White magic in northern Finland

30.10.2019 – Photos by Marko Junttila

During the 22nd and 24th of November 2019 WC competitions in alpine skiing (women’s and men’s slalom) will take place in Levi in Finland. That’s why I though it would be suitable to show some of Marko’s excellent photos from Levi.

levi5

Levi is a fell located in Finnish Lapland, and the largest ski resort in Finland. The resort is located in Kittilä municipality and is served by Kittilä Airport and Kolari railway station. At a latitude of 67.8° north, it is located approximately 170 km (110 mi) north of the Arctic Circle.

What are those dark spots in this photo?

levi4

They are, of course, reindeers which are the ‘national animals’ in the north of Finland.

levi2

Let’s take a little closer look ….

levi1

Hopefully these reindeers aren’t too hungry because it isn’t easy to find lichen under the snow. However, these animals are quite skilful to find it.

Hello Marko and all the readers of Knuti’s Weekly!

levi8

I’m a bit shy but very photogenique!

levi3

The days are very short this time of the year but some sun rays can be seen.

levi6

The ‘blue hour’ paints the landscape in beautiful pastel colours.

levi11

Many people think the ‘kaamos’ is dark and dull. It’s not true! In the late afternoon everything turns into a blue dusk …..

levi10

….. and thanks to the white snow it’s not very dark in the evenings either. When there’s a full moon it feels just like the day light. If you’re lucky you can even see the northern lights in the sky!

levi9

Let’s hope there will be lots of snow in Levi even during the WC competitions!

  1. Simply breathtakingly BEAUTIFUL!

Thank you for howing these gorgeous pictures of your homeland, der MERVI and dear MARCO.

btw: Some days ago I met two friendly women from Finland right in our neighborhood. I did develop ‘an ear for the Finnish language in the course of the years and that’s why I asked them whether they came fron Finland 🙂 . . . One of them had studied in Berlin or was at least in Berlin 50 years ago – she’s a teacher for German, as her accompanying friend was as well. She mentioned she lives in a town up North in Finland starting with a ‘K’. Unfortuntely I didn’t keep in meind the name of the town. Possibly it was the one you are talking about here now. In this case on a positive level: hasn’t the world got kind of a village in some aspects of life!?

Best regards from here to TEDDYBÄRENMUTTI and TEDDIBÄRENVATI as well as to your own Finnish family including the soft paws, dear MERVI.

  4. Lieber Marko,
    liebe Mervi,

    Winterkind bist!

Herzliche Grüße und Dank besonders an den Starfotografen Marco!
    Britta-Gudrun

  5. Dear Mervi and Marko!
Thank you for these gorgeous photos from the kingdom of the Snow Queen.
They are fabulous and could be taken from a fairy tale book.
The reindeers look wonderful, with warm winter coats and well nourished, but in the course of winter it will definitely become difficult for them to find food under the thick blanket of snow.
The landscape is breathtaking and an amazing sight in the blue hour.

    Hugs
    Anke

  6. What a beautiful winter-landscape.
Thank you for the nice photos
dear Marko and Mervi ! 🙂

  7. Liebe Mervi und lieber Marko,
wunderschöne Bilder aus dem tiefverschneiten Finnland!
Vielen Dank und einen schönen Winteranfang
    Liebe Grüße Moni K

  8. Liebe Mervi,

    Monika
