Venus’ baby bear is now 8 weeks old

Jan 2nd, 2017 | By | Category: Ranua 2017

Polar bear mothers only leave their baby when they need to drink. These breaks give us a possibility to see the cubbie alone. Venus’ cub is developing and growing well as you can see in the video.

Venus’ cub is now eight weeks old and weighs about 3-4 kilos. There’s a short video of the mama and her baby bear.

What does papa Manasse now that he’s a bachelor again? Luckily there’s snow ….

Venus just went to drink water and we had a little while to see the polar bear cub without parent.

I was hoping the year 2017 would be a happy year and today we received the best possible news from Ranua. There’s a sweet polar bear baby!!

Here are the proud parents Venus and Manasse

On the 25th of November 2016 Venus gave birth to twins but unfortunately one of them didn’t make it. Venus took care even of her dead baby a couple of days but then she ate it. This is natural in the polar bear world. The mother needs the nourishment and it’s also important for the hygiene in the den to protect the surviving cub.

These photos are screen shots from a video taped on the 25th of November:

However, the other one is doing fine and has already opened the eyes.

Ranua Zoo wanted to wait until the news were made public because now they can take a sigh of relief since the cub is developing well and looks very healthy. The weight of the baby by birth was about half a kilogram but now it weighs 2-3 kilos. Within the next few months the cub is expected to weigh about 10 kilos.

In late Februari or early in March the visitors will be able to meet the proud mama Venus and her cub.

The keepers are, of course, following the polar bear mama and her baby all the time with cameras and microphones to be sure everything’s going well.

On behalf of the readers of Knuti’s Weekly I send congratulations to Venus, Manasse and all the stuff in the Ranua Zoo! Of course, I also congratulate Ranzo for having a little sister or brother. 🙂

Here’s a link to Ranua’s FB site where you can see a video:

Knuti’s Weekly is, naturally, staying tuned and following Venus and her cub.

  2. Dear Mervi!
It is a great news from Ranua.
I keep my fingers cross for the wonderful baby. The baby looks nice.

  3. Dear Mervi
Venus and her little one have come through and of course her other cub will have joined Aunt Vilma in the icefields.
Ranua is a marvelous place for a Polar Bear cub to grow up in.

  4. Liebe Mervi,

  5. Dear Mervi!
    Fantastic news!
Congratulations to the Ranua Zoo and best wishes to Venus and her little one and to Manasse the proud father.
I am happy for you and suppose you and Vesa are already planning trips to one or two cubbies – in Munich, Berlin, Aalborg, Ranua…

  6. Dear Mervi,
the news is already spreading all over Europe, that Ranzo has a little sibling!. Congratulations to Venus and Manasse, congratulations to Ranua Zoo and all the best wishes for the cub and the mom! I’m sure Venus will again be a wonderful mother, she comes from the famous Churchill/Vienna-Clan from Rostock.
I am very happy about the good news!
    Heidi from Erlangen

  7. Dear Britta-Gudrun,

Ranzo is the first cub of Venus and Manasse – he’s also the first polar bear cub ever born in Finland so this newborn is the second precious miracle.

  8. Liebe Mervi

    Chris 🙂

  9. Dear MERVI – Thank you so much for sharing your BIG JOY with all of us!

    Congratulations! to anybody concerned:
Mama VENUS + Papa MANASSE (beautiful photo of their kiss to be seen above!),
the RANUA WiLDLIFE PARK with all their keepers and visitors,
    YOU and TEDDYBAERENMUTTI especially!

VENUS is also such a protecting, ‘nice to look at’ mother, as e.g. GIOVANNA, MALIK and TONJA are!

And the tiny cub is sooooo lovely. Look at this little boddy and head looking out of all of mama’s fur!

  10. Dear Mervi,

  14. OT
Shame – When trying to get in ‘Die KNUIPE’
    that’s what pops up:
Hope nothing went wrong and it’s only a technical break.
Stay in your skin, please, dear MERVI, that’s NO complaint
    but just an INFORMATION!

  15. Dear Mervi,

    Such happy news!

    A trip to Finland!

  16. Liebe Mervi,

  18. Dear Mervi,
the new video shows that a baby is active.

  19. Thank you, dear MERVI, for having brought the link to the latest polar bear cub VIDEO

The baby is as active as is also TONJA’s babay and as this little-one the precious
offspring of VENUS and MANASSE has a little radius but moves wuite a lot.

  20. Dear Mervi, that is wonderful news. Thanks for telling and thanks for the link. Wonderful to see.

    Hugs Inge

  21. Dear Mervi, WAW!!! a little polar bear baby in Ranua (and based on a few details here and there, I think that it is a girl). I wish parents and baby and keepers all the best. The good thing is that Venus is by now a n experienced mother and knows what she has to do with such a precious little baby.

  22. Dear Mervi,
I found a new video. Venus has her paw over her baby. It is possible to see a bit of the baby.
I wish Venus and her baby all the best.

  23. Liebe Mervi,

  24. Thank you very much, dear MERVI, for another interesting and amazing video
of beautiful mother VENUS with her cub sliding over her face/snout in the end of the 2nd video. Sweet.

Again we can see here the huge mother-paws protecting their babies in a very tender manner.
    Awwwww . . . 🙂

  26. Dear Mervi,

Thank you for sharing the update on the Ranua polar bear family.
The little one looks very healthy and strong. The cuddling scene are awesome since the contrasts couldn’t be more impressive – the tiny helpless one and the gentle giant mama.
    Daddy doesn’t look unhappy either.
