My First Visit to Flocke Part 3 – Underwater cubs

Tuesday morning found me at the glass in front of the large water tank in the upper enclosure at Marineland. My plastic bag soon attracted the attention of Raspi’s daughter Tala. She was playing with me, full of curiosity.

Tala may be the smallest member of the family but like all female Polar Bears she is very strongwilled and intelligent. She was determined to investigate me thoroughly.

Other people naturally also wanted to play with Tala. The glass underwater screens are one of the best enrichment tools you can have. Every Zoo with them allows a really close encounter with inquisitive and playful Polar Bears.

Other visitors were soon playing with Tala. The tanks are filled with filtered seawater from the Mediterranean which is next door to the park. In the bright sunshine the water was a brilliant blue. Tala was fascinated by the various phones pointed at her.

The cubs are very good natured with one another and enjoy playfighting but never seemed to actually fight. The two boys, Indiana and Yuma were not at the glass as often as Tala.

Any object becomes a toy. An old bone or some grass will do.

Tala seems to hover in the water as she concentrates on her toy.

The cubs have grown considerably in the last few months. Although I was sorry to miss them looking as small and cute as Imaq last year in Copenhagen, it was really special to see three healthy growing cubs. Some idea of how big they are can be seen when you remember how tall the viewing windows are.

    Britta-Gudrun

  3. Dear Ralph,

After the difficulties to arrange your trip to Antibes you were richly rewarded by Tala, Yuma and Indiana – mostly Tala this time. 🙂

You have managed to take wonderful photos of the kids playing in the water. Of course, the highlight is Tala flirting with you. That girl already knows how to steal a man’s heart! 🙂

The big glass windows give the visitors a fantastic wiew of the polar bears. To see them so close is an experience one can never forget.

Thank you so much for this great report!

    Hugs from Mervi

  4. Dear Ralph!
Thank you for these really great snapshots at the pane of the polar bear enclosure in Marineland.
You managed to present sweet Tala very lively and charming. I´m quite enthusiastic about the underwater photos you took. Even the boys Indiana and Yuma were curious enough to come and have a look at you and your shopping bag…
It is obvious you had a great time and due to that I´m happy for you since before there were some serious obstacles to get there. So I like to join Mervi: you were richly rewarded!
Thank you too for the subtitles and explanations. Very much appreciated!

    Hugs
    Anke

  8. Lieber Ralph

    Anita

  9. Little girl bears are always fascinated by your shopping bag, Ralph. You certainly had a good time with Raspi’s little girl. So glad you could make the trip. They grow up so fast.

  11. Lieber Ralph,

  12. Lieber Ralph!
