KWM’s Reporter Team aus Nürnberg hat an einer frühen Morgenführung im TiGa Nürnberg teilgenommen. Als ich die Fotos von Felix und anderen Tieren bekam, musste ich ganz unweigerlich an den lyrischen Song der Bee Gees denken: Morning of my Life (man kann die schöne Musik anhören, während man den  Bericht liest).

Die ganz frühen Morgenstunden in jedem Tierpark sind ein ganz wunderbares Erlebnis.
Normalerweise kennt man einen Felix, der unbedingt Kontakt mit Vera und seiner Familie aufnehmen möchte, so:

Unsere Reporter haben an diesem Tag viele Stunden im TiGa verbracht, nach der Morgenverschlafenheit wurden natürlich auch die Eisbären langsam munter

Dear Caren, realizing that your birthday came nearer and nearer, I knew that I had to write down a few words to celebrate this big event. Half a century is nothing, of course. You are now reaching the best time of your life (well at least, they say so). But even though I don’t know you for such a long time – I mean 50 years, I am grateful for every day. You brought us updates and pics of the adventures of our sweethearts Flocke and Raspi and when they had to move farther away from us, you did all you could and can to continue this tradition. You brought us news about your own hometown zoo and especially about the two fluffies who have stolen your heart there. But most importantly and most unexpectedly, about one year ago, you brought us the little Giggler and then we all fell madly in love.

Dear Caren, my birthday wish to you is rather pretty selfish, but I wish you all luck, a good and strong health and lots of free time …. to bring us more if this all (OK, a new little Giggler included, why not???? Just ask your daughter to help a bit).

Believe me, seeing the animals through your eyes and the eye of the camera is a never-ending refreshment for the heart and the soul.

Vera und ihre Jungs schliefen im Schatten während Felix unruhig seine nicht sichtbare Familie suchte. Also versuche er mit einem Sprung ins Wasser Aufmerksamkeit zu bekommen. Prompt standen die Drei  auf und sahen nach was sich beim Nachbarn tut.
Vera and the boys were sleeping in the shadow while Felix was a nervously looking for his family. That’s why he tried to draw attention with a big jump into the water. Immediately, the rest of the family got up and they wanted to see what was going on in the enclosure next door.

Mehr wollte Felix nicht, nur die Familie in Sichtweite haben und zog sich nun in den Schatten zurück.
That’s what Felix wanted, he only wanted to see his family and then he went back into the shadow.

Vera an der Scheibe konnte jetzt gar nicht verstehen, daß Felix kein Interesse mehr zeigte. Sie lockte mit einen Holz oder Stein im Maul aber umsonst. Felix döste nun im Schatten.
Vera was now at the glass and she did not understand, that Felix did not show interest. She brought a little piece of wood or a stone, but without effect. Felix was napping.

 Vera, Aleut und Gregor interessierten sich jetzt für die anstehende Fütterung.
Vera, Aleut and Gregor concentrated now on the feeding which was soon to come.

Wir haben dann auch unseren Durst in der Waldschänke gelöscht,  und als wir wieder den  Aquapark erreichten, spielte auch Vera mit der großen Kugel.
We were very thursty and went to the Waldschänke and when we returned we saw Vera playing with the big bowl.

Es wird immer schwieriger die Bären zu unterscheiden, noch hat Vera den größeren Kopf, aber ihre Söhne haben bald ihre Schulterhöhe.
It is getting more and more difficult to say who is who of the three. Vera still has the biggest head, but her shoulder is nearly on the same level with her sons.

 Die Frage der Woche an alle Eisbärenkenner  ”Wer sind wir?” Here comes a question for polar bear experts “Who are we?”

Ein paar Eindrücke der 100-Jahr-Feier des Tiergarten Nürnberg:

Monika und Uli haben am Samstag zusammen mit anderen Tiergartenfreunden ehrenamtlich den Stand der Tiergartenfreunde betreut, und sie konnte etwas Zeit abzwacken, um auch uns aktuell von dem Ereignis zu berichten:

Der Besucherandrang hielt sich in Grenzen und ich habe heute festgestellt -es gibt sie noch, die netten Kinder. Begeistert haben sie die Spiele und Rätsel mitgemacht, leider vermögen nicht sehr viele Eltern ihren Kindern Natur und Tier spielerisch nahezubringen.
The crowds were limited today and I have found out that there were some very nice children. They were enthusiastically participating in games and riddles. However, there are parents who are not capable to teach their children about nature and animals

Gleich am Eingang war Raspis Stoffbruder und der beste Empfang für diesen Tag.
At the entrance there was Raspi’s plush-brother which was the best welcome for this special day.

