26.3.2021 – Photos by Ursus Maritimus Polarbearologist

We’ve been able to follow the polar bear couple Gerda and Kai in the Novosibirsk Zoo in this magazine. Now I have the great pleasure to present their daughter Shilka and their adorable granddaughter Hochan!

The baby bear Hochan was born on the 25th of November 2020 in the Tennoji Zoo. The father is Gogo who was born in December 2013 in the Perm Zoo in Russia. Mama Shilka was born in November 2013 in Novosibirsk.

Gogo moved to the Yokohama Zoo on the 9th of March.

Ursus Maritimus visited Gerda and Shilka in September 2014. Let me show you some photos from her visit.

Tender moments between a mother and her daughter.

Now this cute baby is a mother herself!

Shilka and Hochan

The name of the cub is “Ho (-chan)”. “Chan” is a suffix in Japanese language to add cuteness or familiarity to the name.

The 23rd of March was the Big Day when Shilka and Hochan had their first public appearance.

Good to see you, Shilka and Hochan!

A milk break is needed to get more energy!

Of course, the little polar bear girl was curiously following her mama and exploring the enclosure.

…. but sometimes a baby bear gets tired.

Sleeping with mama makes Hochan feel safe and secure.

One can’t but love this cutie! Enjoy and fall in love!

Bye bye! Hopefully we’ll be back soon.

  1. Dear Mervi and Ursus Maritimus
The Shilka reports in Facebook are wonderful glimpses of the Polar Bears in Japan. Japan has more Polar Bears in Zoos than other countries. Little Ho is so pretty in the straw with mother.
I hope we will see more of Shilka and Hochan.

  2. Dear Mervi!
It is wonderful to know that Schilka is a mother now. Hochan is cute as all polar bear kids.

  3. Dear Ursus Maritimus!

Thank you so much for your generousity with the photos! The readers of this magazine have been able to follow the life of the polar bears in Novosibirsk and now they can even enjoy pics of Gerda’s and Kai’s daughter and granddaughter. I’m sure they are all delighted to meet Shilka and her sweet baby girl Hochan.

The babies grow so fast! Shilka was such a cute cubbie and now she has her own adorable ice princess!

I love each and every photo!

    Hugs from Mervi

  4. Liebe Mervi,
süß die kleine Hochan, wie alle Bärenbabys!
Danke für die schönen Bilder aus Japan.
    Liebe Grüße Moni K

  5. Liebe Mervi,

  8. Dear Mervi

It’s always great to see pictures from far away!!!
Shilka has offspring Hochhan are adorable.
Thank you very much for this well-travelled report.

  9. Dear Mervi and Ursus Maritimus !
Most of the time, we feel uneasy when little bears have grown into cubs that have to be separated from their mothers and have to move to another zoo. We have grown fond of them in such a short time and of course we wish them a happy future and a long life in a good zoo!
Sometimes we never hear from them again and lose sight of them.

So it’s all the nicer to receive good news from Gerda and Kai’s daughter Shilka after years, that she is doing well and now has a sugar-sweet little daughter of her own.
Thank you for the cute pictures and happy information.

I feel sorry for the little bear’s handsome father Gogo, who reminds me of Knut in the photo. He, like many others, seems to be a travelling bear.

  10. It’s wonderful that Shilka has her own baby now. Little Hochan is adorable. With silly Gogo for a father, she will probably be a fun loving bear too.

I wish I could travel now. I would love to go see the two cubs in Japan.

  11. Thank you very much dear Mervi and Ursus Maritimus.
Best wishes to Shilka and Hochan.
