Now that the Siberian cold had reached almost the whole Europe it’s inevitable that my thoughts go to our polar bear friends – especially to a certain magic bear that no longer is physically with us. However, we all have so many wonderful memories of him that we still can feel his presence very stongly.

Whenever I see a snow flake I think of Knuti, whenever I see ice flowers in the windows I think of how much our bear angel would have loved them…….

Let’s take a walk on a snowy, icy memory lane. Let’s smile through tears….

How I miss this sight….. My greatest dream was to see Knuti by the glass panel and ‘hold’ his paw. That dream never came true but I’m happy and grateful that so many of my dreams did!

We will never see Knuti behind the glass panel in Zoo Berlin again but for me little Anori in Wuppertal is at least a little consolation. Through Lars and Knuti’s half sister there’s still a connection to him.

Während meiner letzte Besuch zu Berlin hat ich das Vergnügen einige Malen den Kulinarische Ereignissen mit zu erleben, der jeder Tag am Eisbärengehege im Zoo Berlin stattfinden. Brunch Zeit um 10.30 ist Zweifellos das Hohepunkt des Tages für Tosca, Nancy und Katjuscha. Nicht das es so viel andere Hohepunkte gibt mit der Mangel an Beschäftigung für Eisbärinnen im Zoo Berlin …

Ich habe einige Momenten von das grosse Geniessen von den Tiere während das Verspeisen ihrer Mahlzeit und wollte diese gern mit euch teilen. Ich denke, den Bilder brauchen kein weiteres Kommentar.

During my latest visit to Berlin I had the pleasure to watch several of the culinary events that take place every day at the polar bear resort in Zoo Berlin. Brunch time at 10.30 is no doubt the highlight of the day for Tosca, Nancy and Katjuscha. Not that there are many other highlights with the lack of enrichment for polar bears at Zoo Berlin …

I captured some of the moments of joy the animals experienced while savouring their meal and would like to share them with you. I think the images speak for themselves.

Since many of you – just like me - haven’t seen a single snow flake this Winter I thought you would like to see more of Wilbär in the snow. He will also share his best beauty secrets with us! Bear hugs to you all from Mervi

Hello again! We are really lucky here in Orsa having so much snow! Everything’s so white and beautiful.

Of course, I’m the whitest and the most beautiful (this is strictly between you and me, I don’t want Ewa to see this!)

Sometimes I just lie here and admire the landscape. I’d like to take some photos but I have no camera…. maybe my keepers think I couldn’t use it but as you know there are special cameras for polar bears – POLARoid cameras! Oh well, Anders always takes decent photos so I’m not complaining.

Time for my daily yoga and aerobics! It’s very important to do the stretching properly. By the way – I’m sending my best regards to Mr Troll in Berlin.

Rolling in the snow is not only relaxing – it keeps my fur white, fluffy and shiny! I’m sure it would do good for your fur, too – hmmm, or whatever you call that skin of yours…..

You must admit my paws are very cute but also very impressive.

Is it the snow that’s tickling my cheek? Must do some scrubbing…..

I know you would like to look as gorgeous as I do so I’ll show you how to make my speciality – a super moisturizing rejuvenating  ultra effective snow mask!

I just remembered how we looked in July after rolling in blueberries, hahaa….. we looked like blue striped zebras…. the keepers thought there was a new species…..

But now it’s Winter and time to put on the special beauty mask!

Anders is working on a book Big Bears in the World for which he’s been photographing in Alaska, Kodiak, Arctis and, of course, in the woods around Orsa. It will probaby take about a year until the book is ready to be published. I’ll keep you informed!

How do two lovely polar bears living in a Winter paradise spend their days? I asked Herr Wilbär and he kindly agreed to tell us and he also allowed Anders to take some beautiful photos of him and Ewa. Wilbärle, the stage is yours!

Strolling around in the snow is great fun and I can do that for hours just like my relatives do in the wilderness …. but every now and then I want to have company…..

EEEEEWAAAAA!!!!! Where are you? We’re not playing hide and seek – are we? No, we only play that with the keepers. I love to see them looking for us when we’re hiding in the snow. Sometimes they believe we’ve escaped! We love to see the looks on their faces.

Oh, there you are! What would you like to do? Wrestle? Dance? Catch me if you can?

Ewa is a very skilful wrestler because she had such excellent training with her brothers.

- Hihihi…. hahahaa…. you’re tickling me!

I wonder if Ewa has been exchanging emails with Mama Corinna since she always wants to lick my ear! I don’t want my cute ears look like Papa Antons. Of course, I wouldn’t dream of saying this aloud – you all know that Mama Corinna is a hot tempered lady – to put it mildly. She also has a very good hearing…..

Well, dear friends, now you know how we spend our days. Of course, we also eat but sometimes we almost forget the food when we’re fooling around. Maybe one day I can show you how we make somersaults and build labyrinths in the snow….

Since it’s been quite a while I had a chat with our fluffy bear angel boy I decided to do as I’ve done before. I bought a big bag filled with croissants and made a cup of cappuccino. After having laid the table I closed my eyes – and it worked! All of a sudden I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder and when I opened my eyes – there he was!

BA: Hello there! it’s me – your guardian angel! Please, wipe off your tears and we’ll have a little chat…

M: Oh, how lovely to meet you again. Where have you been? What have you been up to lately?

BA: I’m always around even if you can’t see me but I must say I’ve been very busy during my time as a guardian angel!

M: Could you tell me more about your busy days?

BA: Well, it all started immediately after I left Berlin. When I saw all my friends crying and feeling sad I knew something had to be done. Then a miracle happened! I met a little polar bear girl alone in an oil field in Alaska. The cub was alone, she was hungry and, of course, also frightened…. I comforted her and told her to wait a little. I hurried to some people to inform of what I had found and told them go and rescue the poor girl.

Luckily I met some very nice persons from the Alaska zoo who took care of Lumikki (I know you called her so before she was officially called Qannik). She has now grown to a very nice polar girl and was moved to the Louisville zoo in Kentucky where loving keepers are doing everything to make her feel good. … and she has already a boyfriend! Oh yes, she has although they haven’t been properly introduced to each other yet. His name is Siku and I hope from the bottom of my heart they’ll be very happy together.