Ein Posaunenchor vor dem Eingang hat Vormittag zur Unterhaltung beigetragen und eine bestimmte und sogenannte Tierschutzorganisation stumm gehalten. Flockes Zieheltern hatten ihren Stand in der Waldschänke und die Resonanz war gering – aus den Augen aus dem Sinn!  :(
A brass orchestra was a big entertainment before noon and they were able to keep a certain animal welfare organisation quiet. Flocke’s Mamas and Papas had a booth in the Waldschänke, unfortunately there was only a little  resonance – out of sight, out of mind  

Im Naturkundehaus gab´s Theater für Kinder, Kaffee und Kuchen – alles von Tiergartenfreunden gebacken.
In the house of nature studies there was a theatre for children and coffee and cake was available. The homemade cake was provided by the Tiergartenfreunde.

Leider habe ich es nicht ins Raubtierhaus geschafft. Mit Tigerkuchen haben die Direktoren die 100 Jahr Feier offiziell eröffnet.
Unfortunately I did not manage to visit the house of the big cats. The directors have opened the celebration there with a special tiger cake.

Jantar ist schon hinter den Kulissen und wird auf die Reise nach Cemnitz am Montag vorbereitet. Ein Tigeer war aber schon zu sehen, wenn auch nur aus Stoff.
Jantar is already backstage and will be prepared for his journey to Chemnitz, which will take place on Monday. One plush tiger was to be seen.

There is no better way to celebrate Earth Day than to visit my little buddy Hudson and his friends at the Toronto Zoo. It seems that thousands of others had the same idea as I found the parking lots close to full. There were many tents set up to show green products and green living techniques. I’m glad that I got the membership because the lineups were quite long at the ticket booths. As I made my way to the Tundra Trek, I saw that just about all the stores, restaurants, and kids’ attractions were open. Most of the animals were back on display now that the season is warming.

I soon realized how spoiled I was during my previous visits. The crowds at the polar bear enclosure were huge. They are definitely the stars of the zoo. I believe this was the largest crowd Hudson has experienced. I managed to sneak a peak into his area. He was occasionally visible rolling around behind the hill.

Since it was feeding time, I went to the adults. What I saw can only be described as water ballet. Inukshuk was pacing back and forth in the water before diving in. He would float on his back while watching the feeding stand for signs of the keeper. Aurora would dive down, walk on the pool bottom and then swim to the surface before pushing off from the underwater viewing glass with her hind legs. Then she would float on her back with front paws bent, head tossed back with her nose pointed in the air until her momentum stopped.

Sometimes she would use an arm to push off a rock to get more distance. Then she would walk back to the feeding stand and repeat her routine over and over. Sometimes Inukshuk would float into her as she walked by. They both looked so graceful in the water. I had to watch this from underwater so I headed below. The crowd was letting out a chorus of “oohs” and “aahs” as Nikita performed her pre-lunch ritual. Photos were not turning out good down there but I managed some video. Stay tuned.

The crowds were increasing for the feeding, so I went back to see Hudson. He was laying on the hill, as if napping, but I could see a stick in his front paws. Suddeny his head swung around and pointed to the sky. Like a bolt of lightning he ran over to the fence, stood up on his hind legs and started jumping up and down. There was a bird just out of his reach. I guess he felt it was time for lunch. I was amazed that at his young age he was already stalking prey. A few times that afternoon I watched him try to sneak up on birds landing in his yard. He’s still a little too slow and clumsy but I’m sure he’ll grab an unsuspecting bird someday.

I noticed that his little den was gone and so now there were more glass panels available to see into his yard. His toys had changed since my last visit. The swinging ball was replaced by a blue jug dangling from rope. His old nemesis, the floating blue ball, was now an iceberg. A large green ball and smaller red ball were added to his collection. But he was really in no mood to play. I think the smells coming from the restaurants and the noise from large crowds were confusing him. He didn’t hear or pick up the scent of the keeper when she came to feed him. She did not come in contact with him at all. The fencing system is set up so that she can lure him into another area, close him off and then enter his yard to place his food bowl or perform other chores.

They always place his bowl in a different part of his yard, although always visible to visitors. When she leaves and releases him back to the yard he flies to his bowl. It was emptied in a flash. But that black tub of water just wasn’t in the right place so he had to move it a few inches. Then he would walk around the yard before returning to lick the bowl clean again. A few drinks of water and repositioning of the tub and then back to the bowl. If only he had a mirror to see all the yummy food stuck to his face, whiskers and nose.

Now it was time to visit some other parts of the zoo. The Arctic wolves were napping on the hill. I found the Arctic foxes resting too, so I headed to the African Penguins.

There was one baby penguin alone in the glass enclosure. All the adult penguins were out on the beach but only one was swimming. I got the feeling that they were looking around at each other to see who was next into the pool. Each penguin has a name and has a coloured tag on one wing (flipper?) so that staff knows who is who.

