Hot weather but cool polar bears!

27.6.2020 – Photos by Anna Novikova and Arkadij Laptenko

I have missed the polar bear family in Novosibirsk but now the zoo is open again so our friends Anna and Arkadij could visit Gerda, Shauna, Nordi and Kai. After the almost three months long break it’s really wonderful to meet the polar bear family again.

The first morning after the re-opening was, of course, something very special.

No doubt the family was gladly surprised seeing many visitors again.

Oh bear, Shauna and Nordi have grown a lot during the three months and they’re almost as big as mama Gerda.

Hmm, I wonder what Gerda was thinking when she showed her tongue … Maybe she saw a visitor not keeping the distance and not wearing a mask. I guess showing the tongue is a polar bear’s way of showing the finger. 🙂

Hurray! The visitors are back! – Where’s the music? I feel like dancing …. 🙂

For the time being it’s really hot in Novosibirsk so, naturally, the polar bears enjoyed the water games even more than usual.

There are both big and small toys in the water.

Here comes the submarine with a yellow periscope. 🙂

Amazing!! This submarine runs on land, too!!

As we all know blue seems to be the favourite toy colour for all polar bears.

An elegant jump on the big ball.

The keepers have arranged a little heap of snow in the shadow where the bear family can ‘take it cool’.

One could think this photo was taken during the Winter ….

How cool and refreshing!

Papa Kai is, of course, as gorgeous as always!

A typical polar bear pose – but what has made his paws so green? Well, it is Summer and the grass is green ….

Close-ups of the family – their faces are exactly as lovely as we remember!

I’m not sure which is Nordi and which is Shauna but they are both very lovely! They are big but they still have their baby faces.

When will the heat go away? It makes me so tired.

Calm down! There’s a snow heap behind you and there’s fresh water in our pool. We just have to be patient and wait a few months – then the Winter will be back.

That’s all for now but, please, stay tuned. We’ll be back soon!

  1. Dear Mervi, Anna and Arkadij
I am always grateful to see the Novosibirsk Polars here.
The pictures are lovely and despite the warmer weather all the white fur is in great shape.

  2. Dear Anna
How nice, that you could visit the Zoo again.
The children have grown a lot. Good to see
them well and healthy ! 🙂

  4. What fun to see Shauna and Nordi again. They seem to be doing just fine, especially with their cool pile of snow. They have grown so much, but that is what polar bear cubs do.

Thank you for the beautiful photos.

  5. Liebe Mervi,

The visitors are back! – Where’s the music? I feel like dancing ….

  6. Dear Mervi, Anna and Arkadij!
Thank you for this refreshing post and the beautiful photos of this charming and good-looking family!
The polar bears in Novosibirsk are doing fine despite of the heat wave. They have a pool filled with cool water, many toys and attentive and loving keepers who cheered them even with a snow heap.
What more could any bear wish in summertime – except for as many blueberries he can eat…

  7. Thank you very much dear Mervi, Anna and Arkadij.
Best wishes to Kai, Gerda, Shauna and Nordi.

  8. Dear Anna, Arkadij and Mervi!
It is great that the zoo is open again. The bears have many toys in the pool 🙂

Great! Scharf! . . .

Not to forget to say ‘THANK YOU VERY MUCH!” to you, dear MERVI
