After being selected as sole operator to service historic York, TIER welcomes all residents to try its service and gives some guidance where to find and park the e-scooters. We are TIER. You may have seen some of our e-scooters popping up around the City and we wanted to create a space where residents can get the latest updates on our service.

This blog will be updated at regular intervals with fun and informative content so you can keep up to speed with e-scooters in York. First things first, we want to share our current operational zone, where you can pick up a scooter and where you can (and can’t) ride! Before we get stuck in, if you have a smartphone, remember to check the Map in our app.

This is the easiest way to understand how our e-scooters are integrated into York. Parking You must start and end your ride from one of our parking locations. It is not possible to end your ride outside of these zones. It helps reduce street clutter and keeps the City tidy.

Where to park tier scooters?

TIER in Essex Download the TIER App to find where the nearest TIER e-scooter can be found. Step on, push off, press the throttle and go. Make sure you place both feet on the board. Pull firmly on the brake lever on the handlebars. You can ride a TIER e-scooter along cycle paths, in parks and in most places in your local town or city. However, there are some roads and areas where it’s forbidden to ride to ensure safety for all road users, including pedestrians. If unsure, check your app for guidance or see the maps below. No Riding Zones To ensure the safety of all road users, there are some areas where you are not allowed to ride (shown in red).
We call these no-go zones.
You are not permitted to ride or park a TIER e-scooter in these zones.

Out of Bound Zones Please note scooters are not to be taken home but left in the riding zone area once you have completed your ride. Electric scooter storage isn’t just a matter of convenience; getting it right is essential if you want to ensure that your e-scooter lasts as long as it should and performs to the best of its ability.

Poor storage could seriously affect its performance and could drain the battery life. The good news is that storage for an electric scooter is relatively easy once you know the dos and don’ts. Here’s a quick run-through of the best types of storage for electric scooters to keep everything ticking over nicely.

How Do You Store an Electric Scooter? Before you store your electric scooter, you first need to make sure that it’s clean, dry, and free of dirt. If you don’t give your e-scooter a quick clean before putting it into storage, you could end up with damage to the frame or battery.

If you are going to be putting your electric scooter into storage for a while, such as over the winter, it’s especially important to make sure it is clean, but you should plan on carrying out a few before you use it again. When storing your scooter, one of the most important elements is the temperature.

Just like Goldilocks, electric scooters don’t like it too cold or too warm. Storage with a temperature in the range of 15 – 25 °C is ideal for storing electric scooter. If you are storing your electric scooter for some time, the battery will gradually run down and discharge.

It’s important to keep it charged to protect its lifespan; if you allow the battery to go completely flat, it may become damaged.
Conversely, your battery should not be stored while at 100% charge.
Ideally, your battery should be kept charged 30-50% and given a top-up regularly.
Aside from being the right temperature, the storage area for your scooter should also be clean, dry, and free of anything flammable.

You may find it useful to protect your scooter with a bag or cover while it’s in storage. Can Electric Scooters Be Stored Outside? The temperature of your electric scooter storage really is key, so you should only store your scooter in outbuildings if you can protect it from either extreme heat or extreme cold.

A heated garage may be suitable, but you would need to be certain that the temperature won’t drop below 15 °C.
An electric scooter which is exposed to the cold will not perform as well due to battery damage.
If you don’t have room inside for your whole scooter, one option is to remove the battery and keep this inside while storing the rest of the scooter outside.

While you will still need to keep the frame clean and dry, the temperature will be less critical if you stash the battery inside your home.

Can an Electric Scooter Be Stored in the Garden? As we’ve already mentioned above, issues with the temperature may prevent you from storing your electric scooter outside.However, aside from the battery, there may be other issues.

Electric scooters are extremely valuable and may be targeted by thieves. If you plan on keeping your e-scooter in the garden, it should be secured, so it can’t easily be stolen. Debris and dirt which accumulates on your e-scooter can cause corrosion and damage to the parts when you’re not using it.

This will be particularly the case outside, when it will be exposed to more potential dirt and pollutants. If you’ve removed your battery to take it inside, don’t neglect the frame. Your scooter should be properly protected from the elements so that you don’t need to unnecessarily replace corroded or damaged parts.

Take Care of Your Scooter for Long-Term Use Don’t risk damaging your electric scooter with poor storage, especially during the colder weather. If space is an issue, there are many which make it more convenient to keep your scooter indoors all year round.

How do you end a ride on a tier scooter?