Naturally I’ve spent a lot of time with her because a growing polar bear needs suitable guidance. I think – if I may say so myself – I was a good teacher. As far as I know Qannik has charmed everybody!  Although – between you and me – sometimes she was a bit too much for me. Where do these polar girls get their incredible energy? I tried to tell her that a nickerchen every now and then is necessary but did she listen to me? Oh no, she just had to keep on running and jumping and fooling around. She reminded me of a lady bear that now lives in Munich…. my best greetings to Signorina Giovanna!

Qannik really is a wonderful bearsonality. I told her always to be just herself and never do anything on commando…. and she certainly did learn that part of being a polar bear in a zoo. Her ‘parole’ is ‘Baby bear don’t care’. Who do you think taught her that, hihihiii…..?

When I was sure Qannik will be doing just fine I visited a lot of cubs both in the zoos and in the wilderness. I’ve been trying to do my best but sometimes even a guardian angel fails to save them all…. it’s really sad… However, I’m really happy about every cub that has made it! I’m also happy knowing what comfort Qannik has been to you all during the last year.

Now I must tell you about a very special cub that was born in Denmark. His mother couldn’t take care of him so he’s being hand raised – just like I was! A loving keeper like my daddy can teach a lot to a baby bear but I thought my experience might come handy to the little one so I’ve been with him most of the time lately. The cub is called Siku, too. Oh my, sometimes I really have to think hard not to mix up the three Sikus….. as you know, there’s one in Rhenen as well!

There are things a bear should know. For instance – waving a paw in a beary elegant way might give you an extra croissant or a salmon. It’s very important to look cute and one has to be careful not to show the finger, I mean the claw, hihiii…. Sticking out your tongue in the cutest possible way might make the keepers bring you new toys….. It worked with my daddy anyway, he couldn’t resist my demands but brought me new things. I loved his old pants….. and the yellow bucket he ‘accidentally’ dropped in the moat. How we laughed at the ‘accident’…..

Since all the polar cubs are so sweet they are ‘allowed’ even pinch things – just like I pinched Uncle Ronnie’s sandwich. Do you remember that? I still remember the look on his face when he thought he had forgotten to take it with him while I was sitting behind his back enjoying the yammy thing. Enough of memories ….. Since Siku lives in Denmark and his keeper probably loves the strong Danish cheese I have adviced him to be very careful with what kind of ‘smörrebröd’ he pinches. There are limits even for a polar bear!! Danish cheese is definitely beyond the limits!!

I’ve also told him that lettuce is for sissies – not for polar bears. Of course, Siku is still very young, just a baby, but I’m very curious to see how much I’ve managed to teach him …. and the lessons will naturally continue!

I’m also very happy about the first polar bear cub ever born in Finland! Since the baby’s mother is taking care of it I only visit Ranua occasionally – just to make sure things are going as I hope.

One thing I’m very happy about is that there are so many wonderful zoos and animal parks for the newborn cubbies. Sometimes I wish I could have lived in one of those…. maybe then I would have stayed longer with you…. although when Daddy offered me this job I just couldn’t resist. As you have noticed there’s so much to do for a guardian angel. I have told you about two cubs but there are so many more cubbies in the wilderness needing my help and assistance. For them it’s not a matter of bigger enclosures and enrichment but of survival! Oh yes, my job is demanding but also very rewarding…

Finally I want to thank all my friends for their efforts to improve the living conditions for the animals in the zoos. On behalf of all polar bears and even other animals I want to tell you that it’s very much appreciated.

Oh dear, I hear a cub crying…. I must fly now! I wish all my friends a good year. Take care of yourselves and your fourlegged friends! And remember – I’m always around…..

BA: Ich bin immer bei dir, auch wenn du mich nicht sehen kannst, aber ich muss schon sagen, dass ich in letzter Zeit als Schutzengel ganz schön viel zu tun gehabt habe

M Könntest du mir von deinen arbeitsreichen Tagen erzählen?

BA: Also gut, es fing alles an, nachdem ich Berlin verlassen hatte. Als ich meine ganzen Freunde weinen und trauern sah, wusste ich, dass dagegen etwas getan werden musste. Dann ist ein Wunder geschehen! Ich traf auf einem Ölfeld in Alaska ein kleines Eisbärmädchen. Die Kleine war allein ganz allein, sie war hungrig und natürlich hatte sie auch eine Riesenangst… Ich tröstete sie und sagte ihr, sie solle ein bisschen warten. Ich beeilte ich, um ein paar Leute über meinen Fund zu informieren und forderte sie auf, das arme Mädchen zu retten.

Glücklicherweise traf ich ein paar nette Leute aus dem Alaska Zoo, die sich um Lumikki kümmerten – ich weiß, so hast du sie genannt, ehe sie offiziell auf Qannik getauft wurde. Sie jetzt ein schönes Eisbärmädchen geworden und nach Kentucky in den Louisville Zoo umgezogen, wo liebevolle Pfleger alles Bärenmögliche machen, damit sie sich wohlfühlt …. und sie hat sogar schon einen Freund! Oh ja, das stimmt wirklich, obwohl sie sich noch nicht richtig vorgestellt wurden. Er heißt Siku und ich wünsche mir aus tiefstem Herzen, dass sie miteinander glücklich werden.

Natürlich habe ich mit ihr viel Zeit verbracht, weil ein heranwachsender Eisbär richtige Anleitungen braucht und ich glaube – falls ich das so sagen darf- ich bin ein guter Lehrer. Soweit ich weiß, hat Qannik jeden verzaubert. Obwohl – und jetzt mal ganz unter uns – manchmal war es mir schon etwas zuviel. Wo nehmen diese Eisbärmädchen nur ihre unglaubliche Energie her? Ich versuchte ihr klarzumachen, dass ab und zu ein Nickerchen nötig sei – aber hat sie etwa auf mich gehört? Oh nein, sie rannte, sprang und tobte ganz einfach weiter. Sie erinnerte mich an eine Bärendame, die jetzt in München lebt…..meine herzlichsten Grüße an Signorina Giovanna!

Quanik ist eine wunderbäre Bärsonlichkeit. Ich habe ihr nur gesagt, dass sie ganz einfach sie selbst bleiben und nie etwas auf Kommando tun soll…..und sie hat diesen Aspekt des Eisbärlebens in einem Zoo gewiss schnell gelernt. Ihr Motto ist ‚baby bear don’t care‘ (ein Eisbärbaby macht sich nichts draus) Von wem glaubst du, hat sie das wohl, hihihiii….?