Next stop was the Canadian Domain. Both of the lynx were sleeping in their den. I see plenty of raccoons here in the city so I bypassed their exhibit. There wasn’t too much activity in the cougar cage. One was sleeping while the other was pacing the enclosure. I noticed that whenever a small child came near, the cougar would change his routine to get a closer look at the child. I have seen the lynx act the same way in the past. Cougars have always been one of my favourites. They are mysterious and are rarely seen in the wild. And they are difficult to photograph.

The elk were too far away to get a good photo so I continued on to the grizzlies. Samson and Shintay had just been fed fruits and veggies. The keeper was over near the cages so the bears wandered out of my view to his location. The bald eagles were next on the route. One of them was feasting on a meaty bone.

The bison were lounging at the far end of their pasture and the moose were not to be seen, except for the occasional top of a head bobbing above the crest of the hill. I went back to the grizzlies for another visit as I made my way out of that part of the zoo. Shintay was lounging while watching Sampson play in the pool with a large green ball.

Since the crowds were so large in the African section I did not get to see rhinos, lions, cheetahs, zebras or monkeys. The giraffes were at their house and the hyenas were playing hide and seek. The peacocks were calling out and displaying their feathers.

I checked my watch and noticed that time was flying so I paid a final visit to the polars. The adults were getting another feeding when I arrived. When the keeper was finished I had a chance to ask her about the bears. Inukshuk weighs a little over 450kg(1,000lbs) and the sisters are both hovering around 270kg (600lbs). Hudson is now 39kg (85lbs) and is in excellent health. She told me that they had put a catheter in Aurora’s front leg so that they could draw her blood for a syrum to add to food so that tiny Hudson got essential nutrients. They use a stick and reward system to train Hudson(and most other animals). By pointing the stick, Hudson will expose a side, front, back or rear to the keeper if they want to inspect something or give a needle. When he obeys the stick he gets a treat, either fish of a piece of meat. Since he had been fed from a syringe when he was small, it is now easy to administer medicines if needed.

Keepers no longer enter the same enclosure or have any physical contact with Hudson. He likely won’t be integrated with the three adults, at least until he is big enough to defend himself. The fact that his mother and aunt are the only females makes the breeding situation undesirable. She thinks he will end up in an American zoo or possibly in Europe but that decision is beyond her position. I thanked her for the information and told her that she and her associates have done a great job and should be proud of their accomplishment.

One last look at Hudson found him playing with an appropriate toy for Earth Day. It was a cardboard box. One minute he was trying to climb inside and the next he was wearing it as a hat. He wrestled the flaps open and managed to get half of his body inside. A few swipes with the front paws and the shiny black nose came into view. He rolled around in that box so much that it no longer resembled a cube. A couple of bites and chews later it became a mat to lay on. Now it was ready to put into the recycling bin. Hudson had done his bit for Earth Day.

Tja, und irgendwann war dann auch das gemeinsame Mahl vorbei und der Verdauungsprozess in vollem Gang.

“Setzt Dich, Anori! Ich habe mit Dir zu reden.

It’s TT. “Tacheles Time!!”

Anori setzte sich aufreizend langsam hin,

machte sich dann aber vorsichtshalber doch etwas kleiner. Nun ja, und die Zunge streckte sie trotzdem raus!

“Mais maman, aber Mama,” versuchte Anori noch zu beschwichtigen.

“Ich bin doch schon soooo groß! Behandel mich doch nicht immer wie ein Kleinkind!

Riesengroß!!!”

“Ruhe, mein Kind!! Das kannst Du gar nicht beurteilen! Und solange Du noch unter meine Tatze passt,

führe ich hier die Regie! Und Du wirst keine kleine Tingeltangelpuppe!!!”

Und sie redete und redete und redete!!!

Nach einer Stunde war sie nicht nur mit ihren Kräften am Ende, sondern auch mit ihrem Latein.

Die Verdauung hatte das komplette Blut aus ihrem Gehirn gesogen und ihr fielen die Augen zu.

Ihr Kopf wurde schwer und schwerer. Gott sei Dank lenkte Anori plötzlich ein.

“Mama, ist ja schon gut!! Ich hab Dich doch lieb!!

Ich bin doch Deine kleine Anori! Deine Kuschelmaus!!

Du hast ja recht! Ich sollte wirklich meine Kindheit genießen.

Komm, lass uns zum Pfleger gehen. Er soll mir Spielsachen herauslegen.”

Und dann zogen die beiden los.

Anori hatte so viele Sachen, mit denen sie sich die Zeit verkürzen konnte.

Da war Dustys Tau. Dusty hatte es damals von seinem letzten Taschengeld gekauft. Ausgelacht hatten sie ihn im Laden, weil er gesagt hatte, das Tau sei für einen Eisbären.

Eigentlich war es für Lars. Aber Lars hatte ganz vorsichtig damit gespielt. Er wollte unbedingt seiner ersten Tochter ein Geschenk zu ihrer Geburt machen. Sie würde bestimmt so viel Freude damit haben, wie er selber.