When you’re finished – To end your trip, park the scooter in a designated area (look out for signs in your local area, or check the app) and tap the ‘End rental’ button. Be sure to tap it right away, as your trip is charged by the minute. Be a kind human being and NEVER block sidewalks, bike lanes or driveways.

With a number of proven, credible manufacturers in the market, the firm chooses to buy in the machines with a number of customisations to its own requirements.

Tier believes doing that allows it to focus its efforts on where it feels it can make a difference, such as customer service, its app and operations. Currently, the fifth-generation Tier machine you’ll find on the streets of the UK is an Okai-produced model, but the new Tier 6 is produced by Segway (yes, the firm best known for those wobbly two-wheelers is now one of the world’s leading e-scooter makers).

Why the switch from Okai to Segway? Tier certainly isn’t abandoning Okai e-scooters: it will likely be using its fifth-generation machines in certain markets worldwide for years to come. But one of the key reasons for switching to Segway is about making its logistics easier: Tier also uses Segway e-bikes. Tier has yet to finalise a timeline for when the Tier 6 e-scooter or the A300 e-bike might arrive in the UK – but when that happens the current Okai e-scooters will be serviced, spruced up and redistributed to a different market. The aim is that Tier will eventually have Segway and Okai markets.

But riders won’t really notice such streamlining efforts: if you’re a regular shared e-scooter user you’re probably more concerned with what the Tier 6 is like to ride.
And on that count, the C1 features some notable updates.
Does it offer any more power? Absolutely not: the Department for Transport rules on rental e-scooters are very tight, so the Tier 6 has the same 350W maximum output as its predecessor.

The top speed is also limited depending on local rules, so in the that would mean an absolute maximum of 15.5mph but less in some markets. Transport for London, for example, limits rental scooter to 12.5mph. Perhaps the most easily notable upgrader to the Tier 6 are slightly larger wheels, designed to offer greater stability over rough surfaces and bumps. The base of the machine is also wider, lowering the centre of gravity, while Tier has reworked the hydraulic suspension to offer further improvements over uneven surfaces. What other changes are there? The other difference riders will notice are the key controls and the user interface. There’s now a display screen that gives ‘visual feedback’ to users, including information about restrictions to the operating area and so on. It’s not a full digital display, but it’s not meant to be: Tier didn’t want riders to be distracted looking down for too much information, so instead it uses bright visuals to quickly alert riders. We were unable to test the system fully, but it was easy to see and intuitive. There’s also a new toggle control for the indicator, which replaces the two buttons featured on the pervious machine. That might sound an incredible minor change, but it is far more intuitive to use, both in terms of easily selecting which indicator you want to activate, and in making it easy to turn them off. There’s also a new bag hook, which is a minor addition but will make it easier to take an e-scooter back from the shops if you’ve popped out for supplies. The other notable change is that all the key touchpoints – the throttle, indicators, kick stand and so on – are all finished in bright orange, making them really easy to spot on the green Tier machines. Where can I buy, sorry, rent one? You can’t in the UK just yet. But should you find yourself in a city in Austria, Germany, Hungary or Sweden with the Tier 6 currently in operation we’d certainly recommend an outing. As noted, we’re waiting to hear exactly when Tier might roll out the new machine here, and in which cities. Let’s be honest: if you’re going to rent an e-scooter, you’ll like take whichever machine you can find nearby. But from our brief outing, the Tier 6 will be a welcome upgrade when it arrives here. While it doesn’t reinvent the e-scooter, it feels more stable and confidence-inspiring to ride, and is also easier and more intuitive to use.

Can I park lime scooter anywhere?

Different things may happen depending on what market you’re in and how the area is designated. Lime has different designations for areas outside of the service area. You can see what type of zone it is by tapping on it in your Lime app: No parking – you can end a ride there, but you may get fined by Lime if you do.

Can I leave my scooter on?

If you are using your mobility scooter at least 3 times a week it is ok to leave it on constantly. If you are only using it once a week or less then you need to unplug the charger once it is fully charged. If it is not being used for an extended period, charge the batteries up at least once a month. Always charge your batteries in accordance with the manufactures recommendations.

Can I ride my mobility scooter in the rain? No. Mobility scooters are ‘splashproof’ not ‘waterproof’. What this means is if you get caught in a light shower of rain and cannot find shelter it is ok to keep riding. If it is a downpour try to get out of the rain as soon as possible.

