Can I run a website on AWS free tier?

Q: What is a static website? A static website is delivered to the user exactly as stored, in contrast to dynamic web pages which are generated by a web application. Static websites are best for sites with few authors and relatively infrequent content changes.

Common use cases for static websites are personal and simple marketing websites. Static websites simply deliver the HTML, JavaScript, images, video and other files as stored to your website visitors, and contain no application code. Q: How are static websites different from dynamic websites? Dynamic websites are distinguished by their use of web applications to generate the individual web pages on the site.

There are two main types of dynamic websites: those built on Content Management Software (CMS) and those that are built from scratch. CMS-based websites rely on software such as WordPress, Joomla and Drupal to provide website editors with features to make it easy to build and update a website.

Dynamic websites built from the ground up deliver significantly more interactivity (e.g. book a flight, watch a streaming movie) and rely on application logic, such as PHP or Ruby scripts on a server to render a webpage. Q: What is web site hosting? The infrastructure environment used to enable end users to request, receive, and interact with your website is commonly referred to as “hosting.” With AWS, you build and maintain your own hosting environment.

Other options include managed hosting and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). With managed hosting, a business will create and maintain the hosting environment for your site. If you’re interested in managed hosting, check out Acquia or our other certified partners,

  • SaaS options bundle software (typically for creating and maintaining your site) with the infrastructure that is required to host your website.
  • Q: Why should I use a static website hosting environment? Static website hosting is the lowest cost and lowest maintenance option (for example, there are no servers to maintain) and it provides high levels of reliability and scale.

If your content website has numerous authors and changes frequently, you’ll likely want to use a CMS-based website. Q: How much will it cost to host my website? The total cost of hosting your personal website on AWS will vary depending on your usage. Typically, it will cost $1-3/month if you are outside the AWS Free Tier limits.

If you are eligible for AWS Free Tier and within the limits, hosting your personal website will cost around $0.50/month. To see a breakdown of the services used and their associated costs, see Services Used and Costs, Q: How long will it take to deploy my website? If you already have your site, or you just want to use a basic HTML page, it will take about 30 minute to follow and complete our implementation guide.

Start the guide now. Q: How much effort will it take to maintain my website on AWS? Static websites don’t require you to maintain servers, and no ongoing maintance is required for the three services you’ll use to host your website: Amazon S3, Amazon Route 53, and Amazon CloudFront.

  1. The time you spend editing and deploying new content will depend on how frequently you change your website.
  2. Q: I don’t have a website, how should I build it? Most individuals use text editors or website design software (e.g.
  3. Dreamweaver) to build their websites.
  4. If you don’t have the skills or you’d rather not develop the site, you can hire an agency to build your site.

Q: Can I customize my website once it is hosted on AWS? Yes. Once you website is up and running, there are multiple ways you can add additional AWS services and functionality to your site. For example, you can add search functionality to your website using Amazon CloudSearch.

Can I deploy an app on AWS for free *?

Let others have access to your data app in no time – Photo by Austin Distel on Unsplash In an earlier post, we created a data app with Python and Streamlit. It only worked in the local machine so other people could not use it. In this post, we will run our data app on an AWS EC2 instance so that other people can have access to it.

We just need to create a free tier account on AWS. It is very simple to create and we won’t be charged a dime if we stay within the limits of the free tier. The scope of the free tier is more than enough for learning purposes. If you already have an AWS account or just created a free tier one, we are ready to start.

The outline of the post:

Creating an EC2 instanceConnecting to the EC2 instance (Linux, Mac, and Windows)Running the app on the EC2 instance

We need to open up the EC2 dashboard on AWS management console. (image by author) On the EC2 dashboard, scroll down a little and click on Launch Instance. (image by author) We first need to choose an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) which provides the information required to launch an instance. AMI contains the software configuration (i.e. operating system) and some pre-installed software packages. There are many options for AMI. We will select the first one which is Amazon Linux 2. (image by author) You can select a different one but make sure it is free tier eligible. The next step is to select the instance type. There is one that is eligible for free tier. (image by author) The next step is configuring the instance details but we can leave it with the default option. We can also skip the next two items which are “add storage” and “add tags”. The default storage option is enough. The next step is configuring the security group. (image by author) We will then review and launch. The final step is creating a key pair. Make sure you create a key pair and download it. We will need it to connect to the instance. (image by author) After downloading the key pair (.pem file), we can launch the instance. The instance will be ready in a few minutes and we can view it on the EC2 dashboard. I’m currently using a windows computer so I will show you how to connect to the instance from a windows machine. (image by author) Let’s go back to our windows machine case. We will use PuTTY which is a free SSH client for windows. You can download it from putty.org, The first step is to create a ppk file using the key pair (pem file) we downloaded when launching the instance. From the menu under PuTTY, open up PuTTYGen. Click on “Load” and then select the pem file. (image by author) Then click on “Save private key” to save the generated ppk file. (image by author) We now have the ppk file we need. For the next step, we will open up “PuTTY” from the menu under PuTTY. On EC2 dashboard, click on the instance ID to view the instance details. Copy the IP address of the EC2 instance (IPv4 Public IP). (image by author) Then paste it in the Host Name box after typing “ec2-user@” as below: (image by author) Then select Connection -> SSH -> Auth -> Browse and upload the ppk file. (image by author) Do not click on “Open” yet. The next step is to give your session a name. Click on “Session” and type the name in the “Saved Sessions” box and save it. (image by author) Now we can click on “Open” to connect to the instance. (image by author) We are now connected to our instance. Putty will open up a terminal as below: (image by author) We are ready to upload the source code and dependencies on the instance. This EC2 instance has Python 2.7 pre-installed but we need Python 3.6 or a later version for Streamlit. The following command will install Python 3. sudo yum install python3 We will clone the source code from a Github repository so we will install git. (image by author) Then paste it in the terminal after “git clone”: git clone https://github.com/SonerYldrm/stock-prices-app.git Enter the repository: cd stock-prices-app The next step is to install the dependencies: sudo python3 -m pip install streamlit sudo python3 -m pip install pandas sudo python3 -m pip install pandas-datareader Since this is a simple app, we do not have many dependencies. (image by author) Congragulations! Our stock price data app is running on an EC2 instance and can be accessed from any where through a web browser. Enter the external URL in your web browser and you will see the app is running. Here is a short screen recording of the app saved in a web browser. (image by author) Note : You may see a warning about the data source when you first open the app. Just ignore it and enter a stock name. App will run smoothly. I may now have the instance running when you read this post. However, you can easily create your own using the source code in this repository,

Stock price data app is a simple one. It just downloads stock prices based on user inputs and displays them. However, the process for creating more advanced and complex apps is the same. I believe this simple app and quick deployment will help you in creating data science or machine learning products. Once you are comfortable with the basics, you can steadily increase the complexity.

It is worth noting that this is not a production-ready deployment. Proper security with HTTPS and a certificate are very important for real products. The amount of expected traffic should also be considered. Finally, you may want to obtain a host name. Thank you for reading.
