The baby bear in Orsa is now two months old

Ewa’s and Wilbär’s baby is now two months old and both the mother and the cubbie are doing fine. The cub has gained lots of weight and it’s getting stronger all the time. Even it’s movements are getting more stable, Pernilla Thalin (the director of the park) says.

The baby has grown a lot since he/she was born and it now has a warm white fur. It has even started crawling in the den. It’s amazing to see how quickly a polar bear baby gains weight – thanks to the mother’s fat milk.

For the time being we have lots of snow here in Orsa so it will probably last until March (at least) until Ewa allows her baby to come out of their den. The snowbanks would make it difficult for a tiny baby to move around, Pernilla says. But, of course, it’s up to mama Ewa to decide when the time is right!

The 27th of February is the International Polar Bear Day and we will celebrate that day in the park but even in the social media channels by live broadcast with our polar bears.

The birth of Ewa’s and Wilbär’s baby has made this dull corona time much brighter! I’m really looking forward to the day Ewa decides to present her baby to the visitors! Of course, I’m hoping I can see the cubbie even ‘live’ later in the Spring!

It will be wonderful for the baby to experience the snowy enclosure when the time is right. While I’m waiting I want to show you a couple of photos of Ewa and Wilbär enjoying the Winter Wonderland. The pics were taken by Anders Björklund a few years ago.

The baby bear will have bundles of fun in the snow – just like it’s mama and papa in these photos! 🙂

During the Winter there’s always enough snow to dig snow grottos!

  1. Dear Mervi
This is such needed news. Ewa looks a proud young Polar Mum.
At least in Orsa there is plenty of fresh air to blow the virus away. Also, Ewa can be sure of peace and quiet in her den.
Wilbaer will also be able to stay.

  2. Dear Mervi!
How nice that Ewa’s baby continues to do well and everything seems to be fine! The little one looks proper and already has a strong voice.
I hope it stays that way!
    My fingers remain crossed.
I hope that you and Vesa will have the opportunity to visit Ewa’s and Wilbär’s offspring perhaps later this year.

    All the best, take care!
    Hugs
    Anke

  3. These are very entertaining pics of EWA and WILBÄR!

Mother and child look absolutely relaxed and beautiful in that warm light!
It seems that baby has got a quite soft ‘voice’ 🙂

Thanks half to the “Orsa Predator Center” and half to you, dear Mervi,
as you had to do the editor-in-chief-efforts and even produced half of the text.

  4. I am happy about the good news from Orsa Park!!