Als ich mir sicher war, dass es Qannik gutgeht, besuchte ich noch viele andere Eisbärbabys in den Zoos und in der Wildnis. Ich hab mein Bestes versucht, aber manchmal scheitert auch ein Schutzengel daran, alle zu retten….es ist wirklich traurig… Aber ich freu mich wirklich sehr über jedes Junges, das über den Berg ist! Ich freu mich auch, weil ich weiß, was für einen Trost ihr alle im letzten Jahr durch Qannik erfahren habt.

Jetzt muss ich dir noch über ein ganz besonderes Eisbärbaby erzählen, das in Dänemark geboren wurde. Seine Mutter konnte es nicht versorgen und deshalb wird es jetzt von Hand aufgezogen – gerade so wie ich! Ein liebevoller Pfleger wie mein Daddy kann einem Baby viel beibringen, aber ich dachte, meine Erfahrungen könnten dem Kleinen weiterhelfen und deshalb steh ich die meiste Zeit jetzt mit ihm in Verbindung. Der Kleine heißt auch Siku. Oh je, manchmal muss ich wirklich angestrengt nachdenken, dass ich die drei Sikus nicht verwechsle….wie du weißt, gibt es auch in Rhenen einen!

Es gibt ja soviel, was ein Bär wissen sollte. Zum Beispiel, dass man beim Winken mit der Tatze auf bärisch elegante Art und Weise sehr wahrscheinlich ein extra Croissant oder noch einen Lachs bekommt. Es ist sehr wichtig, süß auszuschauen und man muss auch darauf achten, nicht den Finger, ich meine natürlich die Kralle, zu zeigen, hihiii…. Die Zunge auf die süßest mögliche Art herauszustrecken könnte die Pfleger dazu bringen, dir neue Spielzeuge zu besorgen….Auf jeden Fall hat das bei meinem Daddy immer funktioniert, er konnte sich einfach meinen Wünschen nicht verschließen und brachte mir neue Sachen. Ich liebte ja seine alten Hosen so sehr….und den gelben Eimer, den er ‘zufällig’ in den Graben fallen ließ.

Wie wir damals über den ‚Unfall‘ lachten……

Da alle Eisbärbabys so süß sind, ‘dürfen’ sie sogar Sachen stibitzen – gerade so wie ich Onkel Ronnies Sandwich klaute. Erinnerst du dich? Ich hab noch immer seinen Gesichtsausdruck vor Augen, als er noch dachte, er habe das vergessen, das Brot mitzunehmen, während ich schon genüsslich das leckere Ding hinter seinem Rücken verzehrte. Genug der Erinnerungen…. Da Siku in Dänemark lebt, mag sein Pfleger vermutlich den kräftigen dänischen Käse. Ich habe ihm geraten, gut darauf zu achten, welches ‚Smörrebröd‘ er stibitzt. Auch ein Eisbär kennt schließlich gewisse Grenzen! Der dänische Käse liegt eindeutig jenseits der Grenze!!

Ich hab ihm auch gesagt, dass Salat was für Weicheier ist – und nicht für Eisbären. Natürlich ist Siku noch sehr jung, ein Baby halt, aber ich bin schon sehr neugierig darauf, ob ich ihm was beibringen konnte….und natürlich geht der Unterricht noch weiter!

Ich bin auch sehr froh über das erste Eisbärbaby, das je in Finnland auf die Welt kam! Da die Mutter sich um das Kleine kümmert, schau ich in Ranua nur ab und zu vorbei – halt um sicher zu sein, dass alles so läuft, wie ich mir das vorstelle.

Worüber ich wirklich sehr froh bin, ist, dass es so viele wunderbare Zoos und Tierparks für die neugeborenen Eisbärbabys gibt. Manchmal wünschte ich mir, ich hätte in einem von ihnen leben können….vielleicht wäre ich dann länger bei euch geblieben…obwohl ich, als mir Daddy diese neue Stelle anbot, einfach nicht widerstehen konnte. Wie du jetzt wahrscheinlich gemerkt hast, gibt es für einen Schutzengel ja so viel zu tun. Ich hab dir ja nur über zwei Eisbärbabys erzählt, aber es gibt ja noch viel mehr in der Wildnis, die meine Unterstützung brauchen. Bei ihnen geht es nicht um ein größeres Gehege und Bereicherung, sondern ums Überleben! Oh ja, meine Aufgabe verlangt viel von mir, aber sie gibt mir auch viel zurück…..

Zu guter Letzt möchte ich mich bei allen Freunden bedanken für ihre Anstrengungen, die Lebensbedingungen für die Zootiere zu verbessern. Im Namen aller Eisbären, ja sogar aller anderen Tiere, möchte ich euch sagen, dass das sehr geschätzt wird.

Oh mei, ich höre gerade, dass ein Eisbärbaby weint…. Ich muss losfliegen. Ich wünsche all meinen Freunden ein gutes Jahr.

Habe ich schon wieder geträumt? Vielleicht doch nicht, denn alle Croissants weg sind und auf meinem Cappuccino ist ein  Pfotenabdruck zu sehen.

It’s very difficult to summon this sad year and I want to make clear from the beginning that the following words are my very personal reflections.

The year 2011 was an awful year for all the Knut friends and animal lovers all over the world. We started the year with great hopes and expectations but our world stopped going around on Saturday afternoon, March 19th. Our beloved Knuti had left us. The pain and sorrow are impossible to describe in words – the wound is still fresh and deep although almost ten months have gone from that tragic day.

By the time I learnt to know Knut as a sweet cub I thought life was boring but suddenly I found things to enjoy again. Suddenly I had new energy and started doing things I never had imagined I could do. I’m sure this goes for many of you as well….. How quickly everything can change! The black Saturday took all the energy away, it took the brightness and light away, it made my ‘inner child’ feel old.

I also felt quilt. I loved Knut so much but I couldn’t protect him. I couldn’t help him…..

When I think back I really don’t know how I managed the first days after Knut’s death. One thing I do remember – I immediately decided that Knutitours and Knuti’s Weekly will continue to honour our beloved bear’s memory. They say ‘life must go on’ and, of course, life did go on but nothing was the same anymore. The Easter visit to Berlin was not the cheerful meeting we had hoped. The birthday meeting in December was a bittersweet occasion.

