Lynn and Nord played ‘catch me if you can’

24.4.2018 by Mervi & Vesa

We have been planning a visit to Copenhagen for months but there was always something that put stop to our plans – a sick cat or a heavy rain. Even the Old Man Winter decided to pay a late visit to us. However, on the 20th of April we could finally take the train to ‘Dronningens by’.

First we had to renew my passport at the Finnish Embassy. Everything went very smoothly so we could continue our Danish odyssee to the zoo. 🙂

We could enter the zoo earlier than we had counted on and after a refreshing soft drink we hurried to the polar bears.

Immediately we caught sight of a cappuccino coloured Lynn! What a good looking bear girl she is! As you may remember Lynn lived in Vienna together with Ranzo but since these two are closely related (Vienna and Churchill were grandparents to both) they had to be separated.

This was the first time we saw Nord ‘live’, too. The other female polar bear Nöel is rather tired of Nord’s intimate invitations so she can take a break now that Lynn is ‘sharing’ the big Russian guy. 🙂

The bears were on the move all the time. It was obvious that Nord wanted to make closer acquintance with his new girlfriend but Lynn wasn’t as enthusiastic …. or maybe she just didn’t want to be an easy catch ….

They were running around in the enclosure – Lynn first and Nord following her. Occasionally they stopped for some seconds.

We could witness some short tender moments …..

….. but then we suddenly saw – and heard – a big splash and the bears disappeared.

We followed them to the ‘tunnel’ where it’s possible to see them on both sides and even above us.

With only the glass wall separating us we could clearly see what a gigantic polar bear Nord is! I strongly advice you NOT to try shake paws with him!! 🙂

After admiring the swimming bears we made a little tour in the zoo and met many other sweet animals. More of that in a separate report later.

When we returned to the polar bears we found an empty enclosure. Well, as you already know Patience is my middle name so we decided to wait. Our patience was rewarded quite soon when Lynn and Nord suddenly appeared.

Lynn jumped up from the water but Nord stayed in the wet element. Maybe he hoped Lynn would join him again.

Oh no, she just passed him and greeted us with a smile.

Nord looked so disappointed.

He put on a sad face – maybe that would soften Lynn’s heart.

Was he dreaming?

Like an elusive furry butterfly Lynn floated past Nord again. The swimming tour had made her fur white again.

Lynn kept walking about while Nord was waiting in the water.

Oh bear, she didn’t stop. Well, I guess I just have to give up ….

Even Nord came up and like a faithful dog he started following Lynn again.

Nord clearly wanted some tralalaa but Lynn wasn’t interested. She let Nord come close ….

….. but that was all. Nord seems to be a very kind gentlebear who accepts ‘no’ for an answer. There was no aggressivity and no growling from neither Nord nor Lynn.

As far as we could see Lynn and Nord are getting along just fine although they have somewhat different ‘interests’ for the time being – at least during our visit. 🙂

Nord seems to have an optimistic mind and maybe Lynn will soon feel mercy with him. 🙂

Yesterday I contacted the Copenhagen Zoo and received this information:

‘Lynn and Nord are VERY fond of each other indeed and animal keepers have seen them mate in the stables Saturday morning. We are all crossing fingers that Lynn will someday have cubs. She is a very good polar bear and she acts like a super star in front of the audience, so clearly the staff in Vienna has done a very excellent job in training her.’

The ‘catch me if you can’ games we saw were probably  polar beary fore plays …. 🙂

As I already wrote this was the first time we saw Nord and we can only say he’s a very handsome chap.

Even though some black spots (his fur was wet) could be seen he has a wonderfully thick fur – just like all Russian polar bears.

Nord has funny ‘eye brows’ which makes it easy to recognize him.

Nord is definitely a very impressive representative for his species!

It’s no wonder Ranzo was charmed by this beautiful lady – and now Lynn is putting a spell on Nord.

The polar bears in the Copenhagen zoo can be observed from many different angles.

I’m glad to tell all Lynn’s friends that she’s doing fine in her new home.

I think this is a face of a happy polar bear …..

We could have admired Nord and Lynn for hours but they decided it was time for swimming and diving again. Due to the fine weather the zoo was very crowded so this time we didn’t follow them to the tunnel. There were simply too many visitors.

It was time to leave our white, fluffy friends but it was really fantastic to meet these lovelies ‘live’ for the first time! Unfortunately we didn’t see Nöel. Maybe she was inside or maybe she was hiding behind the big rocks in the old enclosure.

Information from the Copenhagen Zoo: ‘At the moment we are slowly introducing the females to each other behind bars, so hopefully all three polar bears will be able to be together in the near future. That is our aim.’

