Gerda’s thoughts after the kids have left her

7.2.2021 – Photos by Arkadi Laptenko

When Gerda comes out of the den it looks like she’s still waiting for Nordi and Shauna to follow her. However, she soon realizes that the kids have left. Gerda is a clever polar bear mama and knows that when the birds can fly they will leave the nest.

According to the zoo Nordi and Shauna are now together in a separate enclosure made especially for them. However, the visitors can’t see them so there are no new photos of the sweeties. Where and when the twins will leave Novosibirsk is not known yet.

Maybe a hearty breakfast will put her in a better and happier mood.

Now that the twins have gone Gerda can have all the toys for herself.

The balls have no fur but she loves to cuddle them anyway. Are the balls substitutes for Nordi and Shauna ….

Well, it’s no good to be sad! Gerda finds a way to entertain herself.

Isn’t it nice the keepers have brought me these toys!

I must try the power of my teeth. OK, my ‘dining room furniture’ seems to be working just fine!

What luck we have so much snow here.

I’m very aware of the fact that I’m a beautiful polar bear lady but rolling in the snow keeps my fur shining white and makes me extra charming.

I hope I won’t get too charming …. 🙂

What an adorable fur ball! Gerda looks like a young cubbie in this photo.

I wonder what Kai is doing now …. Does he know I’m alone again ….

It would be so nice to meet the gorgeous bear man again!

At the same time Kai is coming out of his den. Wow, the door is almost too small for this big bear.

I can smell Gerda! She’s so close but still so far away.

This guy’s in love and hasn’t got so much appetite …..

…. he’s dreaming of a dinner with Gerda.

I’m sure Gerda would gladly accept an invitation to a nice dinner together with Kai.

I must calm down …. maybe a mouthful of snow will cool me off …. 🙂

Thank you for watching! I’m sure both Kai and I will be back soon – maybe there will be photos of us together next time!

  1. Die Kinder fehlen Gerda doch immer noch, mir auch.
Hoffentlich können die beiden prächtigen Bärchen bald wieder zusammensein!

Dankeschön und liebe Grüße von Brigitte.

  2. Thank you very much dear Mervi and Arkadij.
Best wishes to Kai, Gerda, Shauna and Nordi.

  3. Liebe Mervi,

  4. Dear Mervi and Arkadi
The photos of Gerda and Kai are stunning.
I am sure that all the snow suits them very
The separation from cubs is never easy, but at
least Gerda has friendly keepers to cheer her up. Kai must be looking forward to being with her.

  5. Dear Mervi!
That is the way of things. What a pity that Gerda’s time with her kids is already over. The two cubs certainly had a happy childhood.
I suspect the separation of Gerda and her cubs is much sadder for the visitors and fans of the polar bears, and of course for the polar bear children, than it is for Gerda, who is looking forward to her honeymoon with Kai.
I hope that Shauna and Nordi do not suffer too much from the separation from their mother and that the best possible new home will be found for them.

  6. What an extremely touching image it is when GERDA hugs the balls instead of her kids!
Her ‘facial expressions’ are such I would like to hug and kiss HER right away . . .

KAI is a breathtakingly kind of a male polar bear and despite of his remarkable dimension,
he looks extremely kind and one would also like to hug (ha-ha-ha, how?) and kiss him.

It would be fantastic the two of you were back ‘asap’! 🙂 See Ya!

The charmes of these two extraordenary polar bears are supported through the magnificant photographs of
Arkadi Laptenko and even stressed/underlined by Mervi’s entertaining pic-titles, by HER story so to say.

    Thank you very much!

Not to forget: Despite of my enthusiasm towards the adults, I didn’t and I won’t forget the growing kids, SHAUNA and NORDI. My my fingers are all kept crossed for a good future and a happy life for the both
and for all the four – plus for their surroundings (landscape, food, toys, language, keepers, visitors, photographers, story-tellers etc. etc.)

  8. Wann see GERDA with her cub of the year 2014?
Here we got – Thanks to LINKs with photos LUDMILA published in ‘Die Knuipe’ on 12.05.2014 (!)
    Unfortunately the Link for one of the lovely pics given by her in that time doesn’t function anymore;
therefore; I had to make a ‘collage’:

    So lovely! – Enjoy!