Und was für eine Freude sie hatte!

Noch konnte sie sich fast dahinter verstecken.

“Puh!! Anstrengend!!”

Noch ist das gelbe Tau leichter zu händeln.

Manche Sachen sind ausgesprochen lecker, so wie dieser Sack von Tante Uli!

Aber man kann sie noch so in Sicherheit bringen…

irgendwann gehen sie dann doch kaputt! So nach ca 1 Stunde! Gut, wenn man die Qual der Wahl hat! Manchmal sind es die einfachsten Dinge des Lebens, die total viel Laune machen.

“Freunde, die hier gerade lest, ich muss wirklich sagen, wir Eisbären spielen für unser Leben gern!! Sie haben mir erzählt, dass ich irgendwann auf die große Anlage komme. Mit Mama natürlich. Im Wechsel mit Papa. Und da erwartet mich dann typisches Eisbärenspielzeug.

Was das wohl sein mag!?

Bis dahin werde ich keine Langeweile haben!!

Die Sache mit dem Salat werde ich heimlich üben. Vielleicht kann ich ja dann auch auf die Vagantenbühne in Berlin. Die ist ganz in der Nähe vom Zoologischen Garten Und dann könnte ich ja mal schauen,
wo mein berühmter Halbbruder Knut gelebt hat.

Am 28. April 2011 gab es in Berlin in der Vagantenbühne die Komödie von Volker Kühn “Da ham wir den Salat”

Fast auf den Tag genau ein Jahr später, am 14. April 2012, gab es ein Remake im Wuppertaler Zoo.

Die schauspielerisch noch etwas unerfahrene Eisbärin Anori gab ihr Debüt zu eben diesem, darstellerisch nicht ganz einfachen Thema, unter den Augen ihres Tierpflegers Claus Kühn.

Mutter Vilma zitierte ihre Tochterumgehend zu sich.

Anori ahnte direkt,

dass sie mit der eben gebotenen Leistung bestimmt nicht in den Recall käme und Mama von daher nicht ganz zufrieden war, machte sich aber

lieber direkt auf den Weg.

Nun ja… Anori wäre nicht Anori, wenn es der kürzest mögliche Weg gewesen wäre.

Ein kleiner Umweg könnte ja nicht schaden.

Den Bogen überspannen wollte sie aber lieber nicht. Also näherte sie sich ihrer Mama.

Mama Vilma hat ein massives Problem mit den schauspielerischen Ambitionen von Anori. Sie will auf gar keinen Fall ein frühreifes Früchtchen heranziehen, eventuell sogar einen Kinderstar!

Also musste sie erzieherisch tätig werden.

Sie wollte gerade so richtig loslegen,

als der “Gehegeservice” vorbeikam.

Eigentlich lebte sie ja eher nach der abgewandelten lateinischen Devise: Plenus venter non educat libenter aber etwas Hunger verspürte sie auch.

Sie selbst bevorzugte vor dem eigentlichen Mahl eine Amuse Gueule

Vor’m großen Fraß,

nahm auch der Lars

‘nen Gaumenspaß

Schließlich ist man wer und man kennt die Menufolge.

Hüstel.

Anori sieht das generell komplett anders. Sie kann überhaupt nicht verstehen, warum ein Amusement der Kehle erforderlich sein soll.

Sie lebt nach dem Motto: “Wat isch han, dat han isch!!!”

Da könnt Ihr Köppe gucken, wie Ihr wollt!

Die Mahlzeit wurde dann doch in friedlicher Atmosphäre eingenommen.

Der Frühling ist für mich die schönste Zeit des Jahres. Die Tage werden länger, die Luften erscheinen mir blauer und die Wolken weisser. Der Sonnenschein wird kräftiger und kräftiger. Pflanzen, Sträucher und Bäume schlagen aus, die ersten Frühlingsblumen blühen. Auch in der Tierwelt erwacht neues Leben.

For me, Spring is the nicest time of the year. The days grow longer, the sky seems bluer and the clouds whiter, the sun shines more and more powerful. Plants, bushes, and trees come into bud; the first spring flowers appear. In the animal world too new life dawns.

Selbstverständlich ist alles neue Leben wertvoll. Das gilt für mich aber noch ein klein wenig mehr für eine Tierart der mir “seit Knut” an’s Herz gewachsen ist: natürlich dem Eisbär. In Zoos rundum meinem Wohnort sind in das vergangene Winter nicht weniger wie fünf Eisbärkinder geboren. Drei davon überlebten: Zwei in Ouwehands Tierpark in Rhenen, Niederlande; eins in dem Zoologischer Garten von Wuppertal, im Bergischen Land.

