‘Manuel’ has charmed everybody in Ranua

31.7.2018 – Photos by Marko Junttila, Ranua Wildlife Park

Sisu has already presented his new ‘fellow citizen’ in Ranua but since Marko has again taken such fantastic photos of this lovely cat I want to present him once more.

I don’t know if he’s got a name yet so I’ve given him a nick name ‘Manuel’. He came to Ranua from the Korkeasaari Zoo near Helsinki.

The Pallas’s cat (Otocolobus manul), also called manul, is a small wild cat with a broad but fragmented distribution in the grasslands and montane steppes of Central Asia. It is negatively affected by habitat degradation, prey base decline, and hunting, and has therefore been classified as Near Threatened by IUCN (Internation Union for Conservation of Nature) since 2002.

A nice tail must be presented, too! 🙂

Manuel lives a life in luxory. Every morning  his enclosure and his little house are cleaned. After that the keepers serve him a yammy breakfast.

While his ‘servants’ are working Manuel does his morning toilette. 🙂

Manuel has made himself comfortable in his new home and despite the somewhat crumpy expression on his face he’s quite happy. 🙂

Did you know that unlike other small cats, the pupils in the eyes of a Pallas’s cat contract to small circles rather than slits.

Manuel is a charming representative of his species so it’s no wonder the visitors love him.

Manuel doesn’t have to hunt because he has a well functioning catering service but he likes to take a walk about in his enclosure.

There’s always something interesting going on – maybe a beautiful butterfly was flying above his head?

As an intelligent reader can guess this is not a manul…. 🙂  🙂  🙂 … but the owl baby is so cute that I just had to present it, too!

  3. Dear Mervi & Marko

What a lovely cat “Manuel” is.
It seems, he loves his enclosure
I like the photos, where he walks
on the green grass. The little owl
is so fluffy and cute ! 🙂

    Chris 🙂

  4. Liebe Mervi,

  5. Liebe mervi und lieber marko!

  7. Dear Mervi and Marko!
The first time I saw a Manul in the Berlin Tierpark some years ago I fell head over heels in love with it.
These cats are simply beautiful and “Manuel” is no exception. Although he´s looking kind of grumpy I ´m convinced all keepers and visitors in Ranua surely love him.
I have a crush on Manuls and am really enthusiastic about these cats. I love their eyes, their fur, their graceful appearance, their everything.
I wish this lovely wildcat all the best and a long and happy life in Ranua.
Thank you for bringing us these stunning pics.

  8. Dear Mervi and Marko
The Pallas Cat is a very rare and shy animal and very vulnerable to infection. His expression always reminds me of Garfield. I hope he will continue to live well in Ranua.

  10. Dear Marko
    Dear Mervi

Two Manul cats live in Hellabrunn. Unfortunately, you hardly ever see them.
So I am very happy about the great pictures.
    Thank you a lot.

  11. What can I do to get the chance to cuddle with the as charming as fluffy-furry MANUL
    AND with the sweet oal??

What a most appropriate name for the ‘MANUL’* the RANUA WILDLIFE PARK did find.
    A hug to MANUEL!