As time goes by I realize more and more how much we all loved our Knuti. Nothing can bring him back – all we can do now is to make sure he will never be forgotten. Knuti’s true friends need no reminders – he will always live in our hearts. However, I hope we can make the beautiful story of the Dream Team in Berlin known even for those who were not ‘in it’.

Dear Knuti, thank you for all the joy and happiness you brought into my life – and still do! For me a twinkling star, a falling leaf, a snow flake dancing in the air are messages from you. Yes, you still talk to me…..

I also want to thank all the other Knut related blogs and forums for going on and cherishing the memory of Knut! I hope you will keep up with the fantastic work!

The year 2011 was a black year for the Berlin Zoo. Not only did they loose Knut – even Shaina Pali, KoRaya, Bhumipol and the sweet little lion cubs had to cross the Rainbow bridge. I wish from the bottom of my heart that the next year will be better for the animals and their keepers.

The year 2011 had no mercy with us. When the hunting season started in Minnesota we were praying for Lily, Hope and Faith but our prayers were not heard. Hope was killed by a brainless hunter. Why the hell is hunting allowed in the area where the ‘protected’ bears live??? The feeling of sadness was – and is – connected with great fury!

We also lost two faithful Knut friends – Hartmuth and Erika. Somehow it feels like the years of innocence and childish happiness are gone…. even though I hope we can get at least some of the joy of life back.

Of course, there were also some happy moments during the year. When we were in deep mourning the light and brightness came from Alaska. A little polar bear girl was found abandoned and brought to the Alaska Zoo. I’m convinced she was sent to comfort us and she certainly carried out her job brilliantly. The cub, Qannik, is now living in the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky and I wish her and her keepers a wonderful time together. I also send my grateful greetings to Pat Lampi and John Gomes in Alaska who kept us informed about the little cub with reports, photos and videos. I hope you know how much they ment to us!

We have also had good news from different zoos where polar bear cubs have been born – Toronto, Rhenen, Ranua and Kolind – just to mention some of them. All these cubs are precious jewels and I wish them all a long and happy life!

Of course, we mustn’t forget all the cubs born in the wilderness. My heart is aching when I think of the starving mother bears trying to feed their cubs. Under those poor living circumstances every cub that survives is a true miracle! I hope our sweet fluffy bear angel is watching over them all - as a matter of fact I know he is!

Sadness and happiness go hand in hand but this year sadness was walking more with sadness…. However, I’m convinced that just like the bird Fenix we will rise from the ashes and be happy again cherishing our beautiful memories.

I hope I haven’t made you depressed. Somehow it just felt necessary to make a kind of  ‘final account’ of the year that’s gone.

It’s time to thank all the contributors who make this magazine for what it is.

2011- das Jahr, an das ich überhaupt nicht gerne zurückdenke, das Jahr, das ich nie vergessen werde kann

Es ist sehr schwer, dieses traurige Jahr zusammenzufassen, und ich will gleich klarstellen, dass die folgenden Worte mein ganz persönlichen Gedanken sind.

2011 war ein furchtbares Jahr für alle Knutfreunde und Tierliebhaber auf der ganzen Welt. Wir fingen das Jahr mit großen Hoffnungen und Erwartungen an, aber unsere Welt stand still Samstagnachmittag, am 19.

März. Unser geliebter Knuti hatte uns für immer verlassen. Es ist unmöglich, den Schmerz und die Trauer in Worte zu fassen – die Wunde ist noch immer frisch und tief, obwohl seit diesem tragischen Tag bereits 10 Monate vergangen sind.

Bevor ich Knut als süßes Baby kennenlernte, hielt ich das Leben für langweilig, aber plötzlich fand ich Dinge, die mir wieder Spaß machten. Plötzlich hatte ich neue Energien und begann, Dinge zu tun, von denen ich überhaupt nicht wusste, dass ich sie machen konnte. Ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, dass das für viele von uns zutrifft….Wie schnell sich alles ändern kann! Der Schwarze Samstag löschte all die Energie aus, er nahm den Glanz und das Licht, er machte, dass sich mein „inneres Kind” sehr alt anfühlte.

Ich empfand auch Schuld. Ich liebte Knut so sehr, aber ich konnte ihn nicht beschützen. Ich konnte ihm nicht helfen….

Wenn ich zurückdenke, weiß ich wirklich nicht mehr, wie ich die ersten Tage nach Knuts Tod bewältigte. An eines erinnere ich mich aber – ich beschloss sofort, dass es Knutitours und Knuti’s Weekly weiterhin geben sollte, um die Erinnerung an unseren geliebten Bären wachzuhalten. Man sagt so leicht „das Leben muss weitergehen” und natürlich ging das Leben auch weiter, aber nichts war mehr wie vorher. Der Berlinbesuch an Ostern war nicht das fröhliche Treffen, auf das wir uns gefreut hatten. Das Geburtstagstreffen im Dezember war eine bittersüße Angelegenheit.

Im Laufe der Zeit wurde mir immer klarer, wie sehr wir alle unseren Knuti liebten. Nichts kann ihn je wieder zurückbringen – das einzige, was wir tun können, ist sicherzustellen, dass er niemals vergessen wird. Knutis echte Freunde muss man daran nicht erinnern – er wird auf immer in unseren Herzen leben. Aber ich hoffe, wir können diese wunderbare Geschichte vom Dream Team in Berlin auch an diejenigen weitergeben, die nicht unmittelbar ‚dabei‘ waren.

Lieber Knuti, vielen Dank für all die Freude und das Glück, das du in mein Leben gebracht hast – und noch immer bringst! Für mich sind ein funkelnder Stern, ein Blatt, das vom Baum fällt, eine Schneeflocke, die in der Luft tanzt, kleine Botschaften von dir. Ja, du sprichst noch immer mit mir….

Ich möchte all den anderen Knut Blogs und Foren danken, dass sie weitermachen und die Erinnerung an Knut liebevoll aufrechterhalten. Ich hoffe, ihr macht mit eurer fantastischen Arbeit weiter!

Das Jahr 2011 war ein schwarze Jahr für den Berliner Zoo. Nicht nur, dass sie Knut verloren – auch Shaina Pali, KoRaya, Bhumipol und die süßen kleinen Löwenbabys mussten über die Regenbogenbrücke gehen. Ich wünsche mir von ganzem Herzen, dass das neue Jahr ein besseres für die Tiere und ihre Pfleger wird.

