Drama with a cangoroo baby in Copenhagen

On the 21st of September some visitors in the Copenhagen Zoo noticed that a small cangoroo baby had fallen out of it’s mother’s pouch. They called the keepers to help the baby to find the mama.

The baby must be picked up by it’s mother but for some reason this mama didn’t do it.

Usually a cangoroo baby leaves the mama’s pouch at the age of 8-9 months but this baby is only about 3-4 months old.

The baby was places in a bucket with warm blankets.

Some detective work by the keepers was needed to find out which one of the cangoroos is the mother of the fallen baby.

This one was very interested and smelled the basket …..

…. but she didn’t want to pick up the baby.

A vet was called and he decided to give the ‘mama candidate’ a light anesthesia so they could examine her pouch and help the baby to get back to the safety.

Because the baby doesn’t master the long legs it needed help to get in the pouch.

When the mama woke up again she seemed to accept the baby so the vet and the keepers were sure she is the mother.

She started to lick the baby.

The vet and the keepers are, of course, keeping an eye on the mama and the baby but everything seems to be OK now. This drama luckily had a happy ending.

  2. Liebe Mervi,

fein, dass das Drama ein Happy End gefunden hat und die Pfleger und Pflegerinnen so aufmerksam
waren und die Mutter ihr verschütteltes Kind wieder angenommen hat.

    Herzliche Grüße

  3. I am so happy everything went fine.
Best wishes to the kangaroo mum and her baby.

  4. Dear Mervi
Thank you for posting this story. Fortunately the keepers and medical team at Copenhagen Zoo were on hand
to rescue the little Joey. In the wild the baby would have
    been lost

  5. Dear Mervi!
Thank you for this heartwarming story!
I suspect that everyone who saw this fragile and helpless baby had his fingers crossed that it could be reunited with its mum.
Fortunately, the keepers managed to bring this drama to a happy ending.
I hope the little one can now grow up in its mother’s pouch for the last four or five months until it is time to leave it for good!

    Liebe Grüße,Erika
