Lunch arrives on Wrangel Island, and 230 polar bears show up for the feast!

A bowhead whale beached on the remote outpost in the Arctic Ocean, and the news spread fast among the island’s bears. Just like a flock of sheep, more than 200 bears gather for a feast on the Wrangel Island.

From a distance to tourists on passing ship Akademik Shokalskiy, it looked like a flock of sheep, but it soon became evident these were ravenous polar bears feasting on an unexpected meal.

Nature reserve rangers on the remote island calculated there were no less than 230 polar bears arriving to devour the food. They included single males, single females, mothers with cubs and and even two mothers with four cubs each.

The sight was un unexpected bonanza for tourists on the Finnish-built vessel on part of an epic Arctic voyage from Murmansk to Adadyr in Chukotka.

Information on this unique gathering has been passed to the international scientific group that monitors Chukotka and Alaska’s population of polar bears.

The group had made a layover on the island, famous as the last place on the planet inhabited by the extinct woolly mammoth.

  1. Unbelievable !
I´ve never seen so many bears on one place.

  2. Dear Mervi, WAW, this is a super report!!! A gathering of about 230 polar bears to join the party. And even mothers with cubs. And did I read this well: even mothers with a quadruple????? Na ja, there is sufficient food around for everybody, isn’t it.
Some years ago, I read an article about the cannibalism of polar bears and in this article it was stated that in most cases, young males (younger than 6 years and even shortly after having been chased away by their mother and thus not having yet the required hunting skills) are the culprits for such situations (and drama’s). Oh well, who is to be blamed? It is and will always be the survival of the fittest, no?

  3. Liebe Mervi,

  4. Dear Mervi!
Wow, that must have been quite a sight: so many polar bears in one place all at once!
It´s really amazing how good developed their sense of smell is – and how many polar bears there are on Wrangel Island. I am mightily impressed.
Fortunately they found the dead whale at the shore and thus enough food for many of them.

Thank you for editing this most interesting news!

    Hugs
    Anke

  5. Wow. Ich sahe dieser Nachricht in TV gestern. Ich konnte kaum meine Augen glaube.
Es machte mich schmunzeln. Eisbär contra Lamm.

  6. Dear Mervi This is the most remarkable footage.
Polar Bears have a well established system for
dividing up food. The big males are first in the queue,
then the younger males, females without cubs according
to size, then mothers and cubs. Size is the main
    factor.
In zoos the big females like Valeska are much more
    relaxedvthan smaller ones like Giovanna.

  7. Dear Mervi!
It was a happy day for the polar bears. It is wonderful that there were the mothers mit many cubs too.
    Hugs
    Ludmila

    Monika

  9. Dear Mervi,

What a wonderful world – Louis Amstrong would have added this gathering of bears to his great song had he known about Wrangel island. Or maybe he even did up on his cloud.
    This report is simply awesome.
Thank you for sharing, dear Mervi.

    Hugs
    Bärgit
