1.8.2019 – Photos by Marko Junttila, Ranua Wildlife Park

Terve! Hello! I have some great news for you! Being a well mannered polar bear isn’t so easy so I’m writing a book.  I thought a ‘Guide to Good Table Manners’ would make a good start! Most bears in my age already know how to eat their food with great elegance but my younger friends probably need some good advice.

First you must, of course, make sure that your catering service personnel will serve your food in a pool with fresh water. Hmmm, maybe I have to write a book for the keepers as well ….

This day we were treated with very yammy stuff. Luckily Marko came during our lunch hour so I can illustrate my book with his excellent photos!

Some exercise before eating is necessary so I have to spend some time diving and looking for the food.

Yippee! I found a carot! I hope you can see me … 🙂

Oh, there’s an apple, too but now I’m focusing on eating the carot.

Every well mannered polar bear knows how to keep a carot nicely between the paws.

Playing with your food is highly recommended! We polar bears really know how to enjoy a meal – playing with it makes it double as yammy!!

Now you can eat it.

Now it’s time for a lesson with an apple. First you have to find it, of course. 🙂

Please, don’t forget the elegant use of your paws! Ooops! I accidentally already had a teeny weeny bit of it …

I decided to bring the red fruit to the shore having only my paws in the water.

An apple a day keeps the vet away. I hope a half of an apple will do the trick as well!

This is soooo yammy!

The ‘cream of the cake’ – The ice bomb

The grande finale of our lunch was a nice ice bomb.

A quality control must be done so, please, make sure it looks OK!

Oh yeah! This is perfect!

Again I want you to notice the grace and elegance of the paws.

I must keep my eyes closed when I eat this yammy thing. I hope I’m not dreaming …. 🙂

The ice bomb is a piece of art so it’s a pity to eat it ….

…. however, it even looks so yammy so I just have to open my big mouth! 🙂

Relaxing after a good meal is also very important so a cool swimming tour is a perfect ‘dessert’ – and after that maybe a nice nap.

Finally I want to send my best Summer greetings to my big brother Ranzo, his lovely girlfriend Nora and my good friend Aron in Tallinn. Of course, I even wish all the readers of Knuti’s Weekly a pleasant late Summer!

See you soon again! Maybe with a new capture in my book ….

Your pal Sisu

  1. Hello, dear Sisu!
So glad all is FINE with you, a little lovely Furry Friend!
Thank you so much for your good wishes to ARON.
I just visited him…He was happy today – played with his new toy, that he got from me.
Of course, we always talk about you, too and ARON also greets you!

Many thanks, dear Mervi and Marko for this very lovely story!
I’m sure, NORA and RANZO also will get Sisu’s greetings and they will be vary happy, too!

    Best wishes and many greetings,
    Evi from Tallinn

  2. TERVE! – Du süßer ‘Luftblasenproduzierer’ (Bild 8 von oben!) und Dauerquatscher (sehr liebevoll gemeint naturellement!). So, that was my first impression and what came to my mind at first sight. . . . But of course, you special lovable polar bear have greater ideas! WOW! Book-project! And how convincingly you demonstrate all your ‘SISUer’ (mind: ‘Knigge’).

Be sure: the manicure of your paws is just PERFECT! And so are MARKO’s pics. Tell him he’s a ‘genius’ or may be something even greater, as the expression should exceed Number 45’s slef-praise by far! . . . . And an even ‘higher expression’ has to be found for the subtitles of your private ‘lectrice’ MERVI
So much fun! – Thanks to the three of you.

Have continuous fun and joy together, all the three of you!

Looking forward to the publication of the prospected book of you keepers
“How to feed a polar bear properly” 😉

  3. Dear Mervi and Marko
I think Sisu’s book of eating manners and diet would be an excellent guide to the two legged people who like to eat with their hands

  4. Dear Marko, dear Mervi!
Thank you for the wonderful pictures of Sisu. He is very skillful with his paws.

  5. Lieber Sisu,

  6. Dear Mervi and Marko!
    Dear Sisu! Terve!
Thank you for this fanciful and entertaining report and the fabulous photos of Sisu, the gourmet bear.

Every one who loves bears, no matter what colour, knows they are well-mannered eaters and very skilful in handling their food. A book about “dine in style” for interested young bears is a good idea and would be great!

There were aside from Sisu already some famous examples of bears who could have given helpful hints to all the youngsters too .

First of all the brownies in the Berlin Zoo: nobody who witnessed the feedings in the past would ever forget how clever they managed to catch fishes, plain rolls and carrots with their snouts.
And polar bear boy Knut was a real artist in catching his food! Once he managed to handle a fish and a baguette the same time. His special preferences were croissants and grapes since he was a real connaisseur…
The Golden Girls could be seen laying walnuts upon their paws before cracking the shells in their muzzles and eating them.
But the most stylish eater was our dear Bao Bao. He always sat down for lunch and It was a pleasure to watch him while enjoying his sugar cane, carrots and even the bamboo.

Sisu is a very self-confident young bear since he walks in great footsteps… 😉 Fortunately he already knows most of the tricks from learning by doing.

So I´m looking forward to reading Sisu´s book that perhaps will mention all these examples of bears who dined with style and delight.

  7. Liebe Mervi, lieber Marko

  8. Dear Sisu

I’m thrilled with your table manners. Many people could learn from you.
Thank you for the nice pictures and the delightful text.

    Hugs and best wishes,

  9. Liebe Mervi, lieber Marko,
