Cranbeary was born on the 21st of November 2001 in Denver. In October 2018 she came to Anchorage to join the male polar bear Lyituik. Sadly Lyituik died last year so Cranbeary is now the only polar bear in the Alaska Zoo.

Although Cranbeary was born in November we celebrate the time of year during which wild polar bears are born in their dens, along with a chance to say hi to Cranbeary after her time in the den!

We had an awesome time this past Saturday at our Polar Bear Birthday Party event!

It was cold and at times subzero, but we had staff, volunteers and some very dedicated visitors who came to watch the fun unfold as Cranbeary received her elaborate enrichment courtesy of zoo staff and Copper River Seafoods, Inc.

First there was a big white cake made of snow with eatable decorations.

What a gigantic cake – very suitable for a beautiful polar bear lady!

Oh bear, it smells so good!

The decorations look very yammy ….

It’s almost a pity to eat the decorations ….

… so Cranbeary just admires the cake.

The blue birthday cake was an abstract polar bear! What a piece of art! Just look at those cute ears!

The keepers and our friends have been using a lot of imagination creating this cake!

The birthday bear even wanted to take a bath in the freezing cold water. Of course, she wanted to look presentable on her special day!

The two legged creatures would be freezing but for Cranbeary the water temperature was just right!

That swim was really refreshing!

After a chilly bath it was time to roll in the snow. There were surprises for her all over the enclosure.

She found a new suprise ….

What a fantastic party with so many gifts!

It looks like Cranbeary feels almost embarrassed by all the attention. 🙂

Thank you, dear keepers and visitors for a wonderful day!

There are more photos in John’s birthday album where you can see how the cakes were made and, of course, more photos of the birthday bear Cranbeary!

  1. Dear John & Mervi

What a nice birthday party for Cranberry.
And so many wonderful gifts ! 🙂

    Chris 🙂

MERVI – unfortunately there is no entry in the Knuipe in the moment.

  2. Dear John, dear Mervi!
Thank you for the wonderful pictures of Cranbeary’s birthday. Her birthday cake was very nice.
It is very sad that Lytik passed away and Cranbeary is alone now.

  3. Dear Mervi and John!
Cranbeary is a gorgeous and beautiful representative of her spezies.
Her marvellous birthday party with the magnificent birthday cakes proved how much she is loved by the keepers and the whole staff in the Alaska Zoo.
The photos are wonderful and really heart-warming! – though I´m freezing while watching them …
Cranbeary was obviously very happy about her presents.

I´m still so sorry for the loss of Lyituik.
Hopefully Cranbeary will not stay alone for long!

    Thank you for sharing!

  4. Liebe Mervi,

  5. Dear Mervi
It is wonderful to see these pictures of Cranbeary. Alaska Zoo lost its two “house” bears far too soon. I hope that Cranbeary will have a long and happy life there.

  6. Lieber John, liebe Mervi!

Das nenn ich mal eine gelungene Party! Danke fuer die tollen Bilder, Cranbeary hat sich sichtlich gefreut ueber die wunderbaren Geschenke.

    Liebe Gruesse, Erika

  7. Thank you very much dear Mervi and John.
Happy birthday Cranbeary. Best wishes to you.
