17.1.2020 by Ralph Morton
There is not room here (and the German reports have covered them) to repeat all the praise that the keepers give to Tonja at the 1100 Polar Bear talks. Let us just say she is a superlative Polar Bear and Mother.

Bears in Berlin – real and remembered: December 2019

December in Berlin is the time we remember Thomas Doerflein and Knut. It is hard to think that Knut would have been a mature 13 year old Polar Bear today. Presumably he and Tonja would have lived together either in the Zoo or the Tierpark.

Whenever I am in Berlin I always try to visit Katjuscha in Berlin Zoo as often as possible. I usually sit on my favourite bench and wait for Kati to wake up, which she usually does and looks out in my direction.

Mervi: The 13th of December happens to be Ralph’s birthday so I’m sure even the polar bears in Gelsenkirchen will join me when I start singing ‘Happy birthday to you’!

ZOOM Gelsenkirchen: The Nanook Story

Dec 4th, 2019 | By | Category: Ralph's reports

4.12.2019 by Ralph Morton
It is nice to remember how far Lara and her female cub, Nanook, have come. Story boards next to their enclosure tell the story. Lara gave birth to three cubs on 4 December 2017, but only one survived.

It seems a long time ago now, but as there are so few pictures from Gelsenkirchen I thought it would be worth reporting on the four Polars Bears who live in the Alaska world at ZOOM.

10.11.2019 by Ralph Morton
Although my first visits in Zoos are always to check out the Polar Bears, I try to set aside some time to visiting other animals, especially if I know someone who can tell me something about them.

Sunday 18 August: Saying Goodbye to the Polar Bears in Copenhagen

Nov 1st, 2019 | By | Category: Ralph's reports

1.11.2019 by Ralph Morton
Last Day in Denmark. I had not expected to be able to visit Denmark again and I was delighted that the visit had gone so well. The last Sunday came all too soon.

My final day in Aalborg Zoo: Saturday 16 August

26.10.2019 by Ralph Morton
Nuka and Quillak were already playing in the water when I arrived. One of the Polar Bears’ toys is a big green ball which has survived several years of hard play by Malik and her girls.

My third day in Aalborg Zoo: Friday 16 August

18.10.2019 by Ralph Morton
After the excitement of my day at the Zoo on Thursday, Friday was a more leisurely day, for me at least. The girls were already in action in the big enclosure. Even so, like all Polar Bears they prefer to stay dry if they can.