Nord seems to be a very good natured male so hopefully he can cope with the two ladies. We all remember Lars living together with Tosca, Nancy and Katjuscha without problems. I wish Nord, Nöel and Lynn all the best and hope they can live together in harmony!

Thanks to the Copenhagen Zoo for the information!

  1. Dear Mervi and Vesa!
How nice you could combine the useful with the pleasure!
In these scary times we should enjoy the happy moments to the fullest…
Thank you for your lively report and the beautiful photos! My favourites are the tender moments and the underwater pics of Nord.

Good to know that Lynn and Nord are doing well together, especially that Lynn is getting used to the new situation with a new male. Both bears look gorgeous. Lynn seems to be able to twist Nord around her little claw 😉 and Nord learns to be sensible with this pretty and capricious new sweetheart.
ItÂŽs a pity he couldnÂŽt ask Lars or Yoghi how to do this.

I hope for a happy ending even for Noél!

  2. Liebe Mervi

Lynn und Nord sehen gut aus.
Nord ist ein gewaltiger BĂ€r !
    Die Unterwasseraufnahmen
    gefallen mir besonders. Ich
    wĂŒnsche Nord, dass er
    spĂ€ter GlĂŒck mit Lynn
    hat. Aber Frauen haben
    ihren eigenen Kopf, das
    wissen wir ja. Vielleicht
    muss Lynn sich noch
    eingewöhnen. Danke
    fĂŒr die schönen Fotos.

    Herzliche GrĂŒĂŸe
    Chris 🙂

  3. Liebe Mervi,

  4. Dear Mervi, this is really a wonderful report. Even though, you were not so happy to see Noel, these both bears are looking great and I really appreciate the back-up news they are prepared to give you. Amazing again what a size difference there is between the male and the female, but more than that, amazing to see how gentle they approach each other. And I am quite sure that one day in a very near future, Nord will learn how to share his life with two pretty girls (just like Lars did and he also did not need any lesson in that regard). Na ja, we can only cross our fingers that Nord is not going to fall asleep during “Tralalala”.

  5. Dear Mervi & Vesa,

    What a delightful report!

    And great photos!

Thank you for bringing us along!

  6. Dear MERVI and VESA

That’s a right MERVI-report as we all love it: the humorous swriting styly, the visible/readable addiction to polar bears in general and the tenderÂŽness towards those present. Thanks for having introduced and shown those two pretty ones to us a bit closer. It was also good to get the origin tone of the keepers in Copenhagen.
Good to know you had a wonderful day in the Copenhagen Zoo and that also your document purposes went smoothly at the Finnish Embassy. . . It’s just a pity you obviously couldn’t meet INGE aus COPENHAGEN at this occasion as well.

Thanks for the report and the beatiful pictures.

  7. Dear Mervi and Vesa,

Thank you for this interesting report with these beautiful pictures!
It’s nice to read again about Lynn and her actions with Nord in Copenhagen!
But I have to say, that I don’t recognize her. I have seen a different Lynn in Vienna, where she was wery active and was trying to get Ranzo’s attention in every way. Maybe she needs some more time… No doubt, she is well trained and knows how ta behave. Nord is older bear and more calm, so Lynn acts differently.
In any case: good luck to all the three bears in Copenhagen!

    With greetings Evi
    from Tallinn

  8. Dear Mervi and Vesa!
It is great that you visited Lynn and Nord. Nord is very interested in Lynn. I think she likes him too.
The pictures under water are wonderful.

  9. Dear Mervi and Vesa !

Thanks for your report and the wonderful pictures. So good to read, that you had a wonderful day. Yes, the bears are wonderful. Also I hope, that all three can live happily together.

    Hugs from Copenhagen

  10. Liebe Mervi, lieber Vesa!

Danke fuer schönes Bericht und wunderbare Fotos.
Schön, dass mit Nord und Lynn gut geht. Hoffentlich bald ist auch Noel mit.

    NĂ€chtliche gruesse aus Finnland

  11. Dear Mervi and Vesa
Thank you for such a fine report with lovely pictures of Nord and Lyn. I hope that Noele will be back with them both soon.

  12. Dear Mervi! Dear Vesa!

Thank you very much for the interesting zoo-report and the wonderful photos. Lynn and Nord are beautiful bears.

  14. dear Mervi,
thank you so much for your great report and all the nice pictures of these wonderful bears. I am glad Lynn and Nord can live together, they are looking very good and are living in a nice home.
dear greetings to you and Vesa

  15. Liebe Mervi, lieber Vesa,

    Knugs Uli