It goes without saying that every new life is valuable. But for me there is one animal species, one that has grown to me ‘since Knut’, that is even more valuable than others: of course, the polar bear. Within three hours travel by train from my house, this past winter no less than five polar bear children were born. Three of them survived: two in Ouwehands Animal Park in Rhenen, Holland; one in the Zoological Gardens of Wuppertal, Germany.

Die Eisbärkinder in Rhenen habe ich schon mehrmals besucht. Es ist schön zu sehen wie die bis jetzt noch namenlose Eisbärchen ihre Welt entdecken und ebenso schön ist es zu sehen, wie Mutter Huggies sich über ihre Kinder freut und wie fürsorglich sie damit umgeht. Sie strahlt richtig! Huggies ist aber auch eine sehr erfahrene Mutter, die schon acht Kinder auf die Welt gebracht und aufgezogen hat.

I visited the polar bear kids in Rhenen several times already. It is wonderful to see how the until now still nameless little polar bears discover their world and it’s just as wonderful to see how mother Huggies rejoices about her children and how good and how much she cares for them. She really beams! Huggies is a very experienced mother, who has already given birth to and raised eight children.

Das Eisbärmädchen in Wuppertal hat schon einen Namen: Anori, “Kind des Windes”, so genannt weil es an dem Tag als die kleine Eisbärin geboren wurde, draussen sehr stürmisch war. Es ist das zweite Mal, das Vilma Mutter geworden ist. Dieses Mal mit hilfe von ihrem Gefährten Lars, dem Vater von Knut. Das macht also Anori im genealogischen Sinne zur Halbschwester von dem berühmten (aber vor alles geliebte) Eisbär aus Berlin.

The little polar bear girl in Wuppertal already has a name: Anori,’Child of the Wind’. She received this name because the day on which she was born was a very stormy day in Wuppertal. It is the second time that Vilma becomes a mother. This time with help from her partner Lars, the father of Knut. That makes Anori in a genealogical sense the half sister of the famous (but, most of all, loved) polar bear from Berlin.

Am Wochenende, dem 14ten April war es so weit: ein Besuch bei Anori und Familie war angesagt. In Gegensatz zu Ouwehands Tierpark ist das Eisbärengehege im Zoo Wuppertal klein. Einen Vorteil hat das aber doch: Während die Eisbärkinder in Rhenen oft 100 Meter entfernt spielen, unter den wachsamen Augen von Mutter Huggies, ist es in Wuppertal möglich Anori und Mutter Vilma ganz, ganz nah zu sehen – nur mit einer Glasscheibe zwischen Besucher und Tier.

In the weekend of April 14th it came to pass: a visit to Anori and family. Contrary to Ouwehands Animal Park, the polar bear resort in Wuppertal is small. However, this does offer one advantage: While the polar bear kids in Rhenen often play at a distance of 100 meter from the visitors under the watchful eye of mother Huggies, in Wuppertal it is possible to get really, really close to Anori and mother Vilma – with only the glass panel between visitor and animal.

Ob das Herankommen von Besuchern auch von den Tieren als Vorteil gesehen werd, ist natürlich fraglich … Glücklicherweise können sie sich aber immer selbst entscheiden, ob sie in der Mutter-Kind-Anlage verbleiben oder in’s Innengehege gehen wollen.

Whether the animals see this nearness of visitors as an advantage as well, remains to be seen … Fortunately they can decide for themselves if they want to stay in the mother-child resort in the open air or in their interior resort.

Genau wie in Rhenen ist es in Wuppertal faszinierend zu erleben wie Anori ihre Welt entdeckt und wie zärtlich Mutter Vilma mit Anori, dem ersten überlebenden Kind, umgeht.

Just like in Rhenen, it is fascinating to see how Anori discovers her world and how careful and lovingly mother Vilma treats her first surviving child.

Genauso interessant war aber der Unterschied mit den Bären im Ouwehands Tierpark. In Rhenen toben zwei Kinder mit ungefähr gleichen Kräfte und einem gleichen Entwicklungsstadium miteinander. Obwohl es zwischen den Beiden und Huggies sehr viel Kontakt gibt, sieht es anders aus wie bei Vilma und Anori, wo kein Dritter im Spiel ist. Das Kontakt ist öfter und intensiver, so scheint mir. Gut denkbar: Vilma hat eine Doppelrolle; sie ist Mutter únd sie ist Spielgefährtin.

Just as interesting as the similarities are the differences with the polar bears in Ouwehands Animal Park. In Rhenen two children are romping about that are of the same strenghth and in a similar development stage. Although there is a lot of contact between the two and with Huggies, you get a different feel with Vilma and Anori, where no third party is in play. In Wuppertal the contact between the two seems more and more intensive. It could well be: Vilma has a double role; she is mother ánd playmate.

