We are extremely sorry to tell that we have lost Nord, the 16 year old polar bear male. Nord arrived to Ranua last february. Nord became very ill and did not respond to treatment. Nord was euthanised to stop his suffering. Nord will be greatly missed by the entire staff at Ranua Wildlife Park.

Venus is a widow again

Nord was born November 13, 2005 in Moscow, to Simona and Vrangel. He was the father of son Nissan, born in 2013 in Izhevsk Russia and now in France: twin sons Beely and Sery, born in Izhevsk and now in Belgium; and four daughters with similar names born in Danish zoos, Imaq born in 2018 in Copenhagen, twins Inuq and Imaq born in 2019 in Aalborg, and Inuviq born in 2019 in Copenhagen.

  1. Dear Mervi and Molly
I was fortunate to meet Nord up close in Aalborg
in June and August 2019. You can see my reports in
The big males seem much more fragile than the females.
I am sure Ranua will have done what they could for him.

  2. Dear Mervi and Molly!
What a tragedy! I feel very sorry about this loss.
Nord was such a handsome and impressive male and we all wished him a good time in Ranua wih Venus. Apart from that, he was in his prime.
My heartfelt sympathies goes to all those who loved him and did everything they could to help him.
    What a pity!

  6. Liebe Mervi,

    RIP dear Nord!
