I love all bears, but the gentle bears from the war torn country of Syria are among my favourites. I wish more zoos would give them a home. I think Nanook must share my affection.

Ursus Maritimus is as much at home in the water as on land. Lovely Lara is no exception. / A large supply of apples ensures that Nanook has plenty to keep her occupied.

Although I missed spending time with Lara and Nanook in September, I was fortunate this time to spend two days with them. My first sight of them was at 1005 on Monday morning, after they had had their morning swim.

The first and, for me, the most important of the Polar Bears in Gelsenkirchen is the wonderful Lady Antonia. I have been visiting her since November 2006, so she is my first Polar Bear in Germany.

The water is the natural element of “Ursus Maritimus”, and Volodya enjoys himself in his large pool. The big glass panes at the Tierpark and Zoo appeal to Volodya as he enjoys seeing people react to him.

Volodya often stands near the entrance to his den, hoping to be let in. He is quite often only visible with his bottom on the floor so that he can thump the door with his paws.

Katjuscha has been my special bear in Berlin Zoo ever since 2007. She is usually to be found waiting patiently for someone to bring her food.

The keeper talk is an opportunity to see the two male Polar Bears really close up. My pictures are taken from the videos I made on my phone, so not of the best quality, but they do allow you to see how impressive, and yet how different, the two boys are.
