The legends live forever

Fourteen years have gone since the day Tosca gave birth to a tiny polar bear baby. Unfortunately she couldn’t take care of the cub herself but we will always be grateful for the precious gift she gave us.

Thomas Dörflein gave the name ‘Knut’ to the cubbie and when the first photos of the keeper and the bear were published people throughout the world were charmed.

The story of Knut and TD has been told so many times and in so many ways that there’s no need to repeat it …. we can instead take a walk on the memory lane and remember all the wonderful moments we had.

The story had a very sad end but we can also claim it had no end …. why would so many Knut friends otherwise still celebrate his birth and cherish the memory of our magic bear.

Dear Knut, you were so special, so beloved – and you still are!

Our little dreamer keeps touching our hearts ….

Today would – and should! – have been your fourteenth birthday and maybe there would have been even small Knutis if you had been allowed to stay with us. It would have been so wonderful ….. With a deep sigh I just have to accept we can’t always get what we want. However, I’m happy having had the privilege of knowing you!

  1. Dear Mervi

Again you created great collages with our Knut.
As I lived far away from Berlin, I first followed
Knuts life via TV and press. But I also had
the privilege, to visit him in 2008 & 2009.
The big run was over and so you had
more quiet moments at the enclosure
(sometimes). We do not know, if Knut
would have lived longer in an other
Zoo – for me, it was a fault, to give
him to the Golden Girls so early.
We all know, how bad the policy
of Dr.B. was at that time. But
    Knut coped with the new
    situation and soon he
played with his mother the icy water.
    We can´t change what
    happend, but we can
    remember the precious
    moments, we had with Knut.
    Everybody has its own memories,
    and Berlin photo-aunties always
informed us well about Knuts life !

    Greetings from
    Frankfurt a. M.

  2. Dear Mervi

Knut would have been 14 years old today. He will always have a firm place in my heart.

Through him I have found a new great joy: Polar bears!
And of course my love for the ravishing Giovanna.

I was in hospital when Knut had his first encounter with the dashing Italian Lady. My husband brought me pictures and I and the whole station took great pleasure in them.
I also admit that I smiled, too, as Giovanna greeted Knut in her very special ice bear way.
Even though I was not in good health at the time, I knew I must and will visit this enchanting couple next spring.
    And it was.

Thank you, dear Mervi, for your stylish and festive collages and these wonderful lines.

Also to you, dear Dumba, thank you for your k / cute collage.

    Warm greetings,

  3. “The legends live forever” – Unfortunately they use to die young!

It’s kind of a miracle that (mostly) due to your, MERVI’s, efforts the old traditions live on, as e.g. by the monthly birthday remembrances for this polar bear boy beyond compare, a place to stay in daily contact, a place to exchange minds with focus on KNUT and other polar bears, animals, and zoos but also general topics, and a place for short infos accompanied by a pic (or a nice or interesting pic alone!

Not to forget the personal memories about KNUT that are always callable from our very personal minds.

Thanks for everything, dear Mervi, and also this time for your words and the collages that were made from DORO (are this new ones? Are you still in contact? Or are those beatiful fayritale-like collages from your archives. Whatsoeven: Thanks also to her.
“The story had a very sad end but we can also claim it had no end …. why would so many Knut friends otherwise still celebrate his birth and cherish the memory of our magic bear.”

    . . .

It’s also nice to get to know someone’s personal description of its first personal contacts with KNUT and his surroundings, the more from people that started late to do so. Always appreciated. Thanks.

  4. dear Mervi,
thank you so much for your right words, for many of us this story will never end as long as we will live, Knuti in the winterwonderland so lovely
dear Dumba and dear Doro, thank you for your lovely and touching collages

    dear greetings

  5. Dear Knuti,
We miss you so much. We will never forget you. We will always love you. You never left us Knuti. You are here. You will always be here.
    We love you Knuti.

  6. Dear Mervi and Dumba
Six years ago I wrote about my association with Knut and Berlin
I had hoped to be in Berlin to join in remembering this remarkable Polar Bear. Thank you for allowing me to join you here with your beautiful images.

  7. Dear Mervi !
Today our community is thinking of this beloved bearboy and celebrates his fourteenth birthday.
Nobody who had the pleasure to get to know this sweet bear will ever forget him and will be forever grateful having witnessed this wonderful time with him and – not to forget – Thomas Dörflein.
Perhaps and hopefully next year this Corona crisis is history and we will be able to have a party in honor of Knut´s birthday again.

Your collages are beautiful and touching the same time. Thank you so much!
I loved especially “The little dreamer” and almost had to swallow some tears.
Doris used to say that he is/was the most beautiful young male polar bear she´d ever seen and I agree!

    Liebe Dumba!
Dankeschön für die herzige Collage. Auch für manchen von uns werden die drei Fs immer wichtiger… 😉 und die Pflichten verlieren – GsD – an Bedeutung.

Allen einen schönen und gemütlichen 2. Advent!

  8. Liebe.Mervi!
