Between 18 and 22 September I was able to spend my mornings with Katjuscha in Berlin Zoo. She will be 36 years tomorrow (16th of November) and is the oldest Polar Bear in a European Zoo. Despite Covid 19 I had to see her again.

It seems a lifetime ago since my mad dash to France in August to visit Flocke and her three cubs. Fortunately I have lots of photos to remind me of them. I am going to share them and my other visits with you as we go through the Winter.

YWP is located in typical English green countryside. Watching Polar Bears in such a beautiful place takes on new meaning after months of Covid confinement.

The land and water features at YWP resemble closely the tundra areas of Canada or Russia where Polar Bears come on land in Summer.

I decided at short notice to visit YWP (Yorkshire Wildlife Park) near Doncaster in order to see Rasputin, as there were rumours that he will go to Estonia to carry on breeding cubs.

After lunch on Tuesday I met one of the keepers who told me that the bears would move to the lower enclosure so the two large upper ones could be cleaned. The lower enclosure is still larger than many main enclosures.

Tuesday morning found me at the glass in front of the large water tank in the upper enclosure at Marineland. My plastic bag soon attracted the attention of Raspi’s daughter Tala.

I was up bright and early on Tuesday morning. Opening the curtains I had a panaramic view of Marineland. The hotel is modern with four residential blocks. I was able to get a leisurely breakfast of coffee, rolls and croissants in the fresh air.

The British Airways Airbus descended over the countryside of Southern France. It looked very different from England. We were soon over the coast. My first glimpse of the Mediterranean.
