What is a standard 2 tier cake?

Cake Size You need – A two tier cake means you need two cakes (composed of layers) in two different sizes. The standard size is usually a 6″ cake stacked on top of a 8″ cake and it feeds about 40-50 people depending on how big you cut the slices. Remember it may not look like it can feed that many people but stacked cakes are taller than regular cakes which means you can cut the slices thinner and still have a nice slice of cake.

Cake Serving Guide How Much Does A Two Tier Cake Cost Cake serving size can vary depending on the shape of your cake and who’s in charge of cutting! Party serving amounts are based on cake slices that measure about 1½ x 2 inches in size. When deciding on the cake size for your event, you should review a cake portion and serving guide before deciding on the perfect cake size.

    • This will give you a general idea of what size cake to order to achieve the desired number of servings needed.

A single-tier (2 or 3 layer) cake has set number of servings. However, this can vary based on the shape of the cake. For example, a square 8 inch, 2-layer cake will give you more servings than a round 8-inch 2-layer cake. If you need to feed a large number of people, a tiered cake may be the best option.

    1. Tiered cakes give more flexibility in their number of servings.

What is the difference between a 2 tier cake and a 2 layer cake?

What Is The Difference What Is The Difference? Working with people from ALL walks of life I encounter a lot of confusion regarding cake terminology, and rightfully so. Each Cakery seems to have their own method, format, and assembly of cakes. I hope to help you understand the difference between our SHEET, LAYER and TIERED CAKES, as well as, how they are most beneficial to your event or celebration. How Much Does A Two Tier Cake Cost SHEET CAKES are comprised of a 2″ high cake, baked in a rectangular pan. They can be decorated for your special event OR scored. We refer to SHEETS by their DIMENSIONS, since they are NOT standard quarter, half and full sheet sizes. There are 3 size options to choose from, posted on our cake menu.

Sheet cakes are not typically filled, BUT we do offer a filling as an upgrade. Costs will vary depending on the size of the sheet cake. Adding a FILLING requires cutting the cake horizontally and creating room for a flavored crème, preserve or frosting to be incorporated. SCORING the cake simply means the cake is pre-marked into servings, with a small decoration on each piece.

SCORED CAKES are often used for larger parties where the DECORATED CAKE will not provide all the servings needed for the event. Ease of cutting and serving sheet cakes makes them appealing for those events where guests will be serving themselves. How Much Does A Two Tier Cake Cost LAYER CAKES are comprised of 2 layers of cake with a flavored filling OR buttercream frosting (sandwiched) between them. These cakes are referred to by their diameter. A typical layer cake is 4 1/2″ high. We offer various shapes and sizes, which are posted on our cake menu.

LAYER CAKES tend to have more visual appeal than sheet cakes and allow for more design work on the sides. Small LAYER CAKES can be cut into wedges (like a pie) BUT our layer cakes are larger and we recommend cutting them into slabs measuring approximately 4 ½” H X 2″ D X 1″ W. Ask for a cutting guide when you pick up your order.

These cakes are better cut and plated for your guests rather than self serve. LAYER CAKES have a formal presentation and are used for those special occasions that call for celebration! How Much Does A Two Tier Cake Cost TIERED CAKES consist of multiple layer cakes of different sizes stacked on top of each other like a traditional wedding cake. Tiered cakes must be handled with TLC and prefer to be transported on a LEVEL SURFACE. We allow pick up for small tier cakes BUT we recommend delivery service for anything over 45 servings. How Much Does A Two Tier Cake Cost KITCHEN CAKES are layered sheet cakes that INCLUDE a flavored filling and are frosted, but NOT decorated (other than borders). These cakes are tailored specifically to weddings. KITCHEN CAKES are not displayed, but held in the prep area with your catering staff. How long can a two tier cake last?

How to Make Your Cakes Last Longer Whether you have way too many leftovers from your birthday or event, or you want to commemorate your wedding day by saving the top tier of your cake for your one-year anniversary, there are a lot of reasons why you might need to store cake safely.

Like any other food, if you’re going to be storing a cake for later then you have to keep in mind it can only last as long as the earliest ingredient spoil. You also have to work around whether or not the cake will do well left out, in the refrigerator, or in the freezer. Saving a piece of a special day is important though, and so below are the rules on how long you can keep the and what you can do to extend its life.

Generally speaking, there are a few rules about how long cake can last. A standard cake that is not a fruitcake, that has no fresh fruit, and no whipped cream can last for 1 or 2 days when left on the counter. A standard cake in the fridge can last 2-4 days, and put in the freezer it can last for 2-4 months while remaining fresh.

    1. Cakes with fresh fruit can only be left out on the counter the same day it was served.
    2. In the fridge, it lasts 1 to 2 days, and in the freezer, it also lasts 2-4 months.
    3. Cake with whipped cream can only be left out on the counter the same day it was served, it can last 1 to 2 days in the fridge, and cannot be put in the freezer due to the whipped cream.

Fruitcake can last 3-25 years when refrigerated. To make a cake last longer when you store it on the counter or in the fridge you should keep it in a tightly closed container to keep air out, which will help the cake stay moist. If you are making a cake that you’re going to be enjoying in the future, you should freeze it before you ice it, as it will freeze better without icing, which can be made and decorated later.

