20.1.2017 – UPDATED WITH A VIDEO
Polar bear mothers only leave their baby when they need to drink. These breaks give us a possibility to see the cubbie alone. Venus’ cub is developing and growing well as you can see in the video.
Venus’ cub is now eight weeks old and weighs about 3-4 kilos. There’s a short video of the mama and her baby bear.
What does papa Manasse now that he’s a bachelor again? Luckily there’s snow ….
Venus just went to drink water and we had a little while to see the polar bear cub without parent.

I was hoping the year 2017 would be a happy year and today we received the best possible news from Ranua. There’s a sweet polar bear baby!!
Here are the proud parents Venus and Manasse
On the 25th of November 2016 Venus gave birth to twins but unfortunately one of them didn’t make it. Venus took care even of her dead baby a couple of days but then she ate it. This is natural in the polar bear world. The mother needs the nourishment and it’s also important for the hygiene in the den to protect the surviving cub.
These photos are screen shots from a video taped on the 25th of November:
However, the other one is doing fine and has already opened the eyes.
Ranua Zoo wanted to wait until the news were made public because now they can take a sigh of relief since the cub is developing well and looks very healthy. The weight of the baby by birth was about half a kilogram but now it weighs 2-3 kilos. Within the next few months the cub is expected to weigh about 10 kilos.
In late Februari or early in March the visitors will be able to meet the proud mama Venus and her cub.
The keepers are, of course, following the polar bear mama and her baby all the time with cameras and microphones to be sure everything’s going well.
On behalf of the readers of Knuti’s Weekly I send congratulations to Venus, Manasse and all the stuff in the Ranua Zoo! Of course, I also congratulate Ranzo for having a little sister or brother. 🙂
Here’s a link to Ranua’s FB site where you can see a video:
Knuti’s Weekly is, naturally, staying tuned and following Venus and her cub.
WELCOME TO THE WORLD, SWEET BABY BEAR!