Das Jahr 2011 kannte keine Gnade für uns. Als in Minnesota die Jagdsaison begann, beteten wir alle für Lily, Hope und Faith, aber unsere Gebete wurden nicht erhört. Hope wurde von einem hirnlosen Jäger getötet. Warum zum Teufel erlaubt man in einer Gegend das Jagen, in der ‚geschützte‘ Bären leben??? Das Gefühl der Traurigkeit war – und ist – mit großem Zorn verknüpft!

Wir verloren auch zwei treue Knutfreunde – Hartmuth und Erika. Irgendwie fühlt es sich so an, als ob die Jahre der Unschuld und der kindlichen Freude vorbei sind … obwohl ich hoffe, dass wir wenigstens ein bisschen von unserer Lebensfreude zurückbekommen können.

Natürlich hatte das Jahr auch ein paar schöne Momente. Als wir in tiefer Trauer waren, kam das Licht und Strahlen aus Alaska. Ein kleines Eisbärmädel war verlassen aufgefunden und in den Alaska Zoo gebracht worden. Ich bin mir sicher, dass sie uns zum Trost geschickt wurde und diese Aufgabe hat sie ganz gewiss hervorragend erledigt. Die Kleine, Quannik, lebt nun im Lousville Zoo in Kentucke und ich wünsch ihr und ihren Pflegern eine wunderbare gemeinsame Zeit. Meine dankbaren Grüße gehen auch Pat Lampi und John Gomes in Alaska, die uns über das Eisbärkind in Berichten, Bildern und Videos informierten. Ich hoffe, sie wissen, wie viel sie uns bedeuteten!

Es gibt auch gute Nachrichten aus verschiedenen Zoos, in denen Eisbärbabys zur Welt kamen – Toronto, Rhenen, Ranua und Kolind – um ein paar zu nennen. Alle diese Welpen sind kostbare Juwelen und ich wünschen ihnen allen ein langes und glückliches Leben!

Natürlich dürfen wir die Eisbärbabys nicht vergessen, die in der Wildnis geboren werden. Mir tut es im Innersten weh, wenn ich an die hungernden Bärenmütter denke, die versuchen, ihre Kleinen zu nähren. Unter diesen extremen Lebensbedingungen ist jedes Junges, das überlebt, ein wahres Wunder! Ich hoffe, dass unser süßer fluffiger Bärenengel auf sie alle aufpasst – und in der Tat weiß ich, dass er das tut!

Freude und Leid gehen Hand in Hand, aber in diesem Jahr, war das Leid öfter mit dem Leid unterwegs… Aber ich bin mir sicher, dass wir uns wie der Vogel Phönix aus der Asche erheben und wieder fröhlich sein werden und unsere schönen Erinnerungen wertschätzen werden.

Ich hoffe, dass ich euch nicht deprimiert habe. Aber irgendwie hatte ich das Bedürfnis, eine Generalabrechnung mit dem Jahr, das jetzt vorbei ist, zu machen.

Es ist auch die Zeit, allen für ihre Beiträge zu danken, die das Magazin zu dem machen, was ist.

Das Jahr 2011 hat uns gelehrt, dass man nichts für sicher ansehen kann. Die Dinge können sich von jetzt auf gleich ändern. Ich hoffe, wir regen uns nicht mehr über Unwichtiges auf. Wir sind nicht perfekt und das was wir tun, ist vielleicht auch nicht perfekt – aber was soll’s!

Knut hat mir immer bei meinen Neujahrsgrüßen geholfen – auch diesmal. Wer könnte Liebe und Schönheit besser veranschaulichen als unser Knuti? Die folgenden Fotos sind vom Februar 2008 und wurden von Simone (Frühlingsstern) gemacht.

A few days before Christmas Tosca came out of her cave and was very excited. She was almost out of breath, she could hardly wait to tell the fantastic news to Nancy and Katjuscha.

Tosca: Ladies, ladies – I’ve got some great news for you! There are many new born polar bear babies in the Polar Bear Land.

Kati: Polar Bear Land? What’s that, where is it?

Tosca: I think it’s somewhere near Norway …. and there are lots of our relatives living there.

Nancy: Did you say newborn cubbies? Oh, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had a cub here, too…..

Tosca: Yes, it would be wonderful…. but we can’t have cubbies because we have no male here. Oh dear, sometimes a male could be quite useful don’t you think?

Kati: I’m getting nostalgic. It was so nice to have Knuti here with us…..

Tosca: I have an idea! Why don’t we go and visit the cubs?

Nancy: I’m on! But how far do we have to travel? Let’s see on the map….

Kati: Oh my, if Polar Bear Land is near Norway it really is far away from Bärlin! It must cost a lot of salmons to pay for the airline tickets. Let’s check our savings.

Tosca (blushing): I’m ashamed to confess that my salmon bank is empty. I’ve been so hungry lately….

Kati, Nancy (also blushing): Our banks are empty, too….. We haven’t been very succesful in saving salmons.

Tosca: Well, ladies, I have a solution. We’ll take our sightseeing bus to Tegel and then we’ll hitch hike! I don’t know exactly how to do that but we’ll find a way when we get to the airport.

Kati: Dear Tosca, we can’t go and visit the cubs empty handed, we must bring gifts!

Tosca: OK, we must save all the salmons, croissants and oxtails from now on. I think they’ll be most suitable gifts.

Now very busy – and hungry – days followed. The three ladies were packing, unpacking, packing, unpacking – well, you know how the ladies are! Finally the jute sacks were packed and the trojka was ready to leave.

When they arrived to Tegel they caused a minor panic among the other passangers…. and the airport personnel…..

Nancy: Why is everybody running out of the terminal?

Kati: I’m sure they all forgot something in their hotels – or maybe they want to do some more shopping in the KaDeWe. These humans are crazy about shopping, especially in Christmas time.

Tosca to a lady behind a ticket counter: Three tickets to Polar Bear Land, please. I’m sorry we can’t pay for them so we thought we’ll hitch hike. I’m sure you understand don’t you?

The lady behind the counter: I wouldn’t dream of asking you to pay for them …… I really wouldn’t!!! (This is rather hijacking than hitch hiking, she murmured for herself). However, I’m not sure there’s an airport in your destination. Frankly, I’ve never heard of Polar Bear Land…..

Kati: Oh well, give us the tickets and we’ll have a word with a pilot.

All three: Hello, Mr Pilot! Can you take us to Polar Bear Land?

