Nancy and Katjuscha make an extraordinary discovery

As we all know, a zoo is an amusement park for humans. In some zoos they feel it is important that the animals who live there, have a good life. Moreover, they feel that such a good life is more important than amusing the human visitors.

In other zoos, however, fun for humans comes almost always first above anything else.,/p>

There are also zoos where one does not think about fun at all – not for humans, not for animals. No, the exhibition of nature, that’s the only thing that counts – with of course the exception of the youngest primate family, who calls itself ‘humans’. Therefore, it’s an incomplete collection, although they don’t see it that way. A pity really, because I know several very appropriate candidates to exhibit in an enclosure for humans in a zoo.

And then there are still other zoos, where one thinks one can protect wild animal species on a surface no larger than a couple of football fields. Or where one tries to find out how many species one can collect on just one little piece of earth. The fact that protection of a species can in most cases only take place in it’s natural habitat, and that the mother of all species-collections has already been made, and in an insurpassable way at that – ‘Planet Earth’ is the name of this collection – has, seemingly, not come up yet in the minds of the people in charge. Eventually, though, it will.

With science – indispensable to expand knowledge about and interest in animal species – this all has nothing to do, that’s clear for everybody to see. That is despite the many possibilities that exist in zoos to do scientific research, in which one could also involve interested zoo visitors, lay men and women for that matter, as is happening today in other sciences (like astronomy, meteorology, and botany).

There is one zoo however where science is deemed important … yes, you may have guessed … Zoo Berlin! Fortunately, in the persons of dr. Nancy and dr. Katjuscha, they have two eminent scientists on the premises.

On June 5th of last year, these scientists made a tremendous discovery.

After a long search in only seldom explored areas of the polar bear resort, Nancy discovered something exceptional between the green of the foliage ‘at the edge of the world’.

Hast du so etwas schon gesehen?”, fragte Nancy.

Curious, Katjuscha came nearer. “Good that you are here, dr. Katjuscha, I think now we can use all the knowledge we have. Have you every seen anything like this?”, asked Nancy.

“Mmmm… no dr. Nancy, you seem to have discovered a most interesting thingamabob there”, answered Katjuscha. “Shall I destroy it – ehh, take it apart?”

“No, no, honoured colleague, let’s first research with utmost accuracy what’s it all about. Maybe we can find out what it’s function is”, said Nancy thoughtfully.

Both doctors thought for a long time. Whether they were zoologists or biologists, I don’t know. It must have been some years since their respective promotions, as they both are in the summer of their lives. And well, when a study is already many years behind you, doesn’t it automatically loses much of it’s relevance? What the doctors may have lost through the years on biological or zoological knowledge, they more than make up in stamina and enthousiasm for the new found thingamabob.

Here are some exclusive pictures from their field laboratory:

“Somehow this combination of twigs and feathers must mean something, dr. Katjuscha”, said Nancy. “But what?” queried Katjuscha. “It is not eatable, dr. Nancy. I just took a test bite.” “Maybe it’s for playing?”, wondered Nancy. “But why then did they hide it for us?” both doctors expressed simultaneously.

As you can see, the thingamabob was researched at length and quite extensively. Before dr. Nancy and dr. Katjuscha came to a resolution, they had a long swim. As you well know, that stimulates the Facultas Cognitationis – what with female polar bears is called the thinking skills.

As they were swimming around in the shadows of the border of the resort, Nancy had an idea. At spring, didn’t she see these little feathered animals, flying in and out the foliage? Several times she heard the regular visitors giving them a name. “Sparrows”, or something similar, she remembered. And weren’t there after some time ever more of these animals, and even smaller types? Could the thingamabob possibly be … a portable birth cave?

After lengthy discussions, during which also Tosca was consulted – after all, of the three ladies she had the most experience with a birth cave – both doctors came to a conclusion.

Dr. Nancy and dr. Katjuscha prooved, that birds seemingly had a way of reproduction that, at the lowest stage of development, showed a similarity to that of much further developed polar bears in the form of a primitive birth cave. An extraordinary discovery!

In their prize winning reseach paper they write, that even though polar bears naturally stand at the highest point of the evolutionary ladder, between them and the birds – even though they are, like all species, just soulless machines – there is a certain similarity, on a primitive level of course. Such indications were found berfore, during the last decennia, and with several different species. Only between polar bears and humans there does not seem to be any similarity at all. Probably that is just the natural way of things. Humans obviously do not belong to the more ‘cuddly’ species. No educated polar bear wonders why.