Der Kontakt hat übrigens unterschiedliche Formen. Oft hört man ein leises Brummen; Mutter und Kinder gucken einander an – mit welchen Augen! Mit ihren grossen Tatzen weiss der Mutter streitende Bärchen von einander zu trennen und ist sie behilflich, wenn grosse Felsen oder glatte Baumstämme noch einen Schritt zu hoch sind. Erziehendes Stubsen ist auch in das Aufzucht-Programm inbegriffen. Mit ihrer zarten Nase wird gekuschelt und beruhigt. Auch die einfache Anwesentheit und andauernde Aufmerksamkeit der Mutters ist eine Form von Kontakt, der für die Bärenkinder unverzichtbar ist. Alles wird beobachtet, nicht nur von Mutter zu Kind aber auch von Kind zu Mutter: Auch bei der Bären-Erziehung ist es so, das sie mit gutem Beispiel vorangeht.

The contact itself takes several forms. You hear a soft grumble; mother and children look at each other – and with what eyes! With her big paws the mother separates the battling little ones and she helps when big rocks and slippery tree trunks are still a step too far. Educating claps are part of the rearing programme as well. With her soft nose she caresses and relaxes. Just being there and the continuous attention of the mother are just as important forms of contact the little bears cannot do without. Everything is observed, not just by the mother, but also by the children: with polar bears too the saying goes, that they lead by example.

Bis meiner Besuch im Zoo Wuppertal habe ich das immer so gesehen. Aber so nah an Vilma und Anori bemerkte ich noch eine andere Weise von Kontakt – ein der vielleicht wohl ein der wichtigsten Formen bei Eisbären ist: der Mund. Oder weniger höfflich: das Maul, wenn ihr wollt.

Until my visit to Zoo Wuppertal I have always envisioned this subject as described above. But, being so close to Vilma and Anori I noticed another way of contact – one which may well be one of the more important ones for polar bears: the contact by the mouth. Ore, less polite, the jaws, if you wish.

Ich kann jetzt viele Worte benutzen um das zu erklären. Doch ich möchte lieber, dass ihr einfach mit mir mitguckt. Mal sehen ob ihr euch meiner Meinung anschliessen könnt.

I can use many words to describe what I mean. But I’d rather want you to simply look along with me. Let’t see if you can join my opinions.

Seht ihr das? Wie ein Eisbär mit dem Mund nicht nur essen, sprechen und küssen, aber auch streicheln, liebkosen, geniessen, beruhigen, schmusen, unterstützen, zufrieden stellen, begnügen, loben, trösten, ermutigen, führen und selbst bestrafen, warnen und zurechtweisen kann? Was für eine Ausdruckskraft und Expressivität! Dazu können wir uns gar keine Vorstellung machen von der extra Dimension, die das ultra-gute Geruch dazu geben soll. Da bekommt meiner Meinung nach der Begriff “reden ohne Worte” eine viel grossere Bedeutung, als ich je gedacht habe.

Did you see that? How a polar bear with his mouth not only eats, speaks and kisses, but also caresses, cuddles, enjoys, calms, supports, satisfies, praises, leads, comforts, encourages, and even warns, punishes, and rebukes? What power of expression! Moreover, we can not even imagine the extra dimension the ultra-good smelling of the bears brings along. Through this observation, the term ‘speaking without words’ gets a significance which is much bigger than I ever thought possible.

Wie natürlich macht Vilma das alles bei Anori! Ich müsste zurückdenken an Thomas Dörflein und Knut, auch weil ich den Teil von Knuts Erziehungs-Geschichte nicht persönlich erlebt habe und es nur aus zweiter Hand kenne. Ich glaube,Thomas Dörflein fehlte “der Mund eines Eisbären”. Wie schwierig muss es für ihn gewesen sein, Knut auf “eisbärengerechte” Weise auf zu ziehen, weil ihm nur sein – in diesem Kontext armselige – menschliche Körper zu Verfügung stand. Wie lange brauchte Knut um zu merken, dass er ein Eisbär war und kein Mensch. Die Körpersprache, vor allem die Körpersprache mit dem Mund, fehlte. Auch Knut fehlte “der Mund eines Eisbären”… Nur wenn er sich die “Sprache des Mundes” eigen machte, konnte er Giannas Gesten verstehen und sie richtig deuten, so dass eine grosse Zuneigung zwischen den Beiden entstehen konnte.

How natural Vilma does all this with Anori! I just had to think back to Thomas Dörflein and Knut, even though I did not personally witnessed this part of Knut’s rearing history and only know of it from second hand sources. I believe, Thomas Dörflein ‘lacked the mouth of a polar bear’. How difficult it must have been for him to raise Knut in a way that does justice to the ways of the polar bear, with only his – in this context pathetic – human body. How long did it take Knut to learn he was a polar bear and not a human being. The body language, and most of all the body language of the mouth, lacked. Knut, too, ‘lacked the mouth of a polar bear’. It was only after he mastered this ‘language of the mouth’ that he could begin to understand Gianna’s gestures, which eventually marked the beginning of a wonderful and affectionate relationship between the two.