The Pilot: I’ve never heard of Polar Bear Land. Where is it? Does it exist at all?

Tosca: Listen very carefully, Mr Pilot! We are going to Polar Bear Land and you’re going to fly us there!!

The Pilot: How do I navigate the plane? I don’t even know where we’re heading?

Nancy: It’s Christmas time – time for magic! You will find the way – besides we have a very special bear angel guide to help us.

The Pilot: Who am I to argue with three determined ladies….. Let’s take off!

Nancy: Oh, we have the whole plane for ourselves! How thoughtful of the airline company. We must send them a ‘thank you card’!

Tosca: Let’s make ourselves comfortable. Kati, will you check if there’s anything eatable? It looks like there are no stewardesses around….. and remember, we mustn’t touch the jute sacks. Those gifts are for the cubbies!!

After a few hours flight the pilot saw – to his big surprise – a runway and made a succesful landing.

The three ladies in chorus: Oh my, we are in the middle of nowhere – but it’s very beautiful here. What shall we do? How do we find the cubbies?

Suddenly they saw a lovely fluffy bear angel who said: Don’t you worry aunties. I’ll show you the way.

Tosca: I recognize your voice…. is it possible? Are you our Knuti?

The bear angel: Yes, mom, I’m Knuti and I’m here to help you.

The three ladies (with tears in their eyes): Dear Knuti, we have missed you so….. how good to meet you again! Merry Christmas to you!

There was another big surprise for our three ladies. They caught sight of three men riding camels!

Nancy: Who are those men?

The bear angel: Oh dear, they are the three wise men going to Bethlehem…. they certainly have lost their way….

The three ladies: Hihihii… and they call themselves the three WISE men, hahaa….

The bear angel: I will help them after I’ve guided you to the cubbies.

There was magic in the air when the three ladies were walking after the bear angel. Even the jute bags seemed to have lost their weight …. and mind you, the ladies had kept their promise of not touching the gifts!

The bear angel: Can you see that igloo? Soon you will see the newborn babies, too….

Tosca: Look, there’s a polar bear mom with a cub …. and there’s another….. Oh joy!

All three: Hello, dear mom polar bears. We come to welcome the cubbies to the world and we bring you gifts, too.

In the Bärlin zoo Tosca, Nancy and Kati woke up and wondered: What happened? Did you have the same dream as I had? Did you meet the bear angel and the lovely cubs?

Dear Golden Girls – it wasn’t a dream. It was Christmas Magic! You had the privilege to witness a wonderful miracle – newborn polar bear cubs!

Die drei weisen Damen und das Weihnachtswunder

Kurz vor Weihnachten kam Tosca aus ihrer Höhle und war sehr aufgeregt. Sie war richtig außer Atem, sie konnte Nancy und Katjuscha gar nicht schnell genug die fantastischen Neuigkeiten überbringen.

Tosca: Meine Damen, meine Damen – ich habe super Nachrichten für euch. Es gibt viele Eisbärbabys im Eisbärland.

Kati: Eisbärland? Was ist denn das? Wo liegt das?

Tosca: Ich glaub, es liegt irgendwo nahe bei Norwegen….dort leben noch viele unserer Verwandten.

Nancy: Hast du gerade Eisbärbabys gesagt? Oh, wär das nicht wunderbar, wenn wir hier auch ein Baby hätten..

Tosca: Ja, das wär wunderbar…aber wir können keine Babys haben, weil wir hier keine Herren haben. Ach je, manchmal war ein Herr doch ganz schön praktisch, oder?

Kati: Jetzt werde ich richtig nostalgisch. Es war so schön, als Knut bei uns war…

Tosca: Da fällt mir was ein! Warum besuchen wir die Babys nicht ganz einfach?

Nancy: Ich bin dabei! Aber wie weit müssen wir reisen?

Schauen wir uns mal die Landkarte an.

Kati Oh je, wenn Eisbärland in der Gegend von Norwegen liegt, dann ist es wirklich weit weg von Bärlin. Die Flugtickets müssen ja eine ganze Stange Lachs kosten. Machen wir mal Kassensturz.

Tosca (errötend): Ich muss leider gestehen, mein Lachsbankkonto ist leergeräumt. Ich war in letzter Zeit immer so hungrig….

Kati, Nancy (auch errötend): Unsere Konten sind auch leer…Wir haben auch keine Lachse sparen können.

Tosca: Nun, meine Damen, ich hab’s. Wir nehmen den Touri-Bus bis Tegel und dann trampen wir. Ich weiß zwar nicht genau, wie man das macht, aber wir werden schon eine Möglichkeit finden, wenn wir erst einmal am Flughafen sind.

Kati: Liebe Tosca, wir können die Babys doch nicht mit leeren Händen besuchen – wir brauchen Geschenke!

Tosca: OK, wir müssen halt von nun an alle Lachse, Croissants und Ochsenschwänze sparen. Ich glaub, das wären passende Geschenke.

Jetzt folgten einige sehr arbeitssame – und hungrige – Tage. Die drei Damen packten ein, packten aus, packten ein – nun, ihr wisst ja alle, wie Damen so sind! Schließlich waren die Jutesäcke gepackt und die Troika stand zur Abreise bereit.

Als sie in Tegel ankamen, verursachten sie eine kleinere Panik unter den anderen Passagieren….und dem Flughafenmitarbeitern.

Nancy: Warum rennt denn jetzt jeder aus dem Terminal?

Kati: Ich bin mir sicher, sie haben alle was in ihren Hotels vergessen….oder vielleicht wollen sie noch ein bisschen im KaDeWe einkaufen gehen. Diese Menschen sind ja immer so verrückt aufs Shoppen, besonders vor Weihnachten.

Tosca, zu einer Dame am Ticket-Schalter: Drei Tickets bitte fürs Eisbärland. Es tut mir leid,aber wir können sie nicht bezahlen, und deshalb hab ich mir gedacht, das wir hitch-hiken (trampen). Sie verstehen doch, was ich meine, oder?

Dame am Schalter: In meinen kühnsten Träumen würde ich von Ihnen verlangen, dass Sie die Tickets bezahlen….Das würde ich nie tun!! (Das ist ja eher hijacking (eine Flugzeugentführung) als hitch-hiking (trampen), murmelte sie vor sich hin). Jedoch weiß ich nicht genau, ob es an Ihrem Reiseziel auch einen Flughafen gibt. Ganz ehrlich, ich habe noch nie vom Eisbärland gehört…

Kati: Nun denn, geben Sie uns ganz einfach die Tickets und wir werden uns mal mit dem Piloten unterhalten.