After their arduous work both learned bears took a well deserved rest and bathed themselves contentedly in the sun, in the water and on the rocks. There’s really is nothing better than science to explain the world around us.

Epilog.

Epilogue.

Which influence have humans and animals on eachother? How do we actually interact with animals? What do animals tell about people, what do people tell about animals? By looking at what animals tell us and how we treat animals, we gain more knowledge about ourselves, about animals and about the relationship between man and animal.
Animals have many qualifications that we humans can learn from. One who looks carefully, sees that animals hold up a mirror, as it were, to humans. And that is exactly what I tried to do in this little phantasy.

Frans

Juni 2011. Das Bild von Tosca ist von 1-6.12.2011. – Pictures of Nancy and Katjuscha are taken on June 5th, 2011. The picture of Tosca is from December 1-6, 2011.

My day in Zoo started just outside the Zoo on the hill. From the hill to the left you can see a yellow building and close by I have my little cottage and garden.

Then I walked to the camels. They are dressed for winter in camelwoolcoats and were enjoying the sun and snow.

The lions did not go out. So I passed the elephant from the Elephant-parade (the Zoo has two) , passed the seals in the icy water and went to the polarbears.

There was a sign on the enclosure saying, that here is only one bear out. My heart stood still, but fortunately it was “only” Boris, that has problems with walking – with his one paw. It is not broken, and he is “behind” under medical treatment. Bad enough but it could be worse. Noel – queen of ice – was enjoying the wonderful weather with snow, ice and sun. Looking like us enjoying the sun in summer.

I am happy, that she looks so good. The vet told tuesday, that she might have lost a cub in the november. There is a lot of noise from the work on the new enclosure. No peace at all in day time. I hope that they have luck later this year.

By the way. Also here in Copenhagen there are no water around the polarbear-, lion-, tiger- and brown bears enclosures in winter. Because the animals would perhaps be able to walk over the ice and jump high in the air and in to the garden.

Then I went to the brown bears. The cubs and the mother had fun in the snow.

5.2.2012 – Source: TV Jylland, Translation of the video into English and German by Inge aus Kopenhagen

Said in the video:

As newborn the polarbearcub Siku was removed from his his mother. She had no milk for him.

From that on he has been taken care and looked after by humans. So one can ask, if Siku will ever be like other polarbears or will his special “childhood” be a problem.

Sikus “father” the director of Scandinavian Animal Park in Kolind (Jylland in Denmark) says about Sikus future:

It is going well now. Siku is always hungry. He has a weight a little over 10 kilos.

The director means, that it can have harmed Siku to be raised by humans, but he also means, that it will go well, so that the director in time will be just an ordinary human being for Siku. Siku shall live with the other polarbears in the park. He shall have help for beginning a bearlife for a couple of years, so he realizes, that he is a polarbear. In time he shall be with his father and uncle. The director means, that it can be done, because the animal park has really very larges areas and enclosures.

Siku – 66 days

February 3, 2012 Toronto, Ontario: After a precarious start to life, the Toronto Zoo today introduced a very special member of the Zoo’s wildlife family, the now 3 ½ month old male polar bear cub. This energetic young cub represents a heartwarming journey of survival, one where expert Toronto Zoo Wildlife Health staff worked around the clock to save a vulnerable species. The cub has successfully surpassed many milestones in his young life and is a great ambassador for a species in need of public education and support.

“This has been an interesting and challenging case for the Zoo and a valiant and dedicated team effort of both the Wildlife Health Centre and Wildlife Care staff,” said John Tracogna, the Zoo’s Chief Executive Officer. “Ultimately, it has been a rewarding journey for everyone involved, and we are happy to introduce an active and healthy polar bear cub, our new Arctic ambassador to help share our conservation message with our visitors.”

On October 11, 2011, Aurora, one of the Zoo’s two 10-year old female polar bears, gave birth to three cubs. Tragically, the new mother rejected the cubs shortly after birth. Zoo staff quickly intervened, and rescued the two surviving cubs. Less than 24 hours later, one cub did succumb toinjuries sustained.

Polar bears are born in a very immature state and are documented as being very difficult to hand raise from the moment of birth. The newborn cub weighing only 700 grams was immediately placed into an incubator in the Intensive Care Unit of the Zoo’s Wildlife Health Centre, and monitoring ’24/7′ commenced. At birth, polar bears have a pink nose, eyelids, and feet, and their eyes and ears are tightly closed.