Your mobility scooter has electronics on it and if they get wet it could be an expensive repair. Do I need a license to ride my mobility scooter? No. Does my mobility scooter need a warrant of fitness and/or registration? No. Is there laws regarding the use of a mobility scooter? Yes. Should I insure my mobility scooter? Yes. Most insurance companies will add your mobility scooter to your current home contents cover. Make sure you value it as replacement, not what you paid for it and that it is covered for accidental damage whilst you are out and about riding it as well.

How do I clean my mobility scooter? Use a warm, damp non abrasive cloth and some mild detergent and wipe the mobility scooter down.
Never use harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive cloths or wash the scooter with a hose.
What is the weight capacity of my mobility scooter? All mobility scooters have a maximum weight carrying capacity or weight limit.

This can range from 70kg up to 250kg depending on the size and type of mobility scooter. Always allow for ‘luggage weight’ (shopping) and weight fluctuations. Never exceed your mobility scooters manufactures weight limit recommendations. Does my mobility scooter need any ongoing servicing? Whilst it is not essential to have a regular service & safety inspection it is recommended for your safety and peace of mind.

Regular servicing should increase your mobility scooters life and save on costly repairs that may have been prevented.
Am I allowed to carry passangers on my mobility scooter? No.
Unless you have a factory double seat fitted it is not safe to carry passengers.
Can I ride my mobility scooter after having a few drinks at my local? No.

You can be charged with using a mobility scooter whilst under the influence of alcohol (or drugs) and the mobility scooter may be confiscated. What do I do if I have an accident on my mobility scooter? If you have had an accident and injured somebody or damaged property you must report it to the Police wthin 48 hours.

Failure to do this may result in fines.
It is also recommended to get a mobility scooter technician to inspect your mobility scooter for any damage that could make your mobility scooter dangerous to ride.
I have a steep driveway, can I ride my mobility scooter up and down it? Most mobility scooters have a recommended maximum safe gradient angle of 12 º,

If you are unsure ask your local mobility scooter shop to come and advise you. How long do batteries last? Typically three to five years but depends entirely on how they are used. Batteries only accept so many discharge/recgarge cycles before they wear out and this can be greatly decreased if they are left flat or not charged correctly.

Always charge your batteries in accordance with the manufactures recommendations.
Do the tyres on my mobility scooter require air like a car? Yes.
Most mobility scooter are pnuematic (air filled).
If you ride over a piece of glass or other sharp object you may get a puncture.
What pressure should I put into my mobility scooters tyres? On the side of the tyres there is a maximum pressure reading however around 30psi seems to suit most mobility scooters.

How far can I ride my mobility scooter before the batteries go flat? This will depend on the size and age of the batteries you have in your mobility scooter. They could go anywhere between 10km and 70km. What do I do if my mobility scooter breaks down or gets a puncture during my ride as I can’t walk far? It would be advisable to purchase an AA roadside assistance membership where if your mobility scooter does break down or get a puncture the AA will get you and your mobility scooter home.

They do not repair the mobility scooter but do get you home.
Is there an age limit to riding a mobility scooter? No.
So long as you are able to safely ride and control the mobility scooter there is no age limit young or old.
My friends tell me I’m not safe when riding my mobility scooter anymore.
I feel fine, what should I do? Contact your local mobility scooter retailer, Age Concern or Occupational Therapist and ask them for an assessment on your riding skills.

It may be that you just need some more training. Am I allowed to ride my mobility scooter on the road? No. You are classed as a pedestrian and must use a footpath if one is available and useable. If there is no footpath or it is unusable then you can use the extreme left hand side of the road.

Am I allowed to ride my mobility scooter into my favoirite shops as I cannot walk far? Yes.
Providing there is enough room to safely operate the mobility scooter inside the shop.
Who gives way – mobility scooter riders or pedestrians? You both give way to each other as you both have a right to the footpath.

As an important rule of thumb with all e-scooters or e-bikes, you should never leave them unattended whilst on charge.

Can I leave my scooter on charge overnight?

You should also allow your mobility scooter battery to charge overnight so that it’s ready for you in the morning. Simply put – a fully-charged battery is a healthy battery.

Is it OK to leave electric scooter in cold?

Batteries store and produce energy through chemical processes that require optimal temperatures.

The cold winter affects the battery’s capacity to store and release energy by slowing down the chemical processes. Increased exposure to cold weather may ultimately degrade the battery to the point where it can charge, hold a charge, or distribute any power.

We recommend choosing a scooter that has a battery level suitable for the type of journey you’re trying to make. Once on your ride we will notify you if your battery goes down to 10%.