Alle drei: Hören Sie uns gut zu, Herr Pilot,  wir reisen ins Eisbärland und Sie fliegen uns hin!!

Pilot: Und wie navigiere ich den Flieger? Ich weiß ja nicht einmal, in welcher Richtung das liegt.

Nancy: Jetzt ist doch die Weihnachtszeit – Zeit für Wunder! Sie werden den Weg schon finden – außerdem haben wir einen ganz besonderen Bärenengel, der uns den Weg zeigt.

Der Pilot: Wer bin ich schon, dass ich mich mit drei sehr resoluten Damen anlege…Also starten wir!

Nancy: Oh, wir haben das ganze Flugzeug ja für uns alleine! Wie rücksichtsvoll von der Airline. Wir müssen denen unbedingt eine „Danke”-Karte schreiben!

Tosca: Kommt, machen wir’s uns bequem. Kati, kannst du mal schauen, ob was Essbares an Bord ist? Es sieht ja ganz so aus, als wären keine Stewardessen da….und bitte denk dran, die Jutesäcke rühren wir nicht an. Das sind die Geschenke für die Babys!!

Nach ein paar Flugstunden sah der Pilot – zu seiner allergrößten Überraschung – eine Landebahn und setzte die Maschine sanft auf.

Die drei Damen im Chor: Oh mei, wir sind ja jetzt mitten in der Pampa – aber es ist sehr schön da. Was machen wir bloß? Wie finden wir nur die Babys?

Plötzlich sahen sie den fluffigen Bärenengel, der sprach: Macht euch keine Sorgen, liebe Tantchen. Ich zeig euch den Weg.

Tosca: Ich kenn doch deine Stimme…ist das möglich? Bist du unser Knuti?

Bärenengel: Ja, Mama, ich bin’s, Knuti, und ich bin da, um euch zu helfen.

Die drei Damen (mit Tränen in den Augen): Lieber Knuti, du hast uns so gefehlt…wie schön, dich wieder zu treffen! Dir Frohe Weihnachten!

Es gab noch eine Überraschung für unsere drei Damen. Sie erhaschten den Blick auf drei Männer auf Kamelen!

Tosca: Wer sind denn die Männer?

Bärenenger: Ach ja, das sind die drei weisen Männer auf dem Weg nach Bethlehem…die haben sich bestimmt verirrt….

Die drei Damen: Hihihi und die nennen sich WEISE, hahha…

Barenengel: Ich werde ihnen helfen, wenn ich euch zu den Babys geführt habe.

Die Luft war voller Zauber, als die drei Damen mit dem Bärenengel weiterzogen. Sogar die Jutesäcke schienen ihnen nicht mehr so schwer…..obwohl, aufgemerkt, die Damen ihr Versprechen gehalten und die Geschenke nicht angerührt hatten!

Bärenengel: Könnt ihr das Iglu dort sehen? Bald werdet ihr auch die neugeborenen Babys sehen…

Tosca: Seht mal, da ist die Eisbärmama mit einem Baby…und dort ist noch eine…Was für eine Freude!

Alle drei: Hallo, liebe Eisbärmamas. Wir sind gekommen, um die Babys in der Welt willkommen zu heißen und haben euch auch Geschenke mitgebracht.

Im Bärlin Zoo wachten Tosca, Nancy und Kati auf und fragten sich: Was war geschehen? Habt ihr auch dasselbe geträumt wie ich? Habt ihr den Bärenengel und die süßen Babys getroffen?

Liebe Golden Girls – es war kein Traum. Es war das Weihnachtswunder. Ihr hattet das Privileg, einem Wunder beizuwohnen – neugeborenen Eisbärbabys!

…. and now…. let’s party!!

Dear friends, the December visit to Berlin was very different from the previous visits and it’s difficult to express in words all the emotions we all had. However, I’ll give it a try….

It was a very windy morning when we started our trip to the CCC and we were a bit afraid it might affect the flights but our plane took off according to the schedule and after 45 minute in the air we landed in Tegel. We had agreed with Gudrun F that she would meet us in the airport to shoot some sequences for her documentary. Needless to say we felt very VIPpy

We shared the taxi to the hotel where Teddybärenmutti and Teddybärenvati already were waiting for us. We gave a short ‘interwiew’ to Gudrun who needs a few more months to finish the documentary. So many changes have to be done after the sad Saturday in March – things must be described from a different angle now. We wish her best of luck!

After a little siesta it was time to pick up the gifts to our friends and leave for the Kartoffelkiste in Europa Center. I  simply can’t describe the feeling when we entered the restaurant. Almost everybody else were already there and gave us such a warm welcome – hugs, smiles and tears, exchange of gifts….. It really felt like a big family meeting. We had the great pleasure of sharing the table with Bearnini, Barbara, Viktor and Andrea. It goes without words that we were all having a good time.

I heard that Tosca, Nancy and Katjuscha had been given a Christmas tree each. I first praised the zoo for this lovely gesture but later I learnt it was a Knut friend who had brought the trees to the ladies!! Why am I not surprised??

Cleo had made beautiful napkin arrangements and Barbara had brought this lovely and touching birthday decoration.

On Sunday morning we wanted to be in time for the feeding of the three ladies and after renewing our annual tickets we entered the zoo. Walking past Knut’s little enclosure brought, of course, tears in my eyes – especially when I saw there were already flowers and cards from his friends. Somehow the enclosure now seems like a desert island in the zoo even if Maika is living there.

Knut’s friends were  selling candles, Christmas cards, buttons, bookmarks and many other things for the benefit of the animals in the zoo. Of course, we did some shopping, too!

When we came to the three’s company they were waiting for the feeding. The furs of the ladies didn’t look good at all but we heard they are getting treatment against the mites so let’s hope they’ll soon have white, fluffy furs again.

At 10.30 Frau Weckert came with a bucket filled with meat and three salmons.

-  This meat is so yammy …..

…. but hey, I heard there would be a salmon, too. Might one ask where it is???

- I’m still waiting….. Please, don’t make me wait too long!!

- Will you excuse me, I have to make an urgent phone call.