For the past 3 ½ months, Zoo staff has focused on care of the cub, tending to his every need.

There are few documented cases of humans rearing a cub from such an early age. Veterinary staff monitored his health closely to ensure he was receiving all of the necessary requirements to survive and grow strong. He was fed an artificial polar bear milk formula with an infant bottle, which he accepted very readily. While early on the cub did experience some close calls, he has achieved, right from the start, a strong and consistent growth weight, and now weighs approximately 17kg. Some of the major milestones that were reached since birth are:

• At two weeks, the cub’s skin color began to change and his pink nose and feet graduallychanged to black.

• At about 30 days, his eyes and ears opened, and he begun responding to his environment and the people that cared for him.

• At about 40 days, the cub began to teethe, and to the delight of his care givers, very quickly showed his ability to use them!

• At about 90 days, his walking improved with lots of exercise to strengthen his hind legs.

This increased mobility and independence allowed for his move from the Wildlife Health Centre to the polar bear house on January 26.

The cub can be seen in his new outdoor den in the Zoo’s polar bear exhibit, generously supported by Symcor. “As part of our ongoing partnership, Symcor’s Integrated Statement Services group is pleased to support the polar bear research and conservation initiatives at the Zoo,” says Michael Corbett, Director, Operations, Integrated Statement Services at Symcor. “It also helps us to instill a culture of environmental awareness and engagement among employees which is an important aspect in solving the environmental challenges that face us today and in the future.”

The male cub also needs a suitable name. Starting today and over the next six weeks, names can be submitted to the Zoo’s facebook page – facebook.com/TheTorontoZoo and on the Zoo’s website at torontozoo.com . Voting on a short-list will start mid-March and the selected name will be announced on March 31, 2012.

The Toronto Zoo is a champion for Canada’s majestic polar bears listed as a critically endangered species. The Zoo works closely with other Zoological associations and conservation institutions, including a close partnership with Polar Bears International (PBI). Zoo biologists and researchers work closely with their Wildlife biologist counterparts in the field with valuable learning andstudies that can be applied to polar bear conservation in the wild.

About Toronto Zoo:

For the polar bears the cold winter weather with snow and ice is just a big fun. In KWM we have seen photos and reports of the Golden Girls, Aika, Troll and Tonya in Berlin, Wilbär & Ewa in Orsa, Giovanna&Yoghi in Munich. Vera, Felix and the boys are also enjoying the winter fairy tale in Nuremberg.

I received current pics from our Nuremberg Reporters. The photos show the polarbears in a similar ecstasy as in other zoos.

Even Felix has left his den with uplifted spirits, it is obvious that he is enjoying the winter. Aleut & Gregor like the Franconian snow as much as the sun.

The cub is now almost two months old and mother’s milkbar keeps the hunger away. The baby is gaining weight about 100 grams a day! With a well filled belly it’s good to sleep in mom’s arms.

Producing milk is, of course, very energy consuming for Venus. Since she hadn’t been eating during the last two and a half month she became restless and started to look for food. It was time to start feeding her. The first meal consisted of 800 grams salmon. After the long fast the ‘digestion machinery’ needs a gentle awakening. Fish is easy to digest and the fat salmon contains important nourishment for the mama bear.

The cubbie is learning how to walk after the crawling period. The walking isn’t so gracious and elegant yet but it’s getting better all the time.

Now that the cub can control it’s movements better Venus can feed it while sitting.

Here are some short videos and I’m sure you will all fall in love – if you haven’t already…….

Then I passed a wonderful tree on my way to the brown bears and Noel and Boris.

One brown bear was enjoying the wonderful weather.

Noel was a sleeping beauty ….

…. and Boris was making fitness – walking.

Also the tigers enjoyed relaxing.

Next came the ant eaters. There are three – the parents and a big cub. They enjoyed eating.

On my way to the lion-family I passed the owls being trained and the camels.

And then came the big lion-family with the two lionesses Emma and Esmeralda and the male Oleg and their cubs. And they have just had food in the enclosure and were looking for it everywhere. So the whole family were seeking here, there and everywhere.

By the lion-enclosure there is a little tower and from there you can see the work on the new Polar bear enclosure.

Finally I went back to my little garden and took a picture of “my” peacock. A beauty, I think.