We’ll show you how far that will take you, so you can park or switch to another scooter.
In the event that your e-scooter runs out of battery while riding, you can: Try to continue to push and ride the e-scooter manually.
If you are unable to ride the e-scooter, find the nearest Beryl Bay and lock the e-scooter to end your ride.

In the case that you’re very far from a Beryl Bay and feel unable to reach a bay, please end your journey by locking the scooter in a considerate location. You will be charged any out of bay or out of zone fees based on that location. Please note: as stated in our Terms of Service which you agree to before hiring a Beryl e-Scooter, it is your responsibility to ensure the battery level on the bike is sufficient to cover the trip you intend to take.

Do electric scooters overheat?

The motor is overheating – If you notice that your e-scooter’s motor is heating up too quickly, or overheating, the first thing you want to do is turn off the scooter and let it cool down before doing anything else. Overheating can damage both your battery and your motor.

It’ can be caused by riding when the temperature outside is extremely hot or if the scooter is overloaded and drawing too much power.
Once the motor has cooled down, check for any damaged fuses or wiring problems, or get in touch with a specialist for support.
A fault in the scooter’s electrical system could result in the motor running too hot.

While it may still work, you could be doing irreversible damage to your scooter, so it’s best to avoid riding it until you can get it to a technician for repair.

Is 25 km h fast for an electric scooter?

Do you have a need for speed? If so, an electric scooter may be the ideal micromobility vehicle for you. Unlike bicycles and skateboards, electric scooters have a powerful motor that can propel you forward fast. In turn, you won’t need to exert yourself to enjoy their high speeds.

What happens if you leave Lime scooters anywhere?

The app may not permit you to end your ride if the vehicle(s) are in a prohibited area. You may incur fines if you or your guests abandon your vehicle(s) in these areas. For your safety and the safety of others, please make sure you park in designated parking spots out of the way of pedestrians and other vehicles.

Can I leave Lime bike anywhere?

Park the scooter in a designated parking spot. In select cities, parking pins in the app will guide you to these spots. Tap Lock on the app and follow the instructions. For vehicles with helmets, ensure that you lock the helmet to the scooter securely.

Can two people ride a Lime scooter?

For a couple tips about sizing your complete scooter read the guides below for Bars and Decks Scooter Bars One of the biggest factors of how a Scooter will feel is the height and width of the bars.

How do you decide which size you need? What difference does it make? Height : As a general rule of thumb scooter bars should sit around hip to waist height when standing on the deck. This is a great balance of comfort and performance. If bars are too far above the waist then the rider will have more difficulty in controlling the scooter and risk hitting their face on the cross bar.

If the bars are too low then it could be uncomfortable to ride. The range is all up to personal preference of riding style. Those who like to do a lot of whips and park tricks tend to prefer lower heights. While in contrast the more street style riders prefer higher bars for comfort. Width : Riders have different preferences when choosing a width.

A good hint is to choose a bar with the same width as your shoulders. Common range of 18″-22″ If you`re mostly into technical tricks like barspins, choose a narrow bar. And if you`re more a big air and no hands tricks rider, then choose a wider bar. (Remember you can always choose a wide bar and cut it to your preference! ) Scooter Deck The other main factor in sizing a scooter is the deck size.

The size will determine a lot of things for riding. The bigger the deck the more comfortable it will be for larger riders. The smaller the deck, the easier tricks will be and overall the scooter will be lighter. Length : Determined by measuring end to end of the flat section of the deck. Anything past the blunt plate is not included.

Most complete scooters will range from 19″-22″ in length. While aftermarket decks range from 19.5″-23.5″. Width : Complete scooters will come with deck widths ranging from 4″-5″. Aftermarket decks range from 4.5″-6″. Choosing your size : When just starting out you’ll want to base your deck size off your height.

If you’re below 5′ your going to want to be in the smaller range of 4″-4.5″ wide and 19″-20″ long.
If your 5′-6′ tall we recommend 4.5″-5″ wide and 20″-22″ long.
If you’re over 6′ your going to want to the biggest available 4.75″-6″ wide and 21.5″-23.5″ long.
Of course keep in mind smaller decks will be easier for tricks while larger decks will be more comfortable.

Scooter Wheels The more basic scooters come with 100mm or 110mm wheels but you can get wheels up to 125mm in diameter. If you are just starting out wheel size won’t be a huge factor for your first scooter. Just make sure to get metal core wheels. If you are looking to upgrade your wheels then compatibility will be an issue.
