Magic moments with Knut and TD

5.8.2019 – by Knuti-Judi and Barbara, Collage by Dumba

When I asked Knut friends tell about their sweetest memories of him there were many answers. This time we celebrate the 5th of the month with two contributions.

Love is everywhere – Knuti-Judi

The Hartmuth photo of Knuti and TD is my favorite photo of all time. It is so beautiful seeing baby Knuti so safe and secure in his Papi’s arms that he fell asleep. And Papi is so tenderly holding and loving him. Just a beautiful picture which captures their connection.

And “The Dive” series by Liesel is a joyous collection of photos of TD and Knuti at play in the water. TD and Knuti play together with such exuberance that the pictures make me smile broadly everytime I view them. Knuti carefully comes up to TD and knows that TD is playing with him; the build up is delicious; and then just at the right moment, TD dives into the water and Knuti follows with shear joy and love written all over his dear face. They are having the time of their lives!…. These pictures are full of life and love….

Magic Moments I’ll never forget!

To work or not to work – Barbara

During october 2007 there were rumors and pictures – that were not to be commented too loudly – that the keeper and the bear could be seen very early in the morning, thoroughly preparing the mulchbed for the day together *hint*. You had to be at the gate at opening time and speed to Knut’s enclosure.

On october 24 some early birds assembled at the zoo gates half an hour before opening time. You never know who gets scent of rumors like this.Good viewing positions at the then freely accessible pane were mandatory. We had been briefed that if Knut was on his mulchbed at opening time there would be no tussle. So we were shifting from one foot to the other eagerly waiting for any movement at the gates.

Ah, the gate is opened! Quick quick Mr. Ticket Check scan my ‘Jahreskarte!

Racing all the way to Knut’s enclosure, ripping my camera of it’s bag, nearly dripping the front cover of the lens, my heart was beating fast. Would Knut be out already? Twenty meters to the enclosure, ten, five, a glimpse of white fluffy anywhere to spot? Pfeew, nooo. Thank goodness!

A few minutes later bear and keeper come in view through the hole in the rock face, the keeper carrying a very large shovel. He tries to do his work and heap upt the mulchbed. To no avail. The bear has other things in mind. And so we are treated on the most breathtaking tussling – tickling,- caressing act you can imagine.

  1. Dear Mervi,
thank you for the sweet memories of Knut and TD. It was an exciting time as Knut learnt swimming.

  2. Dear Mervi!
Thank you for these indeed magic moments with Knut and Thomas Dörflein experienced by Knuti-Judy and Barbara on occasion of Knut´s monthly birthday.
Dumba, Thank you too for this beautiful collage!

Everyone who had the possibilty to witness this true fairy tale has own precious memories and moments he/she will never forget.
We had a memorable and beautiful time and the world with Knut and all his friends in it seemed to be brighter then…
    Forever in our hearts!

  3. This time this is a right gift for me.

Thank you very much, dear MERVI, for having digged out these two most precious stories and the acccompanying pics. I did know neither of them until this ‘re-publication’. . . . What treasures these are! . . .
Of course, I had seen the famous series of photos (priceless!!) in KNUDY’s contribution (which I obviously had missed earlier for some reason).

Completely new is BARBARA’s thrilling story/contribution to me. I cannot believe that it had been published at that time. I am sure a ‘Sturm der Entrüstung’ would have risen by certain parties (the supposedly privileged ones 😉 ) . . . It is also special, as Barbara has already passed away in the meantime – still in young ages 🙁

  4. Dear Mervi and Dumba

The journey of life seems to mean losing some people along the way, while gaining others. In the years that have passed since Knut was born in December 2006 this has seemed particularly true. Here we remember friends that we have lost, but of course elsewhere in Knutis Weekly we are constantly meeting new friends.

  5. Dear Mervi,

How wonderful to see this again!!

    Such incredible memories!!

    Thank you!!

  6. Liebe Mervi,