Since I had a great pain in my knee I couldn’t walk around in the zoo as I had planned. We just saw the animals living by the path to the zoo restaurant. However, we were lucky to see a real ‘slide-show’ by the sea lions. They kept on diving and sliding over the flat stone in the middle of their pool. We were too fascinated and forgot to make a video of it …. but decided to do that the next day. Of course, the lovelies weren’t in the ‘sliding’ mood but after a patient waiting some of them felt pity of us and gave us a very short show. Vesa managed to get a few seconds on the video and put the camera away. You can probably guess what immediately happened? Yes, the little rascals came all like a string of pearls – not only once but several times….. It was, however, all so quick that when the camera was ready again the show was over!

In the evening our Berlin Embassador Dumba had invited us (Annemarie, TBM+TBM, Vesa and me) to her place for a cosy evening. A beautifully laid table was waiting for us with several kinds of cakes, a good dinner and of course, all possible kinds of beveridges. We all made a toast to Uncle Sergej when we tasted Danziger Goldwasser

We were making a lot of jokes of our bad knees, bad shoulders, bad backs – you name it. We also decided to have a Miss Mobilat (Rollator) competition in the Knuipe. If you want to place your bets I would like to recommend Annemarie or myself Although we are rivals now we had a really good time together!

Dear Dumba, thank you ever so much for your hospitality! You never save any effort to make us feel like home in the CCC. I’m sure I’m talking for all of us saying the we really appreciate that.

Even the cosiest evening has an end so we had to go back to our hotel to get some rest before Monday – the birthday.

We started the day with a visit to a flower shop where we bought three bouquets of 5 roses - one from TBM + TBV, one from Vesa and me and one with a card ‘From the readers of KWM’ so there were flowers from all of you. We had planned to put the roses and cards by Knuti’s little enclosure but we met some very upset visitors. All the flowers and cards from yesterday had been removed and the same thing was with great certainty going to happen with today’s gifts to Knut.

Birgit B, Inge aus Copenhagen and Waltraud told us there was now a Knut statue in the cemetary in Spandau – side by side with the memento of Thomas Dörflein. A private person has paid for it and of course, we were all glad to hear it. Birgit offered to take the flowers, cards and other gifts to the cemetary where they wouldn’t be removed at once. We all thought that was a great idea.

Even if most of the flowers were taken to the cemetary there were lots of them both by the little enclosure and by the big bears’ enclosure. I couldn’t help my tears flowing while I watched all the beautiful cards and remembered how it was and thought how it could have been….. how it should have been…..

Maika must have been wondering what was going on.

I found it very touching that somebody had even remembered Bernie.

Since the Golden Girls were resting we just watched them for a while and went to the zoo restaurant to get a hot drink. The weather was rather chilly but luckily it didn’t rain. Once again the weather forecasts were wrong!

In the restaurant a Knut friend showed us a beautiful video she had made. What a lovely video it is! I hope it will be availabe to you all before long. It was impossible not to cry and nobody even tried to hide the tears. It was a very touching moment when we were all gathered there – remembering.

All in all it was a bitter sweet day in the zoo. There was no cheerful celebration but it felt good to be there. I felt our Bear Angel Knut’s presence very strongly and I’m sure I was not the only one.

In the evening it was time for the traditional Knut meeting in Zur Kneipe – our favourite hang-out in Bärlin.

A Kneipe-meeting without Ralph presenting his newest teddy friends wouldn’t be any meeting…..

After a good dinner and a toast to our Knuti and to all the hold-the-liners it was time for the christening of Teddybärenmutti’s latest teddy family member – Inge-Lotte from Denmark. At the Copenhagen airport Vesa and I saw this lovely bear and heard her saying: ‘I’d like to have a good home’ and where else would there be a better home than by Teddybärenmutti?

Since this teddy comes from Denmark it was quite clear that Inge must be her goodmother …..

…. and who would be a more suitable goodfather than Ralph!

The next day we decided to visit the Tierpark even though we knew we could only make it to the polar bears that luckily have their enclosure very near the gate. It’s very easy to get to the park – buss 100 from Bahnhof Zoo and then U-bahn 5 from Alexanderplatz that stops just outside the entry!

Before we saw any polar bears we saw a great polar bear friend – Ralph was already admiring our fluffy friends. Troll was inside so we could see sweet Tonya playing in the water with a big wood stick. Aika was mostly lying on the rocks with a very dignified facial expression. She seemed to be saying ‘OK, she’s a lovely girl but this old lady is still in charge here’.

The two bears don’t look like closest friends but they can tolerate each other.

Tonya really is a beautiful, fluffy girl – even if she in this photo looks like a blurry girl Please, watch the video in the end of this report so you can have a better look of her.

It’s really a pity we couldn’t see more of the lovely Tierpark but at least we got an impression how it would be strolling along the paths and watching all the beautiful animals. Luckily there are wonderful reports by Yeo, Ludmila and Uwe in KWM so I recommend you to see them. I’m sure we’ll be visiting this park again – hopefully with better knees!!

We came by the U-bahn to Alexanderplatz and visited a Christmas Market there. Of course, a glass of Glühwein was a ‘must’ and we found a cosy, little cottage where we could make ourselves comfortable - and warm.

This day was also the National Day of Finland so in the evening we went to celebrate our home country’s independence.

This is the little schnitzel we ordered in the Bier Saloon! In Berlin you really don’t have to run to McDonald’s after a restaurant visit

Our visit was proceeding towards the end and we only had some packing to do…… Well, ‘only packing’ isn’t really a proper expression. We hadn’t shopped very much but we got so many gifts from all the friends we met that it was almost a mission impossible to find enough place in our suitcases. Finally we managed to get everything in and even close the suitcases. Do I hear a standing ovation??

The flight back home went smoothly and we were welcomed home by Mimmi and Nalle who seemed to be very happy to meet the tin openers again. Of course, we were as happy to meet our ‘Stuben Tigers’!

It was a different birthday visit in Berlin but we are both glad we made it. Although Knut isn’t there anymore physically there are so many things reminding of him….. whenever I see a Berliner bear I think of him, the Christmas lights and decorations remind me of the happy expectation before his birthdays….. Yes, even if we are still waiting for a memento in the zoo there are a lot of  things to remind of him – KNUT STILL IS BÄRLIN!

We want to thank all our friends for sharing the tears and the laughter during our visit and of course, for all the lovely gifts. We don’t know when we’ll meet the next time but one thing’s for sure – we’ll meet again by Knut!
