Winter has arrived in Orsa

Unfortunately we had to abandon our plans to visit Orsa but Johanna Berglund – one of the polar bears’ keepers – kindly posted this article. Thank you so much!

Our three polar bears are doing fine. We separated them on the 27th September so Ewa is now staying in the upper enclosure while Wilbär and Hope share the lower enclosure.

Ewa has had problems with her fur during previous Autumns but this year her fur looks better than ever. She has also made great progress minimizing the stereotype walking which she used to do sometimes.

We had a long hot Summer but now the weather is getting colder and we hope we can fix some snow for Ewa soon. Last year she wanted to ‘hibernate’ on a snow heap so we want to help her. However, Ewa has been collecting twigs and willowherbs in a stable and we’ve made a cosy bed for her in the ‘nursery’ in case she would like to retire there. We have no big hopes for cubs this time. When Ewa was in heat Wilbär was more interested in Hope and we don’t know if matings between those two actually took place.

Wilbär is very tired at the moment. He has periods now in the Fall when he is quite tired and lazy. He rests very much, baths in the pond and does not eat very much. He is very sweet and caring with Hope but when it comes to food he makes sure he’s the number one. After making his point clear he usually willingly shares the food with Hope. Wilbär is like Wilbär has always been. 🙂 Most probably he’s waiting and looking forward to snow!

Hope grows and eats properly! However, we have not seen Hope eating the cadaver we have given the polar bears. Wilbär and Hope got a horse this week but we do not think she has understood that she can eat it so we have given her another kind of food in the stable. Hopefully WiIlbär will teach her soon!

Hope is also trying to find her place and get used to the environment, etc. Some people have commented on her whining on Facebook, as you may have seen. We do not feel that it’s such a big problem when she’s a new inhabitant in the park. She doesn’t do stereotype walks – short distances using the same way – very often. We keep on trying to give her what she needs so walks will stop totally.

She is a bit scared of the brown bears she can see in the neighbouring enclosure. Now the brownies are hibernating but Hope still keeps looking for them.

Before the brown bears started hibernating they were treated with a substantial meal!

The wolverine isn’t planning a Winter nap but enjoys the white landscape.

Isn’t this blanket with Ewa and Wilbär nice!

  1. Liebe Mervi,

  4. Dear Mervi and Johanna!
Thank you for the latest news from Orsa.

Good to know that Hope is doing well, she looks smashing. With Wilbär´s fondly support she will get used to the new enclosure and the food for sure… – and to the brownies!

I´m happy too that Ewa got rid of her fur problems and wish her sweet dreams in the den her keepers made quite comfortable for her.
I wish everybody in Orsa – staff and animals -a beautiful wintertime!

    Hugs
    Anke

  5. Dear Mervi and Johanna
Thank you such a detailed account of Wilbaer, Ewa and Hope. I am sure that they will all enjoy a snowy Winter.

  6. Dear Mervi!
Thank you for the interesting report from Orsa. I hope Wilbär will manage next spring to mate with both females. It is not an easy for him.
Hope looks beautiful. She will learn to use a big enclosure and to eat the other food.
I wish Eva the calm winter sleep.
    Hugs
    Ludmila

  7. Dear Johanna

Thank you very much for the information from Orsa.
I think the bears look good. It’s a pity that Hope still has a problem. I hope they will subside.

    Dear Mervi
Too bad you can’t go to Orsa.

    Hugs,
    Anita

  8. Liebe Johanna, liebe Mervi,

So viele Trauben.

    Monika