Das ist keine Kritik an Thomas Dörflein. Im Gegenteil: Es erstaunt mich immer mehr, was er mit völlig unzureichenden Mitteln bei Knut erreicht hat.

The foregoing is not meant as critisism towards Thomas Dörflein. On the contrary: It amazes me more and more what he has achieved with Knut with totally inadequate resources.

Der Schriftsteller und Filmemacher Michael Miersch schrieb in sein Nachruf *) für Thomas Dörflein:
“Je häufiger man Thomas Dörflein im Jahr 2007 sah, desto mehr wuchs der Respekt vor ihm. Ein Mensch, der unverhofft berühmt wurde, jedoch keine wohlfeilen Sprüche klopfte und sich nicht vor Kameras prostituierte. War es diese Wortkargheit, die ihn so sympathisch machte? Dörfleins Wirkung beruhte nicht auf effekthascherischem Schweigen. Das Besondere lag in der Weigerung, die ihm zugedachte Rolle anzunehmen. Dörflein machte nicht auf “Bärenflüsterer” oder “Klimabotschafter”, sondern blieb Tierpfleger.”

Writer and cineast Michael Miersch wrote in his eulogy*) for Thomas Dörflein: “The more one saw Thomas Dörflein during the year 2007, the more the respect for him grew. A man, famous against his wishes, with no aspirations whatsoever to promote himself with words or in front of camera’s. Was it this taciturnity that made him so sympathetic? Dörflein’s image was not based on a studied silence. Special about him was his refusal to accept the role intended for him. Dörflein did not wish to become a ‘bear whisperer’ or ‘climate ambassador’; he remained a zookeeper.”

Um als Mensch eine Brücke zu einem Eisbären zu bauen, welches Thomas Dörflein bestimmt gelungen ist, muss man aber ein aussergewöhnlich guter Kommunikator sein.

For a human being to build a connection to a polar bear, something in which Thomas Dörflein no doubt succeeded, one must be an extraordinary good communicator.

“Kann der blöde alte Rentner in der blauen Jacke nun endlich weiter laufen!?” brüllte man zu mir am Gehege. Inzwischen kamen mir in der Hektik der Menschenmassen am Wuppertaler Eisbärengehege die oben beschriebenen Gedanken in den Sinn.

“Why doesn’t the bloody old pensioner in the blue coat move on!?” shouted someone to me while I was watching Vilma and Anori. In the mean time, the above thoughts occurred to me, amidst the hectic crowds at the Wuppertal polar bear resort.

Wir sind am Samstag schon um 4:30 aufgestanden. Kurz nach 9 Uhr waren wir im Zoo Wuppertal. Wir sind schnell zu den Eisbären gelaufen. Auf dem Weg wünschten wir “Guten Morgen!” zu den Seelöwen.

On Saturday we got up at 4:30 am. We arrived at zoo Wuppertal short after 9 am and went straight to the polar bears. On our way we wished „Good morning!“ to the see lions.

Papa Lars war auch munter und wunderte sich warum so viele Leute an ihm vorbei rennen. Wir begrüßten ihn auch.

The Father Lars was alert and he was wondering, why many people run along his enclosure. We greeted him too.

Bei Anori und Vilma waren schon viele Besucher da. Die Meisten kannten wir. UliS hat für uns alle sehr schöne Namensschilder gemacht.

  At Anori’s and Vilma’s enclosure were many people. We knew the most of them. UliS made very nice labels for us all.

Anori ist ein Wirbelwind. Sie spielte und rannte durch das Gehege. Ich glaube die viele Leute vor der Scheibe störten sie nicht. Vilma war unruhig und lief hin und her.

Am Abend haben wir uns in der Gaststätte “Zum Kuhstall” getroffen. Es war ein sehr schöner Abend mit mehr als 30 Freunden.

Gitta hat sehr schöne Bärchen für die Aktion zu Gunsten der  Bären gespendet. Mein Bärchen hat einen gemütlichen Platz gefunden.

In the evening we met in the restaurant „Zum Kuhstall“. It was a very nice evening with more as 30 friends.

Gitta donated very nice bears for the action for the benefit of the bears in the zoo. My bear found a nice place.

Vielleicht erinneren einige Leser sich noch die Geschichte von Epke, das Orang Utan Kind?

Maybe some readers remember the story of Epke, the Orang Utan child?

Vor drei Wochen besuchte ich wieder das Ouwehands Tierpark in Rhenen, wo der Epke wohnt. Er ist schon gross gewachsen und es geht ihm offensichtlich gut!

Three weeks ago I again paid a visit to Ouwehands Animal Park in Rhenen, where Epke lives. He has grown into a big boy and is obviously doing well!

Für die Gelegentheit hat er ein schönes grünen T-Shirt angezogen. Wie gelenkig ein Orang Kind sich kleiden kann!