    1. One of the biggest reasons that people want to store cake, though, is keeping a safe in the freezer for a year so that it can be enjoyed a year later on a couple’s first anniversary.
    2. If you’re going to do this, it is a great idea to save the entire top tier of the cake, rather than just keeping a serving.

This is because the more bacteria that your cake is exposed to the worse off you will be when storing it. If the cake has been sliced and left sitting out for your guests to possibly pick up and enjoy, then there is a high chance it has been exposed to bacteria.

    1. If you take the top tier away after the photos are done and store it away, then it will have a better chance.
    2. You then need to wrap it in saran wrap at home, then tinfoil, then put it in an airtight freezer back before being put into a deep freeze.
    3. Before you enjoy the cake, though, make sure that it does not have any mold and freezer burn.

When you’re saving cake, the number one rule is to be careful and don’t expose yourself to harmful bacteria or mold that could make what is supposed to be lovely into a stomach ache. All credit goes to : How to Make Your Cakes Last Longer

    Why homemade cakes are expensive?

Many folks see pictures of beautiful custom designed cakes in magazines and on web sites. When they need a special cake for a birthday, holiday, graduation or wedding, they begin searching for a cake artist who can create a cake that will be the talk of the party.

However, they often get sticker shock when they hear a price quote! So their options are.1-keep searching for a baker that offers a lower price; this may be someone with little experience, and the result may or may not end up the way they want; 2-settle for a grocery store cake, which they pick from a book, with little to no customization, and which is often baked and frozen for months in advance; or 3-they realize to get that made-from-scratch, customized, extraordinary cake, they will have to make the investment.

So, “why do custom cakes cost so much???” The following excerpts are re-printed with permission from Lina Sleiman of Lina’s Custom Cakes, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Many people think that a baker that makes cakes from their home should charge less than a store front bakery.

    1. This is not the case for a number of reasons.
    2. A home baker can make the same cake a bakery can make.
    3. It requires the same tools, same pans, an oven, mixer, measuring equipment.
    4. Not to mention all the same ingredients.
    5. A home baker does not just bake one size of cake, they bake many so they need multiple pans.

There are hundreds of decorating tools including tons of icing tips of all different sizes and shapes, piping bags, icing spatulas, storage containers, knifes, tons of flower making tools, rolling pins etc. A home baker also is using electricity, gas, water, dish soap, and paper towels just as a store would need and the have to have a location to bake in as well.

The only difference is a bakery cooks in mass amounts so they have larger everything so they can make more in the same amount of time but when you look at the big picture and calculate it, each cake from a home baker and a store require roughly the same amount of money to make. Home bakers will put the same, if not more, dedication into your cake.

A cake artist does not just wake up one morning knowing how to bake every recipe and how to properly pipe icing using every tip in different ways. It takes time, practice and patience. That also means it takes many baked cakes to practice decorating, and many pounds of icing, many piping bags and countless sleepless nights trying to perfect the art of making a beautiful buttercream rose or a beautiful basket weave on the side of a cake.

    1. There are so many cake flavors a baker needs to be able to offer so they must practice over and over again every flavor until they have the perfect recipe.
    2. Not to mention training classes, food safety courses and cake decorating expos they need to go to to keep up with the current trends.
    3. It takes many hours, many dollars in testing cakes and frostings and many attempts to perfect the art of cake decorating.

When a customer places an order, there are designs to be drawn up, and often re-designs as many people change their mind between their initial order and the time their cake is actually made. Countless hours are spent to match the exact color in the napkins or dress, or to copy the lace pattern in the picture the customer provided.

And then-oh the beautiful details that make a cake a one of a kind, pop out of the crowd, jaw dropping cake. A single life size rose made of gum paste takes about 2 – 2 1/2 hours to create, after countless months of practice, of course. Every petal must be pressed in a silicone mold to vein it perfectly and each layer of petals must colored to look like real rose petals.

Each petal is hand glued using hand mixed edible glue, and shaped and curled to look just right. Each animal on a baby shower cake requires perfect precision, and weeks of practice to be able to get the correct proportions for the head, body, arms, legs, tail, eyes and ears.

    1. If something is not quite right, that cute little monkey could end up looking like a cat or worse an unknown breed.
    2. Larger cakes require what most people don’t even realize-an entire internal structure of dowels and supports to keep each tier perfectly level and structurally sound.
    3. A cake designer’s job is a cross between a baker, an artist, an architect, and a mathematician.

And every tier must be trimmed and leveled to make building this wonderful work of art structurally safe. And the ingredients for made-from-scratch cakes are not an inexpensive boxed cake. The best cakes are homemade using bakers sugar, sifted cake flour, real butter, pure vanilla, homemade fillings and organic eggs.

Speaking of fillings, something like chocolate ganache is made from the best quality chocolate; fruit fillings are created using fresh fruits that are carefully hand picked; cream fillings or lemon curd are hand made from endless egg yolks and lemon zest. Then the frosting-real butter or whipping cream or both, double sifted sugar, creamed until it is perfectly smooth, not too little, not too much.

Over the frosting on many cakes is fondant. Any good fondant is made from scratch, and it takes much time to knead, roll and apply it perfectly to achieve the beautiful smooth look that only a fondant cake can give. You get the idea. One more thing to think about.when you order dessert at a nice restaurant, you can easily spend upwards of $5 per dessert, and it’s a dessert anyone else in the restaurant can order-not a custom, special order cake designed and created specially for you and your celebration.
