The early Spring in northern Finland is very white so the animals in the Ranua Zoo can enjoy the white element a few more weeks.

Venus and Nord (in the photos) haven’t met each other yet. The EEP coordinator has recommended Ranua to avoid breeding this year.

The white giants are sniffing the air and feeling the scent of each other. Of course, they’re both very curious to know what’s on the other side of the wall between the two enclosures. When the mating season is definitely over Venus and Nord will meet.

Oh bear, I just have to wait …. well, at least I can take nice walks in the snowy enclosure!

They say that Venus is a very beautiful polar bear lady. I hope she will find me handsome ….

The lynx sisters Lusija and Jakobine are newcomers in the zoo. For the time being there are no plans to have a male lynx but maybe later there will be a gentlelynx. It’s wise to avoid breeding if there aren’t concrete plans where to place the babies when they grow up.

I’m sure the beautiful sisters are quite happy living together.

Jemma woke up in the beginning of March.

Jemma-3

Oh bear, is there even a white version of me? 🙂

Jemma-13

Dear tree, would you like to dance with me? Or shall I just shake you? 🙂

Malla-12

Malla slept a little longer but now she’s also having lots of fun in the snow.

A snow bath after the long hibernation is very refreshing!

Maybe I can find a way to tease the keepers ….

Malla-19

Here I come ….. would you mind having a snow shower?

Manu loves to stroll around in the snow.

The arctic fox is still very white.

Since I can’t meet the lady on the other side of the wall I spend a lot of time sleeping ….

  1. Liebe Mervi,

    Britta-Gudrun

  2. Dear Mervi
Ranua and its animals are always a special treat.
Nord of course is an old friend from 2019 when I was able to getreally close to him at Aalborg Zoo. I am sure he is enjoying the snow and sniffing the air for Venus

  3. Dear Marko, dear Mervi!
The pictures are wonderful. For me it still looks like winter.
I hope Nord and Venus can spend the time in summer together.
    Manul looks wonderful.
    Hugs
    Ludmila

  4. Dear Mervi and Marko!
Thank you for the fabulous pictures from Ranua, which show that the winter lovers among the animals can still pursue their pleasure in the snow. They seem to want to enjoy the white splendour until the very last day. The bears, whether white or brown, and the cats look marvellous in the sun and snow.

After the flood of baby polar bears in recent years, I think it’s reasonable to stop breeding for the time being.

    Hugs
    Anke

  5. Dear Meriv and Marko

I hope Venus and Nord get along.

The lynx in the snow look great.
    The bears enjoy the snow.
I haven’t seen a manul in the snow yet. But probably an arctic fox. They look very enchanting in the snow.

Thanks for the fine pictures and information !

    Hugs,
    Anita

  7. Thank you very much dear Mervi and Marko.
Best wishes to Venus, Nord and the other animals in Ranua.