For the occasion he donned himself with a nice green T-shirt. How lithe an Orang child can dress himself!

Ins Gehege war einen grossen schwarzen Ball. Das passte dabei ins T-Shirt, und warum auch nicht. / In the resort was a big black ball. That also fitted into the T-shirt, and why not.

Es war schon toll an zu sehen, was Epke so mit seiner Kleidung und Ball veranstaltete. Aber das war noch nicht alles. Wer denkt, das Tiere nicht sehr aufmerksam ihre Umgebung betrachten, auch die an die andere Seite des Glasscheibe, wird enttäuscht werden. Sehe mal was jetzt passiert … / It was great to see all the things Epke did with his clothes and ball. But that wasn’t everything. People who think that animals are not very observant of their surroundings on the other side of the glass panel, are to be dissapointed.

Ein Hund am Gehege! / A dog at the resort!

Zuerst weisst Epke nicht genau was zu tun. Erst mal überlegen mit Mutti … / At first, Epke is indecisive. Before taking any further actions, he starts a consultation with mum.

Und dann geht’s los! Wir Orangs mógen keine Hunde am Gehege! / And then it starts! We orangs do nót like dogs at our resort!

Das Karton im Gehege wird von Spielzeug zu Waffen. / The cardboard in the resort turns from toy into weapon.

Seh mal! / See here!

Der Hund ist beeindrückt. Er bellt, aber drückt sich zugleich ängstig gegen die Beinen seiner Chef. / The dog is impressed. He bellows, but at the same time he presses himself fearfully against the legs of his boss.

Epke inzwischen droht weiter mit seine Kartons … / In the mean time, Epke threatens again and again with his cardboard …

Wenn er denn auch noch droht das Karton zu der Hund zu schmeissen … / When on top of everything he threatens to throw the cardboard at the dog …

… geht der Hund auf der Flucht, gefolgt von seiner (lachende) Chef, der das Tier, wenn einmal aus das Sicht von Epke und Epke aus das Sicht der Hund, schnell beruhigt. / … the dog flies, followed by his (laughing) boss who quickly calms the animal when he’s out of Epke’s sight, and Epke is out of the sight of the dog.

Enden wir mit ein Bild von einen ganz zufriedene Epke, der haarige Sieger! / We end with a picture of a contented Epke, the hairy winner!

It was a sunny April morning when the Golden Girls suddenly remembered Easter was getting closer and closer. What are the polar bears supposed to do? Of course, they must clean and decorate the enclosure ….. and maybe they would even paint some eggs with bright colours. So much to do, so much to do …. and there was a very special problem, too!

Es war an einem sonnigen Morgen im April, als den Golden Girls plötzlich in den Sinn kam, dass Oster immer näherkam. Was erwartet man da von Eisbären? Natürlich müssen sie ihr Gehege säubern und ausschmücken……und vielleicht wollen sie sogar ein paar Eier mit bunten Farben anmalen. Es gibt also ganz viel zu tun …. und es gibt auch ein ganz besonderes Problem!

Everybody was talking about the Easter and they even got some surprises by the feeding…..

Jeder sprach nur noch von Ostern und sie bekamen sogar bei der Fütterung Überraschendes….

Jezt sind alle Blumen und der ganze Schmuck dort, wo wir sie hin haben wollten….. oh je, was ist denn das? Was ist denn mit dem Ei passiert?  Ist das icht ein süßer kliener Bär, obwohl er so ganz anders ausschaut als jeder Bär, den ich kenne…..

Almost everything’s under controll now but we have one BIG problem. The keepers told us it’s time to throw away our Christmas trees….

Wir haben ja fast alles unter Kontrolle, aber jetzt haben wir wirklich ein GROSSES Problem. Die Keeper haben gemeint, es sei an der Zeit, die Weihnachtsbäume wegzuwerfen…..

No way - the trees are still so green and beautiful!

Ich träum gerade so schön – Ich sehe einen fluffigen Enge. Er redet mit mir….

I had a very nice dream. A bear angel appeared and he had a perfect solution to our problems! Come and I’ll whisper it in your ear …..

Ich hatte einen sehr schönen Traum. Mir erschien ein Bärenengel und er hatte tatsächlich die bärfekte Lösung für unsere Probleme! Kommt her, und ich werd sie dir ins Ohr flüstern…..

Can you imagine – I had exactly the same dream! What a brilliant idea the fluffy angel had. Why didn’t we think of that ourselves?

Kannst du dir das vorstellen – Ich hatte genau den gleichen Traum! Was für eine großartige Idee, mir der der fluffige Engel da ankam. Warum sind wir nicht selbst daraufgekommen?

Who said we can’t have an Easter tree? We just decorated our trees with some coloured eggs and they look wonderful!

Dear friends, don’t throw away your Christmas trees. You can just change the decorations and simsalabim – you have a nice Easter tree!
