When I started to think what I would write in this article I bought some croissants and made a cup of cappuccino to give me energy. Of course, I couldn’t help the tears running down my cheeks thinking back to the 19th of March last year. Suddenly I felt a tap on my shoulder and a the most beautiful fluffy angel appeared….

Unsere lieben Freunde, Elisabeth&Marc haben am Wochenende Flocke und Rasputin in Antibes besucht.
Als wir am Freitag in Antibes ankamen, schwamm Rasputin im zweiten Gehege. Er hat viel von seinem Fell verloren, aber das wird wieder nachwachsen.
Last weekend our dear friends Elisabeth&Marc from Straßbourg visited Flocke and Rasputin in Antibes. Upon our arrival on Friday, Rasputin was swimming in the second enclosure.

Saturday morning (25.2) I woke up to 15 cm of snow but that didn’t stop me from joining my friend and his family on a visit to the cubbie in Toronto. It was -9C and very windy so we didn’t think the kids would last too long outdoors.

I decided to take a detour on my drive home from Manitoulin Island on Tuesday and drop in to the Toronto Zoo for a quick visit to the polar bear cub. Purchasing a member’s pass was the first order of business. Then it was straight to the Tundra Trek. It was the perfect time to visit because the weather was snowy and it was mid-day so the crowds were small.

Wilbär is enjoying the snow and the ice whole heartedly! Since he’s a polar bear even the coldest days doesn’t prevent him from playing in the white stuff. However, life is not only playing. Wilbär is training hard for Vasaloppet – the marathon skiing competition that takes place every year in Dalarna.

Even polar bears need vacation so we decided to visit the Snow Castle in Kemi – it’s a town in northern Finland only 20 kilometers from Mervi’s hometown. The castle is build of snow and ice every Winter. It’s a hotel where you can book a room if you want to spend a ‘cool’ night. There’s also a restaurant and even a chapel!

Now that the Siberian cold had reached almost the whole Europe it’s inevitable that my thoughts go to our polar bear friends – especially to a certain magic bear that no longer is physically with us. However, we all have so many wonderful memories of him that we still can feel his presence very stongly.

Nicht das es so viel andere Hohepunkte gibt mit der Mangel an Beschäftigung für Eisbärinnen im Zoo Berlin …
