Of course all these cubbies are cute and loveable, but my favorite pics are Nr.5, 6, 7, and 8.
This little polarbear already looks well developed, roundish and good humoured and to my great joy and relief it turned out that Tonja is an unexperienced but nevertheless very good mother.
All the best to all mothers and their babys!

  9. Dear Mervi,

What a great idea to let us all peek into the Kinderstuben / nursery dens.
Aren’t we blessed to watch these precious cubs grow up!

Thank you for making up this very special page.

Best of luck to all polar bear cubs and their dedicated moms!

  10. Liebe Mervi,

  12. Dear Mervi
I have been following the Knuipe and have been adding various Polar Bear items since Christmas.
Your coverage of the cubs is splendid. I am so pleased that we can follow all of them.

  13. Welcome to the world little ones and all the best for your families.

Thanks a lot dear Mervi for showing and telling.

    Hugs Inge

  14. Liebe Mervi,

  15. Dear Mervi,

Thank you so much for showing us all these delightful cubs and their equally delightful mothers!

    Hugs, Sarsam
