Vienna: The ice princess has a name now – FINJA!

This year the Valentine’s Day was a very special day in the Tiergarten Sch├Ânbrunn in Vienna. Nora presented her – and Ranzo’s – baby bear to the visitors for the first time! The media had already chance to meet the sweetie on the previous day but now it was the visitors’ turn.

Nora came out and seemed to be checking that everything was OK.

And then the tiny cubbie appeared following her.

Doesn’t Nora look proud – and with all reason, too! We don’t know yet if the baby is a girl or a boy but one thing’s for sure – he/she is a real sweetie pie.

No doubt this baby will be the visitors’ darling!

I’m sure the uncles Aron in Tallinn and Sisu in Ranua are very proud of their little niece or nephew. čÖé

After the months in the den it must have been wonderful for Nora to take a sip of water outdoors ….

…. and after a refreshing drink it was time for a nice bath. We have learnt to see Nora always very white and fluffy so I’m sure she’s been waiting for this opportunity …. čÖé

Although Nora enjoyed her bath very much she kept an eye on her baby all the time.

When the baby came very close to the edge Nora was there preventing her cubbie from falling in the water.

There were some snacks availabe for the mama and the child.

Even light food can be quite heavy for a tiny cubbie.

A little rest …

… and after that it was time to explore the enclosure.

The world is soooo big!

The baby seems to be looking for a safe place ….

…. and he/she found it!

Staying between mama’s paws is the best place in the world!

The baby bear is still very small but I was impressed by the determined steps when he/she walked around in the enclosure.

This cubbie is very special to me because the father is Ranzo – the first polar bear ever born in Finland!

I wish Nora, Ranzo and their baby all the best and, naturally, the same to their keepers!

Dear Jutta! Thank you so much for the permission to publish your photos even in this magazine!

  1. Dear Jutta and Mervi

Well done Schoenbrunn Zoo not only have you been caring for Panda Babies now you have a beautiful Ice Princess or Prince.
Photograph Number 3 shows a Proud Mother and cub very lovely

  2. Hallo Jutta & Mervi

    Bear Hugs

  4. Dear Juta, dear Mervi!
Thank you for the pictures of Nora and her cub. The cub looks very small next to Nora. I can understand, that Nora needed a bath first after staying some month in the den.
I wish Nora and her baby all the best.

  5. Dear Mervi!
You are for sure very proud of your Finnish Viking!
Congratulations to Nora and Ranzo on the birth of their first cub!
The little one is an enterprising sweetie and Nora a caring and loving first time mother.
She obviously enjoyed the urgently needed bath.

Hopefull Ranzo as a young and probably lonesome father is doing well too!

  6. Liebe Mervi,

  10. Dear MERVI – I can fully understand that this litttle one is a special precious cubie for you, our ‘Viking mother (of former strong Viking tom cat MIFFE’ čÖé ) . . . Thank you for having brought those precious pictures also to us and for having added your personal words and for the whole editorial work, of course.

Jutta KIRCHNER is a gifted animal photographer – her pics of the polar bears (already since OLINKA and her cubies and most probably even earlier) are always so well made and chosen. . . . Consequently “thank you very much!” also – last not least – to her.

All the best! – health and happiness for NORA’s and RANZO’s offspring, for themselves as well, of course AND for anyone else responsible and/or in touch with them!

  12. dear Mervi and dear Jutta,
thank you so much for all these wonderful pictures from Vienna, it is so nice to see Nora and her sweet cub
I send many good wishes to Ranzo, Nora and the baby bear.
dear little baby bear please stay often between Mama`s paws and enjoy her warm fur
    dear greetings and paw waves

  13. Ohhhh, this little GIRL is so-so wonderful !!!!!
SHE is full of energy …….., 100% NORA’s copy ……,
like a spark of fire !!!!

    Many greetings,

  14. Dear Evi,

Our ice princess certainly is full of energy! What turbo speed already! čÖé

    Have you any name suggestion/s?

  15. I hope, they will find a nice and
unique name for the little girl. čÖé

  16. Liebe Jutta,

  17. Dear Jutta and Dear Mervi, thank you so much for sharing these pics with us. I can only but agree with all others. Baby is cuter than cute and mamma is obviously enjoying her first well-deserved and well-needed bath. And OH MY, the world is big from the point of such a petietje but baby knows that the safest spot is always: staying close to mamma.

  18. Congratulations once more to VIENNA:

    Perfect name choice with . . .F- I – N – J – A ! – ! – ! . . . a very nice name, really!

I am convinced EVI in Tallin/ESTONIA [ biggest fan ever of NORA who was born in TALLIN! ]
as well as MERVI in Malm├Â/SWEDEN [ but a right FINN as FINJA’s papa RANZO! have permanent
smiles on their faces from now on (laufen von nun an nur noch freudestrahlend durch die Gegend) čÖé

  19. Liebe Mervi,

  20. Dear Mervi and Jutta!
