At rather short notice I decided to take advantage of a break in the wet weather and head north to Doncaster by train for the day. I was lucky and both journeys were on time and comfortable.

December 2019: Tonja and Hertha playing ball

Hertha is growing so fast that her famous blue Hertha team ball is no longer big enough. Tonja loves showing Hertha what a Polar Bear is able to do. Like all children, Hertha would rather play with the toy than watch it!

December in Berlin is the time we remember Thomas Doerflein and Knut. It is hard to think that Knut would have been a mature 13 year old Polar Bear today. Presumably he and Tonja would have lived together either in the Zoo or the Tierpark.

Whenever I am in Berlin I always try to visit Katjuscha in Berlin Zoo as often as possible. I usually sit on my favourite bench and wait for Kati to wake up, which she usually does and looks out in my direction.

Mervi: The 13th of December happens to be Ralph’s birthday so I’m sure even the polar bears in Gelsenkirchen will join me when I start singing ‘Happy birthday to you’!
