White furry submarines and snow step in Ranua

4.5.2018 – Photos by Marko Junttila, Ranua Wildlife Park

Terve! Hello! I’ve seen photos of a beautiful polar bear girl (whose name begins with the letter ‘Q’) playing on the green grass but here in Ranua we have to wait for a while until we can see the green stuff.

I don’t mind because the snow and the ice offers mama and me a wonderful playground!

Have you seen submarines with white fur before?

Hahaa, I was just kidding you! It’s mama and I diving in the icy water!

Have I ever told you that many Finns love to jump into icy water after the sauna? Yes, they do and I can understand it perfectly well because it’s so refreshing!

Mama and I like to have chilly discussions ….

Please, feel free to admire my shining white fur!

After a nice bath we like to fool around in the snow.

I just have to know how mama’s fur tastes!

Mommy, let’s dance the snow step!!

Dear boy, I don’t know that dance.

Come on, let me show you! It’s easy – you just have to jump up and down in the snow! You must learn this new dance. I’ve heard rumours you’re going to have a new male friend when I’m leaving. How do you intend to charm him if you can’t dance?

Dancing is quite exhausting so I’d better take a break and look for something eatable.

Mama!! I’ve got a friend – he’s looking at me from the water! Have you perhaps ordered a brother to me??

Come on pal! Let’s shake paws!

Oh no, he’s vanishing!

Mama told me it wasn’t another polar bear. The water is so clear that I could see myself like in a mirror ….. I’m a little disappointed it wasn’t a brother but on the other hand – I must say I liked what I saw ….

Yippee! Our keepers have placed a big piece of meat in our outdoor freezer.

I want to give a hug even to my meat. I believe in being nice to everybear and everything!

Sorry, but now I’m going to eat you.

The snow is getting dirty on certain places in our enclosure ….

… but luckily there are shadowy spots where the snow is still shining white so I can keep my fur presentable!

That’s it for this time. I hope to meet you soon again!

Your pal Sisu

  1. TERVE! . . . Don’t tell me you are still in those masses of snow!? . . NOW, I fist wil have to read to get toknow everything about all those – again very beautiful – pics made by MARKO JUNTTILA . . . .

. . . . MERVI you have outdone yourself another time with your accomapnying texts. I had a good laugh on SISU’s speech to his beautiful mama VENUS. But also the rest of it was priceless and most charming. Thank you.

This we have to stick behind our mirrors! Havn’t we!?:
“I believe in being nice to everybear and everything!” 😉

  2. Dear Mervi and Marko,

Again so fantastic story about Ranua with these wonderful photos! Thank you so much!
Really lovely furry submarines! I think it’s many times better for the polar bears to roll in the white snow and swim in the icy water than play on the green grass…
Both bears: Sisu and her mother look always so handsome- relaxed and happy.

    Greetings from Tallinn
    Evi

  3. Liebe Mervi,

    Britta-Gudrun

  4. Dear Mervi!

Thank you very much for the fine photos of the princess, who the name is beginning with “,Q”. She is a very fine submarine with beautiful white fur.
I wish you a pleasant Friday!

  5. Dear Mervi and Marko!
Thank you for these fantastic, still winterly impressions of the fun-loving polar bears in Ranua.
Needless to mention that both of them look gorgeous.

I´m glad the snow has vanished in our part of the world but I´m happy for the bears that they can still play in it – though my feet are getting cold while watching them …

Venus and Sisu should enjoy these conditions to the fullest!
Spring finally comes, even to Ranua.

    Hugs
    Anke

  6. Dear Mervi
Venus and Sisu always have a magical story to tell. The words and photos go together beautifully. Sisu is growing into a fine looking bear. I wonder who Ms Q is.

    Monika
